A Show of One's Own: The History of Television and the Single Girl in America from 1960. by Erin Kimberly Brown A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfillment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2015 © Erin Kimberly Brown 2015 Author's Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis analyzes the image of the single girl in American history from 1960. The changes made to her lifestyle through technology, politics, education and the workforce are discussed, as is the impact made by the second-wave feminist movement. The evolution seen is traced in detail through five pivotal television series (That Girl, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Murphy Brown, Ally McBeal and Sex and the City) that displayed to millions of viewers across the nation how unmarried women were building their lives and the challenges that they experienced. These programs were an important part of their female audience's life, highlighting what was possible to achieve, yet they were not always greeted with the highest regard. Judgment of the single women's lifestyle was seen from writers and politicians who commented on their unmarried status, their sexuality and pregnancies outside of marriage. Even television networks and producers would, at times, be unconvinced of the single female's choices. -

Judith Butler’s concept from Gender Trouble of “gender as a performance,” which says that normative behavior for a given gender is reinforced by culture, helps to explain how girls learn to behave according to our culture’s rules for appropriate girlhood. Television reinforces for intellectual girls that they must perform their gender appropriately, or suffer the consequences of being invisible and unpopular, and that they will win rewards for performing in more traditionally feminine ways. 1990-2006 featured a large number of hour-long television dramas and dramedies starring teenage characters, and aimed at a young audience, including Beverly Hills, 90210, My So-Called Life, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Freaks and Geeks, and Gilmore Girls. In most teen shows there is a designated smart girl who is not afraid to demonstrate her interest in math or science, or writing or reading. In lieu of ethnic or racial minority characters, she is often the “other” of the group because of her less conventionally attractive appearance, her interest in school, her strong sense of right and wrong, and her lack of experience with boys. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Margaret Rodgers for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Media Studies to be taken June 2018 Title: Voices of a Generation: HBO's Postfeminist Anti-heroines Erin Hanna My research focuses on Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City (HBO, t 998- 2004) and Hannah Horvath from Girls (HBO, 2012-2017). Both series elicited a range of responses from viewers and critics who called into question the "likeability" of the protagonists. Out of this extra-textual discourse, Carrie and Hannah were conceived of as anti-heroines. Television anti-heroes like Tony Soprano (The Sopranos, HBO, 1999-2007), Walter White (Breaking Bad, AMC, 2008-2013), or Dexter Morgan (Dexter, Showtime, 2006-2013) are characters who skirt the boundaries between regular life and outlaw culture. They uphold hegemonic masculinity by reasserting their power through the form of vigilante justice. Carrie and Hannah are complete departures from the anti-hero trope. They are unabashedly feminine, and oftentimes, remarkable passive and ambivalent characters. In the past, female characters existed as complacent counterparts to a male lead. SATC and Girls construct a new space for complex and dynamic women on television. -
