(Plates IV-VI.) INTRODUCTION. Antiquity of N al.-In the note appended Shri A. Ghosh, Director-General of Archaeology in India, has very kindly given a description of the archaeological site at Nal, with a brief history of its discovery and subsequent excavations. He has also described the various types of pottery known to be of a funerary character through their association with burials. The distribution of the N 801 type of pottery is lilnited, being confined to two other places, Nundara. in Ba.luchistan and Damb Buthi in Sind. THE CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN FOR THE GANGES RIVER DOLPHIN 2010-2020 National Ganga River Basin Authority Ministry of Environment & Forests Government of India Prepared by R. K. Sinha, S. Behera and B. C. Choudhary 2 MINISTER’S FOREWORD I am pleased to introduce the Conservation Action Plan for the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in the Ganga river basin. The Gangetic Dolphin is one of the last three surviving river dolphin species and we have declared it India's National Aquatic Animal. Its conservation is crucial to the welfare of the Ganga river ecosystem. Just as the Tiger represents the health of the forest and the Snow Leopard represents the health of the mountainous regions, the presence of the Dolphin in a river system signals its good health and biodiversity. This Plan has several important features that will ensure the existence of healthy populations of the Gangetic dolphin in the Ganga river system. First, this action plan proposes a set of detailed surveys to assess the population of the dolphin and the threats it faces. Second, immediate actions for dolphin conservation, such as the creation of protected areas and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, are detailed. Third, community involvement and the mitigation of human-dolphin conflict are proposed as methods that will ensure the long-term survival of the dolphin in the rivers of India. Akhtar, Dr. S.G.S.Zaidi and Mr. Rajesh M ICAR- Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal -263136, Nainital, (Uttarakhand) India E Mail: [email protected] Golden mahseer (Tor putitora), is an important cyprinid which is considered as a flagship species in upland fisheries of Himalayan sub-continent by virtue of its economic, ecological, recreational, heritage, cultural and food values. However, the population of golden mahseer has been greatly dwindling over the years and as a result, it has been declared as ‘endangered’ by IUCN. It is a multiple spawner; spawning season coincides with the onset of rains during May to September with two peaks (May-June & August-September). Males mature at the age of 3+ years while females mature at 5+ years. Mature males are in oozing condition throughout the year whereas ripen females have swollen belly with lemon yellow/brownish-golden colour eggs of diameter 2.0 – 2.5 mm. The flow through hatchery technology for captive breeding and nursery rearing of golden mahseer developed at ICAR-DCFR is the first of its kind in the country and consistently producing golden mahseer seeds. For captive breeding, the brood stock of 800-1500 g can be raised at temperature range of 18-220C in concrete tanks/ FRP tanks @ 2-3 no/m2. Photothermal manipulations coupled with the provision of spawning substratum using bed bio-filter installed in FRP tanks and quality feed (44% protein), with regular health checks helps to achieve multiple spawning in captivity. -

Species Composition and Invasion Risks of Alien Ornamental Freshwater
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Species composition and invasion risks of alien ornamental freshwater fshes from pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia Abdulwakil Olawale Saba1,2, Ahmad Ismail1, Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifi1, Muhammad Rasul Abdullah Halim3, Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid4 & Mohammad Noor Azmai Amal1* The ornamental fsh trade has been considered as one of the most important routes of invasive alien fsh introduction into native freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the species composition and invasion risks of fsh species from 60 freshwater fsh pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia were studied. A checklist of taxa belonging to 18 orders, 53 families, and 251 species of alien fshes was documented. Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST) showed that seven (30.43%), eight (34.78%) and eight (34.78%) species were considered to be high, medium and low invasion risks, respectively. After the calibration of the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) v2 using the Receiver Operating Characteristics, a threshold value of 17 for distinguishing between invasive and non-invasive fshes was identifed. As a result, nine species (39.13%) were of high invasion risk. In this study, we found that non-native fshes dominated (85.66%) the freshwater ornamental trade in Klang Valley, while FISK is a more robust tool in assessing the risk of invasion, and for the most part, its outcome was commensurate with FIST. This study, for the frst time, revealed the number of high-risk ornamental fsh species that give an awareness of possible future invasion if unmonitored in Klang Valley, Malaysia. As a global hobby, fshkeeping is cherished by both young and old people. -

Tell us about the initiatives that Tata Power is doing in sustainability? A. Over its 100 legendary years of existence, Tata Power has set a standard in adopting sustainable practices within its core business domain. Tata Power’s approach to ‘Sustainability’ is to make it the company’s key differentiator and give an edge to the company’s strategic investment, leading to social progress, financial returns, enhanced stakeholder relations, and better environmental management. It is currently focusing growth through renewables and has 33.7% of its capacity (in MW terms) in clean and green generation sources. The target is to maintain 40-50% of its total generation capacity to be sourced from non-fossil fuel-based generation by 2025, as per the Company’s strategic intent. As a responsible company, Tata Power addresses global long-term challenges such as climate change and diminishing resources in a socially, ecologically and economically responsible manner. Decarbonization is one of the sustainability levers for Tata Power and in alignment with this, it provides low carbon customer solutions like electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, solar rooftop solutions, microgrids etc. Under the Tree Mittra afforestation initiative, Tata Power conducts massive plantation drives as compensatory afforestation for greenhouse gas abatement. It established the EV charging stations in Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad, covering power supply, back-end power supply infrastructure and customized EV charging solutions, thus supporting the Indian Government’s ‘National Electric Mobility Mission’.
