Happy Anniversary?

In August, we celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Our ancient constitutions called for two Supreme Councils in the new world. The first council was formed in Charleston, S.C., and continues to this day as the Southern Jurisdiction. The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction was officially chartered in 1813, although its brethren had already been meeting as Scottish Rite Masons. That charter certified our right to conduct business as a Supreme Council.

So who cares?

Does it really mean anything to you or me, reading this in the Valley of Dayton?

After all, old is not automatically better. Sometimes, it’s just old. Or, more likely, it depends. You can drive an old car because it is a classic design and really cool ride; but if you want to drive safely on today’s highways, you’ll also keep a newer car with antilock brakes, power steering, and air bags for day-to-day driving. You need to live in today’s world.

Likewise, Scottish Rite, as a society of brothers and fellows, is only as good as our actions today. Yes, we have timeless core values. Yes, we have a legitimate Masonic history. Yes, we have loyal members.

But to make Scottish Rite mean something, we need to live those core values today.

We need to honor our obligations – today.

We need to support our lodges – today.

We need to sustain our families – today.

We need to help our brothers in need – today.

This year, the Valley of Dayton did a lot of good things. We helped local youth through the award of Abbott scholarships. We helped children with Dyslexia learn to read. We conducted ring services for the families of deceased members. We helped those brothers who found it difficult to pay their membership fees due to financial difficulties. We took Scottish Rite on the road to our 32 Clubs. We introduced over a hundred new members to Scottish Rite. We helped preserve the historic Dayton Masonic Center as an iconic symbol of Freemasonry in Ohio.

In August, the leadership from the Valley of Dayton traveled to Washington D.C., as three presiding officers from our Valley were coroneted 33º Masons. Congratulations to Illustrious Brothers David Buchheit, Martin Trent, and Christopher Atchison. It deserves note that 33º members pay their own travel and lodging when they attend a Supreme Council session. You’ve heard the old saying, “put your money where your mouth is?” The 33º members do just that. We need also to remember in our prayers, Illustrious Hebert Clonch, who was made a 33º Mason in a special ceremony at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Hospital, just a week before his death. Rest well, my brother.

Happy Anniversary? Yes, it was. Is the Valley poised to improve in the future? Yes it is.

What could make it even better? To have you join us at our next Scottish Rite event. It’s a prop that Scottish Rite Freemasons used during the early 1900s when conferring the 30th degree. Known as the “mysterious ladder,” the words on one side’s rungs call out the seven liberal arts and sciences: grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. The rungs on the other side, marked with translit- erations of Hebrew, reminded initiates of virtues such as understanding, faith, purity and charity. Writing on the sides of the ladder represents love of God and love of your neighbor. These messages, along with the upward-pointing shape of the ladder reminded the candidate of how he could learn and grow as a Mason. While this particular ladder dates to the early 1900s, the history of its use in the Scottish Rite degrees goes back to the mid-1700s, when it appeared in the 24th degree. Scholar Alain Bernheim has found evidence that this degree, complete with an illustration of the ladder, originated in France in 1750. The Francken Manuscript in the collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, which dates to 1783, also includes an illustration of the ladder with the text of the 24th degree, then titled “Grand Elected Knight of Kadosh or Knight of the White and Black Eagle.” As the degrees were rewritten and reorganized into the present-day system, the ladder remained in what became the 30th degree. Ritual books from 1875, 1904 and 1939 include an explanation of the ladder and required the candidates to mount the steps and climb over it before receiving the degree. The 1904 and 1939 books show a scale drawing of the ladder and indicate its placement in a plan of the room or stage. The ritual explained that “it is the only way of entrance to the Order, and we sincerely trust that the lessons taught on its several steps will make a deep and lasting impression on your mind.” Regalia catalogs in the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library collection from the early 1900s offer the ladder “of wood, well made and finished, the proper lettering in both English and Hebrew.” Today, the ladder is no longer used in the 30th degree. Now in the collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, the ladder is currently on view in our exhibition, “A Sublime Brotherhood: Two Hundred Years of Scottish Rite Freemasonry in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.” The ladder helps show the change from intimate degree ceremonies conferred in the lodge room to elaborate staged degrees during the early 1900s. The exhibition will be ongoing into 2014 – we hope you will be able to visit. The Museum is located at 33 Marrett Road in Lexington, Massachusetts, and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday (www. nationalheritagemuseum.org). The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library has a special interest in preserving and interpreting the history of the Scot- tish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, U.S.A. Yet, Scottish Rite regalia, props and accessories form a notable gap in our collection. This is due, in part, to the Scottish Rite’s success over the past 100 years – Valleys used their props and costumes until they wore out. But, now, as times change, many Valleys are consolidating their space and may have sur- plus regalia and ritual items. We hope that they will contact the Museum before throwing anything away. We would love to strengthen our collection in this area. Questions can be addressed to Aimee E. Newell, Ph.D., Director of Collections, [email protected], 781-457-4144. The Knights of St. Andrew exist as a service organization on behalf of all members of their Valley. They are under the immediate supervision of the Valley Trustees and provide services where they are needed. This includes, but not limited to, aiding the Tylers, acting as greeters, providing escort services for dignitaries or for special events, serving as guides, and participating in the Scottish Degree work either by taking part in the Degrees or by helping with stage crew, makeup, robe room, or other areas of need.

Who are the members of the Knights of Saint Andrew?

The unit is restricted to 32nd Degree Masons only and all other members, regardless of their titles and rank or hat colors, CANNOT hold the honor of membership in this majestic group without first being selected and approved by the members. And then, ONLY as an Associate Member. Think of the KSA as a fraternity within a fraternity. You will be among others with like interests who can provide much needed support. The KSA has many veteran Scottish Rite members who can help new members learn about the Valley and help get them involved.

History of the Order

Historically, the Order descends from the Knights Templar who, after their disbanding, were dispersed throughout Europe. In Scotland, they found protection and joined the army with which King Robert Bruce met the invasion of his country led by Edward II of England. The Battle of Bannockburn was being fought on the 24th day of June, 1314 when a group of exiled Templars rode into the fray and turned the tide of battle. This intervention may well have tipped the scales in favor of Scottish independence. In gratitude for their assis- tance on that memorable day by the Templars, Robert the Bruce created the Order of Saint Andrew du Char- don (of the Thistle) of Scotland.

How Do I Join?

Membership is open to all 32nd Degree Masons in good standing in the Valley. To join, fill out a petition at a Reunion or request one from the Valley office. There is a one-time fee of $100 which includes the trademark Glengarry hat and Badge. New members are received as Sergeants in the Order. The rank of Knight is at- tained through the accumulation of points earned by participation in Valley sponsored events and attendance and participation in the annual Reunions.
