Happy Birthday.... Thy Kingdom Come This year we celebrate Pentecost on 9th June, fifty days after the late Easter this year. The altar frontals and celebrants will be resplendent in red and, following the Ascension forty days after the Resurrection, we will sing and hear of the coming of the Holy Spirit. That first occasion was memorably recounted by Luke at the beginning of Acts chapter 2. A large and disparate crowd gathered outside the place where disciples were waiting for the gift promised by the departing Christ. This was a more public, open waiting than that after the crucifixion, and one that attracted a wider, intrigued, or perhaps impartially interested, audience. Perhaps no one anticipated the Holy Spirit coming as a rushing wind, with tongues of flames that, rather than harm, transformed the ability of each they touched to communicate. Effectively translating words and meaning, though many different nationalities and dialects were gathered - a repurposing of the chaos of Babel. This Holy Spirit enhanced understanding was for one purpose – spreading the message of God’s love, hope and salvation far beyond those who had heard it to date. Malcolm Guite’s sonnet encapsulates this beautifully. “...This is the feast of Fire, Air, Water, poured out and breathed and kindled into earth... today the Gospel crosses every border, all tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace. Today the lost are found in his translation...” Jesus teaches that the Holy Spirit comes in peace, as advocate and teacher, not as a threat, although our ‘comfort zone’ may by discomfited by listening to and acting on what we hear. This peace comes from trust, and teaches us life-changing, living love that, at our best, leads us to aspire to and practice Kingdom values every day. An invitation to us all: are you ready to celebrate?

The collect for Pentecost sums this up: Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, ignite in us your holy fire; strengthen your children with the gift of faith, revive your Church with the breath of love, and renew the face of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. Revd Judy Miller

6 Parish News Ho l y Tr i n i t y Bl y th b u r g h Ch u r c h La n e , IP19 9PL Nicely poised Holy Trinity held its Annual Parochial Church Meeting on 11th April. We’ve had a successful year, with a number of new initiatives, and good (and sometimes record) attendance at Christmas and Easter. Also, the numbers of the Electoral Roll have increased by eight to 39. Schubert Mass The sublime voices of the Singers combined with the string virtuosity of Rebecca Scott Smissen, Jane Slocombe, Liz Skinner and Naomi Payne Cook from Norwich Baroque to present the Mass No 2 in G major by Franz Schubert on 5th May. It’s only the second time (we think) that we’ve had a sung mass by a major composer for a service. It’s bewildering to think that Schubert was only eighteen when he wrote it. More than 100 people attended this rich blend of music, litany and worship. Many thanks to all those involved who made this possible. We’ll try to do something like it again as soon as we can. Service ‘Specials’ On Sunday 16th June we celebrate Trinity Sunday, which is Blythburgh Church’s Patronal Day. This would normally be a lay led service but, on this occasion, it will be a Eucharist, led by Team Rector the Revd Simon Pitcher, at 9.30am. Refresh- ments will be served after the service. At our 9.30amBCP Eucharist service on Sunday 23rd June, we’re delighted that Halcyon Meldrum will tell us about The Loft youth centre in Southwold, a venture which Holy Trinity supports financially. Aldeburgh comes to Blythburgh There are two concerts at Blythburgh church as part of this year’s Aldeburgh Festi- val. The performance by renowned singers Tenebrae on Sunday 9th June at 8pm is sold out, but at the time of writing, tickets were available for a recital on Wednesday 19th June at 8pm by the acclaimed Alisa Weilerstein, who will be playing Bach’s suites for solo cello. Contact www.snapemaltings.co.uk for details. Coffee Break Join the gathered throng at our monthly Café and Mini-market on Friday 28th June from 10.30am, til noon. Malcolm Doney

