Effective Crypto Ransomawre Detection Using Hardware Performance Counters John Podolanko Department of Computer Science & Engineering The University of Texas at Arlington Supervisor Jiang Ming, PhD In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science May 2019 Abstract Systems affected by malware in the past 10 years has risen from 29 million to 780 million, which tells us it is a rapidly growing threat. Viruses, ransomware, worms, backdoors, botnets, etc. all come un- der malware. Ransomware alone is predicted to cost $11.5 billion in 2019. As the downtime, data loss, and financial damages are ris- ing, researchers continue to look for new ways to mitigate this threat. However, the common approaches have shown to yield high false posi- tive rates or delayed detection rates resulting in data loss. My research explores a dynamic approach for early-stage ransomware detection by modeling its behavior using hardware performance counters with low overhead. The analysis begins on a bare-metal machine running ran- somware which is profiled for hardware calls using Intel R VTuneTM Amplifier before it compromises the system. By using this approach, I am able to generate models using hardware performance counters extracted by VTuneTM on known ransomware samples collected from VirusTotal and Hybrid Analysis, and I use that data to train the de- tection system using machine learning techniques. I have shown that hardware performance counters can provide effective metrics for use in detecting and mitigating the ever-growing ransomware threat faced by the world while ensuring no data is lost. ii Acknowledgements The author thanks the supervisory committee for all their guidance, support, and patience. -

The web has improved our life and has provided us with more oppor- tunities to access information and do business. Nonetheless, due to the preva- lence of trackers on websites, web users might be subject to profiling while ac- cessing the web, which impairs their online privacy. Privacy browser add-ons, such as DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Ghostery and Privacy Badger, extend the privacy protection that the browsers offer by default, by identifying and blocking trackers. However, the work that focuses on the usability of the priva- cy add-ons, as well as the users’ awareness, feelings, and thoughts towards them, is rather limited. In this work, we conducted usability evaluations by uti- lising System Usability Scale and Think-Aloud Protocol on three popular priva- cy add-ons, i.e., DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Ghostery and Privacy Badg- er. Our work also provides insights into the users’ awareness of online privacy and attitudes towards the abovementioned privacy add-ons; in particular trust, concern, and control. Our results suggest that the participants feel safer and trusting of their respective add-on. It also uncovers areas for add-on improve- ment, such as a more visible toolbar logo that offers visual feedback, easy ac- cess to thorough help resources, and detailed information on the trackers that have been found. Is the Market for Digital Privacy a Failure?1 Caleb S. Fuller2 Abstract Why do many digital firms rely on collecting consumer information–a practice that survey evidence shows is widely disliked? Why don’t they, instead, charge a fee that would protect privacy? This paper empirically adjudicates between two competing hypotheses. The first holds that firms pursue this strategy because consumers are ill-informed and thus susceptible to exploitation. The second holds that this strategy reasonably approximates consumer preferences. By means of survey, I test a.) the extent of information asymmetry in digital markets, b.) consumers’ valuation of privacy, and c.) whether government failure contributes to consumer mistrust of information collection. My results indicate that a.) the extent of information asymmetry is minimal, b.) there is significant divergence between “notional” and “real” demand for privacy and c.) that government contributes to consumer distrust of information collection by private firms. Significantly, almost 82% of Google users are unwilling to pay anything for increased digital privacy. The Right to Privacy in the Digital Age April 9, 2018 Dr. Keith Goldstein, Dr. Ohad Shem Tov, and Mr. Dan Prazeres Presented on behalf of Pirate Parties International Headquarters, a UN ECOSOC Consultative Member, for the Report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Our Dystopian Present Living in modern society, we are profiled. We accept the necessity to hand over intimate details about ourselves to proper authorities and presume they will keep this information secure- only to be used under the most egregious cases with legal justifications. Parents provide governments with information about their children to obtain necessary services, such as health care. We reciprocate the forfeiture of our intimate details by accepting the fine print on every form we sign- or button we press. In doing so, we enable second-hand trading of our personal information, exponentially increasing the likelihood that our data will be utilized for illegitimate purposes. Often without our awareness or consent, detection devices track our movements, our preferences, and any information they are capable of mining from our digital existence. This data is used to manipulate us, rob from us, and engage in prejudice against us- at times legally. We are stalked by algorithms that profile all of us. This is not a dystopian outlook on the future or paranoia. This is present day reality, whereby we live in a data-driven society with ubiquitous corruption that enables a small number of individuals to transgress a destitute mass of phone and internet media users. In this paper we present a few examples from around the world of both violations of privacy and accomplishments to protect privacy in online environments. -

This report covers the period from October 1, 2016, through September 30, 2020. The Department’s privacy program is supported by a team of dedicated privacy professionals who strive to build a culture and understanding of privacy within the complex and diverse mission work of the Department. The work of the Department’s privacy team is evident in the care, consideration, and dialogue about privacy that is incorporated in the daily operations of the Department. During this reporting period, there has been an evolving landscape of technological development and advancement in areas such as artificial intelligence, biometrics, complex data flows, and an increase in the number of cyber security events resulting in significant impacts to the privacy of individuals.
