Year 5780 By Ellis Schlossenberg, Volunteer Another Year in the Jewish Calenda r 5779 is about to end and a New Year 5780 is about to begin on Sept 29, 2019. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year is one of my favorite times of the year. Fall, is truly the beginning of the most beautiful time of the year--at least in my opinion, and since I am writing this article, I guess that is true. It is the closing of the baseball season (even though it won’t end until November) and the beginning of the football and hockey season, which will all end in disappointing endings for all the local teams. Of course, I am being Mr. Negativity, but what have I truly had to root for since 1983? Bah Humbug!!

Of course, as I have stated it is the beginning of the Jewish Holidays, more specifically Rosh Hashanah. It has and will always be my favorite holiday. At the synagogue, it is a time that I get to see many people who I haven’t seen in a year. You could say I need to attend shul (synagogue) more often and I should, but that's what Yom Kippur (day of atonement) is for, to wash away (repent for all my sins, whether I did them or not). It is also a time when my immediate family gathers at my younger cousin Ellen’s house (only by two months, but she has this habit of reminding me I am older), but certainly not the oldest of all my cousins or siblings. (Yes, I am the baby.)

We talk and eat and EAT and EAT. It is one of two times a year that my sister makes the BEST chopped liver of any chopped liver, I have ever eaten! It is very high in cholesterol, so I make sure I take two pills in the morning since I will be feasting later that day. We have challah, apples with honey, brisket, chicken, different kugels (noodle dishes), vegetables, and my Aunt Carolyn’s, Tzimmes, which is a mixture of carrots, potatoes, prunes (which I could do without) and beef short ribs and many other ingredients you would have to look up. I won’t even get into . SUCH A FEAST. Most important, it is a holiday of reminiscing of past Rosh Hashanahs, of grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles and my late wife Anne, all people loved, that are no longer with us. It is all good and remembering the good times is always a good thing. To my Kensington Club family and my fellow co-workers who are all like family to me, whether you celebrate or not, I wish you a Shanah Tovah Umetukah, a very good and sweet new year!

In Friendship and Love, Ellis