Warning – Ornaments and fire! Sunshine glinting off a reflective object in your home can be enough to set your house on fire. So warns various fire services up and down the country. As one expert stresses: “Always keep reflective items such as mirrors, glass and crystal ornaments away from direct sunlight. Many people don’t realise that sunlight can be extremely powerful. If it is then reflected off a mirror, it can produce enough heat to ignite flammable materials.” Recently, a home was gutted when sunlight began shining through a glass ornament on a living room windowsill. Another fire, which engulfed several acres, was started by glass bottles left outside a house. 13 • Books • Brochures Southwold Press Ltd. • Business Cards PRINTERS • Community Newspapers • Compliment Slips We stock a wide range of Card, Paper & Envelopes • Funeral Service Sheets to sell direct to businesses and the general public. • Greeting Cards We also publish two community newspapers The • Headed Stationery Southwold Gazette and The Aldeburgh Gazette. • Ink Pads & Stamps • Invoices OPEN: 9am-1pm • Labels 2pm-5pm Monday - • Menus Friday • Posters & Leaflets • Restaurant Pads UNIT 3A, GLOBAL COURT, REYDON BUSINESS PARK • Spiral Binding Tel: 01502 723361 [email protected] • Wedding Stationery www.southwoldpress.co.uk • & much more ...

Trinity Sunday is celebrated on 16th June this year. It is the Sunday after Pentecost, which is when we think about the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Here are some ways of understanding the Holy Trinity.

A tree has different branches - yet it is still one tree.

Eggs have three different

parts - the shell, the yolk and the white, yet it is still one egg.

In the spring months I enjoyed watching lambs in the fields as I travelled around Suffolk. I love the way they leap playfully around in the grass together. When I was a child I had a poetry book that included the famous poem ‘The Lamb’ by William Blake. Do you know it?

Here it is…

Dost thou know who made thee, Gave thee life, and bid thee feed By the stream and o’er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, John the Baptist referred to Softest clothing, woolly, bright; Jesus as the Lamb of God. 18 Parish News (...continued) St. An d r e w ’s Ch u r ch , Wa l b e r s w i c k Th e St r e e t , IP18 6UZ Easter The Revd Judy Miller had a testing time of it on Easter Day. Having joined thirty others in attending the 7.30am Beach Service at Walberswick (with hot cross buns), she walked up the road to St. Andrew’s to face, for the first time, a properly full church. She celebrated our Festal Eucharist with joy and aplomb. Thank you to Judy, and indeed to all those who dressed the church so beautifully for this special season. Floral Tributes (See photo inside front cover) I have always believed that it is not possible for St. Andrew’s to be decorated more fully than it is at Easter, but our artistic team reached another floral benchmark in the week of 28th April. A period of four days, sadly, saw the funerals of John Capon and Di Kingshott and the Interment of Ashes of Brian & Miriam Dillon. Flowers were everywhere and lasted throughout, but I did notice a missed opportunity to dangle arrangements from the beams. (See photo inside front cover) PCC During Lent, at our APCM, Julia Josephs, while retaining her PCC membership, resigned as its Secretary after some years. A new member was elected to the PCC and to the post of Secretary, Jacki Neeve. Thank you to both of you for your work and your willingness, and thank you to those who continue filling their existing roles All Age Service Jesus’s resurrection and his appearance to his followers after his death and burial was the theme of our April All Age Service. Revd Simon took the service, very ably helped by the children who did the readings and led us in their own prayers. Everyone, from the very young to the most senior, joined in the lively hymns with great enthusiasm. Joanna Saunders News and views from around the Community . . .(continued)

Smile Lines An announcement in the Deaths column of The Times on 4th May was for a ‘much loved’ Reverend on 1st May 2019 aged 92. Funeral service to be held at St Clement’s Church on Saturday 18th March at noon’. As organist of our village church I should, maybe, be grateful for such an unusually extended time to prepare the choir and the voluntaries. Though I would like to suggest to the deceased family that they change funeral directors if this is the earliest date they can manage to arrange. Julia Josephs

