‘Perfect Fit’: Industrial Strategies, Textual Negotiations and Celebrity Culture in Fashion Television Helen Warner Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film and Television Studies Submitted July 2010 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. Helen Warner P a g e | 2 ABSTRACT According to the head of the American Costume Designers‟ Guild, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, fashion is emphatically „not costume‟. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

These articles represent two of the earliest works describing the racial apartheid experienced by Chicanas/os in Texas written from a Chicano perspective. Rechy then exposed another taboo, the homosexual underground of the pre-Stonewall Rebellion (1969) era, when one’s presence in a gay bar elicited harsh retribution from the state—from sex-offender status registration to involuntary electroshock therapy. Rechy’s debut novel, City of Night (1963), is a semi-autobiographical tale of a nameless protagonist navigating urban America as a hustler defying a society that criminalized queer ii bodies, desires, and lives.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. Channel-Surfing for the Non-Binary Abstract Overview: The power of the media is remarkable. What we see on TV has the potential to shape our future and how we perceive others, as well as ourselves. Whether we are conscious of this phenomenon or not, we are the very byproducts of what television and other forms of entertainment present to us. With this in mind, we are able to see the flaws that are embedded in our society as a result of the media's influence. Today we see a growing number of children and adults coming out in the world identifying their gender as non-binary. The flaw that comes with this empowering movement is that there is a backlash from the public based on these gender non-conforming individuals. A primary way to improve this dilemma is for the media to incorporate non-binary characters into current television programs.

This thesis presents a case for the collection of publications included in the submission to be viewed as a coherent body of work which makes a contribution to knowledge in the fields of fashion studies and cultural studies, in which the works are situated. The body of work consists of two monographs - Don We Now Our Gay Apparel: Gay Men’s Dress in the Twentieth Century (Berg, 2000), and The Story of Men’s Underwear (Parkstone International Press, 2010) - and two chapters in edited books - ‘Butch Queens in Macho Drag: Gay Men, Dress and Subcultural Identity’ (2008) and ‘Hair and Male (Homo)Sexuality: Up-Top and Down Below’ (2008). Through an examination of the major themes addressed throughout the submitted body of work – sexuality, identity, subcultural formation, men’s dress and masculinities and clothes and the body - this thesis demonstrates that the published work contributes to knowledge through its two major foci.

  • How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists By Dawn Temples In the flashy, fast-paced world of fashion journalism, Betty Suarez struggles to prove that what’s inside a person is just as important as what they wear. As a budding journalist with a dream job, she exemplifies a fish-out-of-water with her braces, glasses and lack of fashion sense. Determined to work her way up at MODE magazine, Suarez tackles any task she’s given, from picking up laundry to single-handedly orchestrating a celebrity-baby cover shoot. Successful women at MODE are cut-throat and demonstrate many masculine characteristics that female journalists have portrayed in both television and movies of the past. Suarez contemplates throughout the show what sacrifices she’s willing to make to become a successful female journalist and eventually reach her goal of starting her own magazine. In the fall of 2006, ABC-TV launched a new television show, Ugly Betty, produced by Salma Hayek. The show, ‘Yo soy Betty, la fea,’1 was already a success as a South American telenovela that was first aired in Colombia, South America in 1999 and began to air in America on the Telemundo network in 2000. The telenovela showed a woman who was intelligent, but not very attractive, who became a secretary at a fashion The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists By Dawn Temples 2 design company named Ecomoda.
