Chapter Six 6 Remembering Exile The ecclesiastical historians of the fifth century complicated the process of remem- bering clerical exile as they attempted to define the nature and purpose of Chris- tian flight in a post-Constantinian context. A fleeing bishop was hard to define, let alone defend. Eusebius of Nicomedia, whom we examined in some depth in the last chapter, must be (re)placed in the city from which he was exiled to condemn his flight and label him a heretic, while Athanasius of Alexandria was transferred to a recognizably orthodox space to confirm and defend his status as an ortho- dox hero. Our last case study turns to yet another man in flight, and one we have encountered before, by way of John Chrysostom. Meletius of Antioch is a par- ticularly difficult figure to define precisely because his status as an exile continues to slip beyond pro- or anti-Nicene categories of orthodoxy. He exists in a liminal space within the ecclesiastical histories of the fifth century. This almost-but-not- quite-orthodox figure therefore demonstrates how exile further destabilizes the orthodox project. In this final chapter, we will explore once again how the discourse of exile was used to remember and shape Nicene orthodoxy. And yet, this final bishop in flight had a conflicted legacy. We will then begin where we left off in the previous chap- ter and, here, examine Theodoret’s reconstruction of the Antiochene landscape. In this examination, however, we will pay attention not to the invading bishop, but to Antioch’s thrice-ousted bishop, Meletius. -

Abstract Watchman Nee (Ni Tuosheng, 1903-1972) is one of the most influential Chinese theologians. His theology formed in the early twentieth century and still attracts Chinese people today. This thesis undertakes an innovative twofold-perspective investigation into Nee’s idea of sanctification. By clarifying Nee’s synthesizing of the Holiness Movement theologies and examining his view of sanctification through the lens of the neo-Confucian idea of moral cultivation, this work argues that the practical pursuit of living in holiness and the synthesis of rational thinking and mystical intuition of Nee’s spirituality both deeply resonated within the Chinese spiritual neo-Confucian mindset. Viewing Nee’s theology as a bridge connecting profound Western theological traditions and potential Chinese cultural elements, this thesis deepens the understanding of Nee’s theology, suggests possible spiritual interactions between Christianity and Chinese culture, and explores the future viability of Charismatic Chinese Christianity in relation to Nee’s vision of Chinese Christianity. -

Marquette University, 2011 This dissertation is a study of the Trinitarian theology of Irenaeus of Lyons. With the exception of two recent studies, Irenaeus’ Trinitarian theology, particularly in its immanent manifestation, has been devalued by scholarship due to his early dates and his stated purpose of avoiding speculative theology. In contrast to this majority opinion, I argue that Irenaeus’ works show a mature understanding of the Trinity, in both its immanent and economic manifestations, which is occasioned by Valentinianism. Moreover, his Trinitarian theology represents a significant advancement upon that of his sources, the so-called apologists, whose understanding of the divine nature converges in many respects with Valentinian theology. I display this advancement by comparing the thought of Irenaeus with that of Justin, Athenagoras, and Theophilus, on Trinitarian themes. Irenaeus develops Trinitarian theology in the following ways. First, he defines God’s nature as spirit, thus maintaining the divine transcendence through God’s higher order of being as opposed to the use of spatial imagery (God is separated/far away from creation). -

Psukhai That Matter: The Psukhē in and Behind Clement of Alexandria’s Paedagogus Abstract This dissertation aims to investigate the ideology and mechanics of the ancient soul’s materiality as witnessed in Clement of Alexandria’s late second- or early third-century work, the Paedagogus. I focus on four ways in which Clement refers to the soul: (1) as an entity in need of punishment and healing, (2) as vulnerable to substances and the activities of the body, (3) as made visible through the body’s appearance, and (4) as an internal moral-core. Through the lens of the Paedagogus, this dissertation introduces recent theoretical work on “materiality” and “the body,” especially as developed in gender studies, into the broad scholarly conversation about the ancient soul. In the process, it shows how Clement uses the interactions between the ancient soul and the ancient body in his attempt to produce and police Christian subjects. -

In the Liber asceticus, Maximus illustrates the Trinity as the beginning, means and end of Christian life, highlighting baptism, the Spirit’s appropriation of Son’s activities to the baptized, how the incarnate Son serves as the example of love and interweaves Trinitarian prayer into the dialogue’s appeal for mercy. -

THB truth in reference to the nature of man is most important, because of its bearing on so many important doctrines. The doctrines of sin,-its nature, its origin, its transmission,-conversion, sanctification, the person of Christ, the atonement, the resnrrection, the future life, and many others, are modified by the doctrine as to the nature of man. Unless the latter is both correctly and clearly stated, not only will erroneous views be held on these other points, but the practical activity of the church may be seriously affected, so close is the connection between truth and life. The earlier Christian fathers, as Irenreus, Justin Martyr, Origen, and others, held a tripartite view as to man's na· ture, as the most natural interpretation of Scripture. But when Apollinaris based a dangerous heresy on this doctrine, and the Latin Church, which became dominant, defiuitely and with authority adopted the doctrine of the bipartite nature of man, the older view was neglected or rejected. In modern times it has been taken up again in a tentative sort of way, or with an attempt to harmonize it 'with the other theory. But I have nowhere seen an altogether sat· isfactory treatment of the subject, and therefore venture to attempt a brief statement of it. My aim is to describe the rules that these thinkers take to order relations implicated in the Christian’s acts of parrhêsia and confessio before other human persons and before the LORD. To this end, I employ methodology derived from ordinary language philosophy (OLP), which understands the meaning of a word to be constituted by its use within the form of life of a particular community. -

ABSTRACT “Made in the Image of God” – How the Tripartite Mind-Body-Spirit Structure of Humankind Mirrors the Trinitarian Structure of God, an Ontological Theory Mia C. Angeliese Director: Jennifer L. Howell, Ph.D. This thesis presents a new ontological theory of imago Dei (the image of God) in humankind. Chapter One analyzes in-depth what it means to be made in the image of God, and what is required of any theory of imago Dei to be regarded as a plausible potential theory of how the image of God is represented in humankind. Chapter Two discusses Trinitarian theology as well as accepted truths of the Trinitarian structure and functioning. Chapter Three presents a new ontological theory of the image of God in humankind. This theory purports that humans have a tripartite (three-part) structure – mind, body, and spirit – that represents a sort of trinity in humankind which mirrors the Trinitarian structure of the Godhead and serves as God’s image in humanity. Chapter Four discusses mind-body-spirit health and wellness and suggests a holistic approach to healthcare that considers the whole of what it means to be human, made in imago Dei.
