Bus Rapid Transit Service Breaks Ground in Mississauga
No. H0xx/10 For release August 20, 2010 BUS RAPID TRANSIT SERVICE BREAKS GROUND IN MISSISSAUGA MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO — Bob Dechert, Member of Parliament, Mississauga-Erindale, the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Ontario’s Transportation Minister, Her Worship Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga and Gary McNeil, GO Transit Managing Director participated in a groundbreaking ceremony today to mark the start of construction of the Mississauga Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor. This project, which is expected to be completed in spring 2013, will improve local and inter-regional bus operations across the City of Mississauga. It involves constructing an 11-kilometre east-west busway across the City of Mississauga between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Renforth Drive in the City of Toronto and a total of 12 stations along the route with related commuter facilities. “Investments in public transit creates jobs and boosts the Canadian economy,” said MP Dechert. “This rapid transit system will provide commuters in Mississauga with a more efficient transit option, while cutting commute times and taking more cars off the road.” “This is great news for Mississauga residents,” said Ontario Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne. “When the new bus rapid transit line is finished, more commuters will be able to leave their cars at home and take public transit. Investing in public transit is part of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario plan. Better public transit means a better quality of life for Ontario families.” (TBC) “We are doing everything we can to make Mississauga a transit-oriented city and show our commitment to ensure we meet the needs of residents and businesses,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. -

APPENDIX B CBSC Decision 11/12-1881 & -1942 CFRB-AM re comments made on The City with Mayor Rob Ford The Complaints The CBSC received a total of 64 complaints about this broadcast. Of those, 36 were provided with the opportunity to request a ruling (the remaining 28 either did not provide enough information to order copies of the broadcast or the complainants clearly had not actually heard the broadcast themselves). Of the 36 complainants who were given the opportunity to request a ruling, only 2 did so. Their complaints are reproduced here: File 11/12-1881 The CBSC received the following complaint on May 7, 2012: I am writing to complain about blatantly offensive language and comments used during Sunday, May 6th’s broadcast of The City with Mayor Rob Ford on CFRB 1010 of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, airing between 1PM and 3PM Eastern Standard Time. During this broadcast, Mayor Ford and his guests made several remarks that were quite offensive: - When referring to Daniel Dale, a Toronto Star reporter that Ford had recently had a run-in with, they said, “I’ve been told the Star purposely assigned their most effeminate reporter". - When referring to former mayoral front-runner George Smitherman, Menzies (the guest on the show), made a disgusting comment about his sexual orientation and linked this to HIV/AIDS: “Could you imagine if I was at that all-candidates meeting and I went to George Smitherman and I said, ‘You know what, George, being a practicing homosexual and the fact that you’ve been involved with all kinds of illicit drug use, how do we know you won’t engage in high-risk sex and drug use that will bring about HIV-leading-to-AIDS and you’ll die in office?’ I would be run out of town on a rail!” This type of behaviour is contrary to section VI, subsections 2, 3 and 4 of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Equitable Portrayal Code, of which CFRB 1010 is bound to uphold as a member of the CBSC. -

c/o Mennonite Central Committee Ontario The Honourable Deb Matthews, MPP 50 Kent Ave. Minister of Health Kitchener, ON N2G 3R1 10th Floor, Hepburn Block 80 Grosvenor Street Toronto, Ontario M7A 2C4 March 25, 2010 Dear Minister Matthews, The decision the McGuinty government has taken to end the Special Diet Allowance for people on Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program has been interpreted as a disturbing signal about the degree to which government is committed to the goals of poverty reduction and the importance of protecting the human rights of people with disabilities. However, it also presents you with the opportunity to create a new program that will address the acknowledged shortcomings of the Special Diet Allowance program, while ensuring continuation of the important financial support it provides to people with documented health challenges. In light of the government's announcement that the Ministry of Health will be creating a replacement program for the Special Diet Allowance, we are writing to forward our proposal for Five Principles that should form the basis for this new program. The 25 in 5 Network and its partners, the ODSP Action Coalition and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), are circulating the enclosed Five Principles document to other partner organizations, individuals, and supporters. We trust that you will hear from many around the province who also believe that the new program must be based on these principles. Statements about the scope and mandate of the new program have been made by members of government that have led many to fear that people currently receiving Special Diet will no longer be adequately supported by our government. -

WHAT THE NEW DOUG FORD GOVERNMENT MEANS FOR THE ENERGY SECTOR – A DETAILED ANALYSIS Posted on July 4, 2018 Categories: Insights, Publications With a new majority provincial government now fully in control of Ontario’s policy landscape, McMillan LLP and McMillan Policy Vantage Group are pleased to provide their insight into what lies ahead for clients and investors in the Energy sector. The New Energy Minister Ontario’s new Minister of Energy already has significant experience with the job ahead, having served in the equivalent federal portfolio in the Cabinet of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In that role, Hon. Greg Rickford would have engaged somewhat more on the oil and gas file than the electricity file, but having been responsible for the National Energy Board, he will be very familiar with the nuances of managing a regulated portfolio, and a regulator. Minister Rickford is the MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, the most northerly of the PC Party’s 76 ridings. He is also among the most educated, holding a nursing diploma from Mohawk College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Victoria University, civil and common law degrees from McGill University, and an MBA from Université Laval. Working as a nurse early in his career, Mr. Rickford was stationed in remote First Nations communities across Northern Ontario. He continued to work with Indigenous groups in the north as a lawyer, and later as the federal MP. The fact that Minister Rickford is one of only three members of the Ford executive with any Cabinet-level experience at all will serve him well, as he assumes the responsibilities previously carried by no less than three of his Liberal predecessors; in addition to Energy, he also serves as Minister of Northern Development, Mines, and Indigenous Affairs. -

Abstract This article examines the deepening integration of market imperatives throughout the province of Ontario. We do this by, first, examining neoliberalism’s theoretical underpinnings, second, reviewing Ontario’s historical context, and third, scrutinizing the Open Ontario Plan, with a focus on proposed changes to employment standards legislation. We argue that contrary to claims of shared restraint and the pressing need for public austerity, Premier McGuinty’s Liberal’s have re‐branded and re‐packaged core neoliberal policies in such a manner that costs are socialized and profits privatized, thereby intensifying class polarization along with its racialized and gendered diversities. Résumé Cet article analyse l’intégration de plus en plus profonde des impératifs du marché dans la province de l’Ontario. Mayor Compton thanked Karen and her staff involved with the preparation of the AMO packages for a job well done, noting this was one of the largest slate of Ministries this Council has been fortunate to meet with during an AMO Conference. 2. IMFG focuses on the fiscal health and governance challenges facing large cities and city-regions. Its objective is to spark and inform public debate, and to engage the academic and policy communities around important issues of municipal finance and governance. The Institute conducts original research on issues facing cities in Canada and around the world; promotes high-level discussion among Canada’s government, academic, corporate and community leaders through conferences and roundtables; and supports graduate and post-graduate students to build Canada’s cadre of municipal finance and governance experts. It is the only institute in Canada that focuses solely on municipal finance issues in large cities and city-regions. IMFG is funded by the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto, Avana Capital Corporation, and TD Bank Group.
