Kaylor, 33° Presiding officers to 33° Masons who have been selected to lead James M. Williamson October 2013 SCOTTISH RITE NEWS Page 3 Happy Anniversary? In August, we celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Our ancient constitutions called for two Supreme Councils in the new world. The first council was formed in Charleston, S.C., and continues to this day as the Southern Jurisdiction. The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction was officially chartered in 1813, although its brethren had already been meeting as Scottish Rite Masons. That charter certified our right to conduct business as a Supreme Council. So who cares? Does it really mean anything to you or me, reading this in the Valley of Dayton? After all, old is not automatically better. Sometimes, it’s just old. Or, more likely, it depends. You can drive an old car because it is a classic design and really cool ride; but if you want to drive safely on today’s highways, you’ll also keep a newer car with antilock brakes, power steering, and air bags for day-to-day driving. You need to live in today’s world. Likewise, Scottish Rite, as a society of brothers and fellows, is only as good as our actions today. Yes, we have timeless core values. Yes, we have a legitimate Masonic history. Yes, we have loyal members. But to make Scottish Rite mean something, we need to live those core values today. We need to honor our obligations – today. We need to support our lodges – today. We need to sustain our families – today. We need to help our brothers in need – today. This year, the Valley of Dayton did a lot of good things. We helped local youth through the award of Abbott scholarships. We helped children with Dyslexia learn to read. We conducted ring services for the families of deceased members. We helped those brothers who found it difficult to pay their membership fees due to financial difficulties. We took Scottish Rite on the road to our 32 Clubs. We introduced over a hundred new members to Scottish Rite. We helped preserve the historic Dayton Masonic Center as an iconic symbol of Freemasonry in Ohio. In August, the leadership from the Valley of Dayton traveled to Washington D.C., as three presiding officers from our Valley were coroneted 33º Masons. Congratulations to Illustrious Brothers David Buchheit, Martin Trent, and Christopher Atchison. It deserves note that 33º members pay their own travel and lodging when they attend a Supreme Council session. You’ve heard the old saying, “put your money where your mouth is?” The 33º members do just that. We need also to remember in our prayers, Illustrious Hebert Clonch, who was made a 33º Mason in a special ceremony at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Hospital, just a week before his death.

  • The Advent of the Cryptic Degrees
THE ADVENT OF THE CRYPTIC DEGREES By Comp. E.J. Frew Over the years there have been countless Masonic Degrees created and a very large number of these were invented in France to meet a demand for more light on the Old Testament story. Many of these degrees usually became known as "So-and-so's Rite" and lasted no longer than the lifetime of the author, who, being seized by a particular legend in current literature, had concocted a ritual for his personal profit. Others, of less ephemeral appeal, were carried to the United States in the wake of the Rite of Perfection and eventually found their way to Great Britain. Some of these have been absorbed in existing sovereign obedience’s, e.g. 13 in the A. & A. Rite, two in the Allied Masonic Degrees and four in the Cryptic Rite. In case any Cryptic Mason is getting ready to contradict this number, at this time in history the four degrees were, Most Excellent Master, Royal Master, Select Master and Super Excellent Master. The origin of the degrees is traced back to the middle of the 18th century. W.J. Hughan, in a note written before 1891 says, "Cryptic Freemasonry has been worked in England, more or less regularly from about 1760, in one form or another, as the degrees are in part, nearly allied to some of the Ancient and Accepted Rite. For those not so advanced in Masonic knowledge this rite is known as 'The Rose'. Of later years these degrees seem almost to have been lost sight of, and the knowledge of their working nearly, if not wholly, died out save in Scotland under the wing of the 'Early Grand Encampment'." He also has written in the Leicester Lodge of Research "The degrees of Royal and Select Masters are said to have been introduced into the United States of America about 1761, and soon became popular in that country.

May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Dear Sir Knights and Cousins, I greet you with a traditional Irish blessing, and I pray that you are safe and healthy during these unique times. While this year has been challenging, there have been many special events that have strengthened our hope for a bright future of not just sustainability and continuity, but also of growth and Light. This publication is being stylized as a Knightly News Magazine, as it places emphasis on vignettes that promote a deeper understanding of our Knighthood with thought provoking articles. Education being one of the pillars of our Mission Statement, I believe that a proper application of what we learn and share will help to keep our councils vibrant and prospering. I firmly believe that it is the duty of each Cousin to impart what they have learned to others, sharing their Light and strengthening this Order of Knighthood. A lot of effort has gone into this publication and I extend my appreciation to our contributing writers and to M.E. Kevin B. Sample, who published this edition of the Knightly News Magazine.

  • "The Capstone" an Attempt to Identify The
"The Capstone" An attempt to identify the 'Head of the Snake' Secret Societies Order of Hospitallers (link) The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of Hospitallers or simply Hospitallers, were a group of men attached to a hospital in Jerusalem that was founded by Blessed Gerard around 1023 out of which two major Orders of Chivalry evolved, the Order of the Knights of St. Lazarus and the Order of the Knights of St. John, later to be known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The Hospitallers arose around the work of an Amalfitan hospital located at the Muristan site in Jerusalem, founded around 1023 to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the Western Christian conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the organisation became a religious and military order under its own charter, and was charged with the care and defence of the Holy Land. Following the conquest of the Holy Land by Islamic forces, the Order operated from Rhodes, over which it was sovereign, and later from Malta where it administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily. The Order was weakened by Napoleon's capture of Malta in 1798 and became dispersed throughout Europe. It regained strength during the early 19th century as it repurposed itself towards humanitarian and religious causes. The modern continuation of the mediaeval Order is the Roman Catholic Sovereign Military Order of Malta, headquartered in Rome; allied Protestant orders are headquartered in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. The first master of the original Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was Brother Gerard (whose origins remain a mystery).

  • Degrees of the York Rite.Pdf
The Solomonic Degrees of the York Rite Very early in our Masonic experiences we were charged to consider ourselves called on to make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge. Many do take this injunction seriously. They advance their Masonic knowledge by regular attendance of their own Lodge or other Lodges, by learning the rituals of the degrees, by reading literature on Masonic history and practices and by talking with other Masons. Since 1717 and the organization of Masonic governance as we understand it, a wide variety of degrees have been developed and worked, many remain with us and some have fallen into misuse. The fabric of Freemasonry as we know it today, in the twenty-first century, is richer as a result of the variety and variations of ritual worked by our early Brethren. Since the middle of the eighteenth century, various efforts have been made to group degrees together and, since the mid nineteenth century, to administer these in various Orders or Masonic bodies (sometimes referred to as concordant or appendant bodies although these terms now are seldom used). In turn the majority of these have been grouped into the Scottish and York Rites and the Shrine as practiced in Ontario and across Canada and North America (although the expression York Rite is merely a shorthand notation as it is not equivalent to the Scottish Rite with its administrative apparatus). A number of the degrees of the York Rite are referred as Solomonic or Hiramic and are focused on the Temples at Jerusalem, of which there were two. The first and best known was built by Solomon, King of Israel and assisted by Hiram, King of Tyre and Hiram Abiff (to a plan of King David) and was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.