6 7 Parish News (...continued) St. Pe t e r a n d St. Pa u l ’s Ch u r ch , Wa n g f o r d Ch u r c h St r e e t , NR34 8RR April has been a busy month for St Peter and St Paul. We have had two baptisms; Mason Davis, who lives with his family in Wangford, and Erin Acworth, whose grandparents are residents. On both occasions the church was packed and we rejoiced to have the families and friends of the infants with us. (See inside back cover for photos). We have also had a splendid churchyard working party one Saturday morning, where much was accomplished in the area behind the church. Our thanks go to George Ives and the regular mowing team, who do a grand job, and to all the extras who turned up to help clear the winter debris, not forgetting those who provided the workforce with coffee and delicious cake. Then there was the APCM, at which we welcomed back Valerie Beckett as Churchwarden, and a new member, Noelle Barlow, to the PCC. By the time you read this the wonderful concert of chamber music, organised by the Ives family will be upon us, Saturday 1st June at 7.30pm. This will surely be a memorable evening of exceptional music, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. There may be tickets left for late comers, but we can’t promise anything! Lastly, on Sunday 30th June, the fifth SundayTeam Service will be held at St Peter and St Paul,Wangford, when we will celebrate, with our friends across the Team, our Patronal Festival at the 11.15am Eucharist, followed, of course, by refreshments. We look forward to seeing you. Jackie Casement News and views from around the Community . . .(continued) Mothers’ Union We had several visitors at our meeting on 10th May, who came to hear about the work of the Access Community Trust in and its work for the homeless, whose numbers have increased on our streets. Our guest speaker, Nicola Anderson, gave an inspirational talk about the different kinds of help provided, not only hostels and emergency accommodation, but medical and other kinds of advice too. (Regular gifts of toiletries, bed linen and good second hand clothing, especially warm coats, are always welcome). We meet next on Friday 14th June, for a social afternoon – tea at the Boating Lake Cafe beginning at 3.00pm. On Wednesday 26th June, there is a Quiet Day being organised for the North Suffolk Area, at St Margaret’s Reydon. It is to be led by Andrea Skevington who is a Christian writer and lives in Suffolk. This is open to anyone who is interested (contact me for details). You should bring a packed lunch, but tea and coffee will be provided. Mrs Jeanette Wallond (722212)

St Mary’s enjoyed our share of congregation attendances, which always creates a sense of belonging and friendship. From the number of posters I receive from George Fisher it would seem that all our surrounding parishes are hard at work creating events for a multiple range of interesting community activities in the weeks ahead. In our village of , as well as continuing with our usual and very popular coffee mornings, film evening, gardening and walking clubs, we are arduously working towards the Country Teas 50th year celebrations. Linda Hill has sent this request:- The Teas are nearly upon us, this special year the dates are July 27th & 28th, and August 3rd & 4th. Again we ask the community and friends outside the village, for helpers and volunteers to make this event memorable. If you like to bake, waitress, wash up, prepare food/cake trays, help in the bric-a-brac, make tea/coffee, or behind the scenes help, etc please contact Linda Hill. (Details below) However small or large, it is all of great value. E-mail or just ring for a chat to see what we can work out especially for you. It is a great event that Uggeshall is proud of, so come and join our happy team. There also will be a community meeting to talk about the Teas, on Thursday June 19th at 7.30pm in the old school hall, all welcome to come along for those who wish to help. Also to discuss which other charities to give to again this year, as votes will be on this night. God among the ruins The tragic fire at Note Dame Cathedral shocked the whole world. Seeing such a magnificent building engulfed in flames saddened all who saw the devastation unfold. It was a monumental blow to the nation of France. It will take years to rebuild this famous place of worship. One striking image from the fire showed the interior of the church scorched and ruined, its art treasures lost, its contents still smouldering. But high up in the background, unbowed by the flames, stands a golden cross, brightly shining in the darkness of the surrounding debris. Since the fire took place at Easter, it is hard not to see this picture as a parable. The place of worship may be destroyed, but not the God we worship. The message of the Cross, at the centre of our faith, remains a timeless, undamaged truth. Even among the ruins of our own lives the Cross stands tall, reminding us of the presence of God and His grip on our lives.

