Thy Kingdom Come This year we celebrate Pentecost on 9th June, fifty days after the late Easter this year. The altar frontals and celebrants will be resplendent in red and, following the Ascension forty days after the Resurrection, we will sing and hear of the coming of the Holy Spirit. That first occasion was memorably recounted by Luke at the beginning of Acts chapter 2. A large and disparate crowd gathered outside the place where disciples were waiting for the gift promised by the departing Christ. This was a more public, open waiting than that after the crucifixion, and one that attracted a wider, intrigued, or perhaps impartially interested, audience. Perhaps no one anticipated the Holy Spirit coming as a rushing wind, with tongues of flames that, rather than harm, transformed the ability of each they touched to communicate. Effectively translating words and meaning, though many different nationalities and dialects were gathered - a repurposing of the chaos of Babel. This Holy Spirit enhanced understanding was for one purpose – spreading the message of God’s love, hope and salvation far beyond those who had heard it to date. Malcolm Guite’s sonnet encapsulates this beautifully. “...This is the feast of Fire, Air, Water, poured out and breathed and kindled into earth... today the Gospel crosses every border, all tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace. Today the lost are found in his translation...” Jesus teaches that the Holy Spirit comes in peace, as advocate and teacher, not as a threat, although our ‘comfort zone’ may by discomfited by listening to and acting on what we hear. This peace comes from trust, and teaches us life-changing, living love that, at our best, leads us to aspire to and practice Kingdom values every day. An invitation to us all: are you ready to celebrate? The collect for Pentecost sums this up: Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, ignite in us your holy fire; strengthen your children with the gift of faith, revive your Church with the breath of love, and renew the face of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. We’ve had a successful year, with a number of new initiatives, and good (and sometimes record) attendance at Christmas and Easter. Also, the numbers of the Electoral Roll have increased by eight to 39. Schubert Mass The sublime voices of the Blythburgh Singers combined with the string virtuosity of Rebecca Scott Smissen, Jane Slocombe, Liz Skinner and Naomi Payne Cook from Norwich Baroque to present the Mass No 2 in G major by Franz Schubert on 5th May. It’s only the second time (we think) that we’ve had a sung mass by a major composer for a service. It’s bewildering to think that Schubert was only eighteen when he wrote it. More than 100 people attended this rich blend of music, litany and worship. Many thanks to all those involved who made this possible. We’ll try to do something like it again as soon as we can. Service ‘Specials’ On Sunday 16th June we celebrate Trinity Sunday, which is Blythburgh Church’s Patronal Day. This would normally be a lay led service but, on this occasion, it will be a Eucharist, led by Team Rector the Revd Simon Pitcher, at 9.30am. Refresh- ments will be served after the service. At our 9.30amBCP Eucharist service on Sunday 23rd June, we’re delighted that Halcyon Meldrum will tell us about The Loft youth centre in Southwold, a venture which Holy Trinity supports financially. Aldeburgh comes to Blythburgh There are two concerts at Blythburgh church as part of this year’s Aldeburgh Festi- val. The performance by renowned singers Tenebrae on Sunday 9th June at 8pm is sold out, but at the time of writing, tickets were available for a recital on Wednesday 19th June at 8pm by the acclaimed Alisa Weilerstein, who will be playing Bach’s suites for solo cello.
