In literature the figure of Woman as Victim has evolved according to shifting fashions and (male) desires until, in contemporary avant-garde writings, themes of sexual violence perform an intrinsic role in sophisticated textual praxis, Woman’s body becoming the playground for male artistic expression and textual experimentation. -

Contact: Laurie Duke [email protected] or 212/998-6782 ENERGY THAT IS ALL AROUND Mission School: Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, Ruby Neri Early 1990s works on view at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery April 15–July 12, 2014 New York City (February 28, 2014)—Presenting more than 125 works by five artists who launched their careers in a gritty San Francisco neighborhood in the early 1990s, ENERGY THAT IS ALL AROUND/Mission School is the first East Coast museum exhibition to highlight these artworks that have achieved cult-like status in the Bay Area and beyond. Most are never-before- seen early pieces from the artists’ own collections. On view at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery from April 15 to July 12, the show was curated by Natasha Boas and organized by the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), where Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, and Ruby Neri were students, and where they hung out with Margaret Kilgallen and Chris Johanson. ENERGY THAT IS ALL AROUND features paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations (including a number of the artists’ classic “cluster” pieces) alongside more recent works created especially for this exhibition. Also included is an extensive selection of ephemera, such as sketches, letters, journals, scrapbooks, and cut-outs. Johanson, Kilgallen, McCarthy, McGee, and Neri came into their own as young visual artists in San Francisco’s Mission District at a time when affordable housing and studio space was still available for those bucking the mainstream. The early 1990s also heralded a Bay Area dot-com boom, which brought an influx of young professionals, upscale shops, chic restaurants, and eviction threats to the Mission District, then a more diverse neighborhood offering cheap rent and food. -

For some time now, scholars have been questioning the received idea that George Sand was an idealist writer whose novelistic art stood in opposition to the realism of her (male) contemporaries. Manon Mathias’s exploration of vision in Sand’s novels brings a refreshing and unique perspective to this conversation. The book’s central claim is that Sand’s œuvre was aimed at “bridging the gap between physical sight and abstract vision” (p. 3). As such, Mathias throws into sharp relief the ways in which Sand’s novels disrupt the divide between realism and idealism and blur the boundaries between the two canonized modes of novelistic production in nineteenth-century France: Romanticism (which we tend to associate with introspection and abstract vision) and Realism (which emphasized physical observation and mimetic representation). Vision in the Novels of George Sand is conceptually profound in its articulation of vision and the visual; at the same time, it is lucidly written and accessible. The book also casts a wide net, relating the concept of vision to literary esthetics, social utopianism, painting, and scientific investigation. Mathias’s study moves chronologically through Sand’s corpus. Chapter one reads Sand’s early novels, such as Indiana, Valentine, and Lélia, as they engage with what may be termed as visual realism, or the practice of reproducing social reality. -

Thus Charles G. D. Roberts, translator of Les anciens canadiens, defines literary translation in Canada as a vehicle for knowledge. But what kind of knowledge is it which English Canada expects from Quebec literature? According to Roberts it lies in the articula- tion of a "natural" link between the realms of the literary and the political, between the aesthetic object and the society it is supposed to represent. This confident as- sumption, based on what we would consider a naïve theory of representationalism in literature, has nevertheless become a persistent theme in the presentation of Quebec novels in English. Translators' prefaces, one after the other, establish the trans- lation's doubly authentic nature as literature and as a revelation of socio-political reality.2 Mobilized in the interest of the national cause, literary translations are charged with the task of making an alien reality less opaque, of offering the key to an otherwise dark society. The conception of translation reflected in this tradition seems to contradict the traditional premise which equates translation much more readily with deformation and betrayal than with knowledge. In fact, though translated literary texts have been the object of study since at least the mid-nineteenth century, the epistemo- logical status of translations has never been fixed. In what ways do translations — as translations — produce specific knowledge? In proposing to render both the literary and the ethnographic truth of the novels they translate, Canadian translators seem to be proposing an explicit epistemo- logical frame of reference for their work. -

Critical Reception and Postmodern Violation of Generic Conventions in Jacques Brossard’s “Monument aux marges”: L’Oiseau de feu Amy J. Ransom xcitement over what appeared to be a monument of la sci- ence-fiction québécoise (SFQ) in the making accompanied the release of L’oiseau de feu-1. Les années d’apprentissage (1989), Ethe first volume of a new series by Jacques Brossard. Its author swept Canada’s awards for genre literature in 1990, receiving the Casper (now the Aurora Prize) for best work in French, as well as Québec’s Prix Boréal, and the Grand Prix de la science-fiction et du fantastique québé- cois. At the time, Claude Janelle asserted in L’année de la science-fiction et du fantastique québécois 1989 that “Il s’agit certainement du projet le plus ambitieux de l’histoire de la SF québécoise et qui pourrait devenir, au terme de l’entreprise, un véritable monument” (41; emphasis added).1 A decade after the publication of the series’ last volume in 1997, this essay examines the question implied in Janelle’s use of the conditional: has L’oiseau de feu realized the potential that critics saw in it when it first appeared? On the one hand, its author has been canonized by Québec’s science- fiction and fantasy community with the recent renaming of the Grand Prix de la Science-fiction et du fantastique québécois as the Prix Jacques Brossard. Academic and literary critic Michel Lord describes Brossard as one of five “incontournables” writers of science fiction in Québec (with Daniel Sernine, Esther Rochon, Élisabeth Vonarburg, and Jean-Pierre April) (“Feu roulant” 159). -

He began his teaching career at the Johns Hopkins University, where he received the B.A. degree in 1887, and the Ph.D. in 1890. He later taught at the University of Wisconsin and at Harvard,where he was Henry CharlesLea Professor of Medieval History at the time of his retirement in 1931, and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from 1908 to 1924. He served as president of the American Historical Association, 1922, and was a founder and the second president of the Medieval Academy of America, 1926.