Sri Lanka Easter church bombings More than 250 people were killed following Easter service bomb attacks against churches in Sri Lanka. Around two million Christians live in the Buddhist-majority nation where Christians from Buddhist and Hindu backgrounds face discrimination for their faith. The growth of Christianity in Sri Lanka since 1980 has met with violent opposition from Buddhist extremists. Persecution has intensified since 2012, coinciding with a rise in Buddhist nationalism.Militants have burned churches and attacked Christians. In many cases, violent mobs have been led by Buddhist monks. Christians say local government officials and police do little to prevent the attacks – and are sometimes complicit in them. Anti-Christian violence has abated somewhat since 2015, when President Maithripala Sirisena came to power, pledging to uphold religious freedoms guaranteed in the constitution. “The scale of the horror takes our breath away,” says Release International.“But terrorism can never overcome the central truth of the Gospel – Christ is risen. Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka and wherever Christians face violence around the world.”

Charity No 1119037 Parish Giving Scheme Presentation for Waveney & Blyth Deanery on Tuesday 11TH June at 7.30 pm at Village Hall. Further to the advance notification given we are pleased to invite you to the Waveney& Blyth PGS Presentation on 11th June at 7.30pm at Ringsfield Village Hall. Julie Podd (PGS Adviser) and Lee Jukes (Stewardship Manager) will be visiting our Deanery to launch the PGS at a local level; a direct debit scheme which pays donations directly into your account, run by the PGS charity and supported by our Bishops. The PGS was launched here in January 2018 and has so far been a real success. At present we have already reached just over 20% Diocesan coverage (98 parishes have alreadysigned-up) and just under 450 donors giving regularly to their parish! The month of December 2018 saw over £40,000 of donations collected by parishes through the Scheme. The PGS is an efficient way to give directly to your parish. Advantages are: · Free to parishes and suitable for large or small parishes · Easy to use and reduces parish workload · Automatic collection of Gift Aid · Improves your cash flow · Helps overcome static giving (optional inflationary increase) · Can increase planned giving This is a great opportunity to find out more about the PGS and how it can help improve and sustain your parish finances. The PGS Adviser, Julie will be available to meet with benefices in the weeks following the meeting to help you plan how to implement the PGS locally and to discuss strategies to increase planned giving in your parishes. We look forward to welcoming you at the presentation at Ringsfield and would be grateful if you could confirm that you are able to attend. Please reply to [email protected]

27 News and views from around the Community . . .(continued) Hearing and Mobility Loss My quarterly article this time focuses firstly, on babies and school children, and secondly, on portable hearing loops. Hearing Loss in Children: Babies learn to speak by copying their parent’s voices, but only if they can hear them. Hearing tests for new-borns and older children are therefore vital. Indeed, delays in detecting hearing loss can have life-long effects. I recently spoke to three local residents, all of whom have had experience of teaching children with hearing loss, with a range of disabilities. They each demonstrated very clear job satisfactionmaking these comments: ‘That lightbulb moment when a child understands a new concept’ ‘When a deaf child can fully partake in a lesson’ ‘Teaching literacy to Early Years children was a blessing’ ‘A shift from child-centred to data-centred education’ I thank Sally, Henry and Leigh for all the valuable insights that they have given me in my senior years, and for all that they and their colleagues have done to improve the lives of children and young people. Portable Hearing Loops: For years, portable hearing loops have been helpful in the classroom, used in conjunction with individual hearing aids, but they are also available to adults for use in the community. These units are usually square and black bearing a blue ‘Ear/T’ logo. They have a field of about one metre square, so there is usually room to move about for both hearer and listener. I have bought my own, and I find it a great blessing, but they can only work in conjunction with personal hearing aids which have a loop setting. There is loop unit available at the reception area of the Sole Bay Health Centre. The patient can carry the loopinto the consultation room and place it on the desk between the patient and the health practitioner. It will remove most of the echoes from all the hardsurfaces, and greatly improve communication. Watch out also for the ‘Ear/T’ signs at other places including many supermarket check-outs, and the Audiology Department at James Paget Hospital. (See photo inside back cover) For those with hearing loss, we can help each other by providing some feed-back via this magazine or by e-mail to: [email protected] at any time. Let’s be hearing you!
