The Locker-Room Librarian: the Maradona of Literature Dissemination
Date : 23/05/2008 The Locker-Room Librarian: The Maradona of literature dissemination Stig Elvis Furset Norwegian Archive Library and Museum Authority Oslo, Norway Meeting: 85. Literacy and Reading in co-operation with the Public Libraries and Library Services to Multicultural Populations Simultaneous Interpretation: Not available WORLD LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CONGRESS: 74TH IFLA GENERAL CONFERENCE AND COUNCIL 10-14 August 2008, Québec, Canada http://www.ifla.org/iv/ifla74/index.htm ABSTRACT: What is the similarity between a book and a football? Given imagination, you can do tricks with both. What is the similarity between karate and promoting literature among young people? They are both martial arts. What is the similarity between a locker-room librarian and an athlete? They both aim for peak performance. For most libraries and librarians the school system has up to now provided the only avenue for promoting literature among children and young people. The project “Sport and Reading” is different, arising from the realisation that many youngsters spend much of their spare time training or playing for their local team or sports club and that this can provide an arena for the locker-librarian, the Diego Maradona of reading. The locker-librarian is part of a larger initiative aimed at sports in general, both top-class athletes and the everyday amateur. His or her task as a professional librarian is to promote literature by direct contact with youngsters in training throughout a wide range of sports and clubs. Each librarian and club is supplied with a bag of books, some 50 titles, to be loaned out, read and exchanged among the young members. -

7 the Hand of God, and Other Soccer . . . Miracles?
Soccer & Philosophy 1st pages rev 2 2/24/10 6:32 PM Page 89 7 The Hand of God, and Other Soccer . Miracles? KIRK MCDERMID June 1986: It’s early in the second half of a scoreless World Cup quar- terfinal at the Estadio Azteca. Argentina’s Diego Maradona slips the ball to Jorge Valdano, who tries to play it back, but is closed down by England’s Steve Hodge. The ball deflects high off Hodge’s shin, into the path of Maradona and the advancing English goalkeeper Peter Shilton. They both jump—and Diego tips the ball into the net, over Shilton’s out- stretched fist. What?!? Maradona out- jumps Shilton? Incredible! Unbelievable! Miraculous . …? At the time, even the BBC’s commentator didn’t notice the how the goal was scored—and Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser surely didn’t, either. But replays and photographic evidence soon revealed the truth: Maradona had used his hand to tip the ball over the onrushing Shilton. Maradona celebrated the goal as if nothing special (well, over and above an opening goal in a World Cup quarterfinal!) had happened, cheekily remarking in post-match interviews that God had a hand in the goal: it was scored “un poco con la cabeza de Maradona y otro poco con la mano de Dios [a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God].” This quote delighted the Argentinianes, and gave the English fits. In the larger context—a history of imperial colonialism, pre- vious football grievances, and most significantly the recent Falklands Islands conflict—this appeal to providence struck many Argentiniannes as a perfect response. -

DIEGO MARADONA A film by ASIF KAPADIA 2019 – UK – 130 minutes INTERNATIONAL SALES INTERNATIONAL PUBLICITY ALTITUDE FILM SALES Karina Gechtman, Head of International ORGANIC Marketing and Publicity Organicinternational@organic- [email protected] publicity.co.uk DIEGO MARADONA – PRODUCTION NOTES DIEGO MARADONA SHORT SYNOPSIS The third film from the Academy Award® and BAFTA-winning team behind SENNA and AMY, and producer Paul Martin, DIEGO MARADONA is constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage from Maradona’s personal archive with the full support of the man himself. On 5th July 1984, Diego Maradona arrived in Naples for a world-record fee. For seven years all hell broke loose. The world’s most celebrated football icon and the most passionate but dangerous city in Europe were a perfect match for each other. On the pitch, Diego Maradona was a genius. Off the pitch, he was treated like a God. The charismatic Argentine loved a fight against the odds and led Napoli to their first-ever title. It was the stuff of dreams. But there was a price… Diego could do as he pleased while performing miracles on the pitch but, as time passed, darker days closed in. LONG SYNOPSIS Diego Maradona was considered the best player in the world from the moment he burst onto the scene in his native Argentina. And yet success proved elusive. He failed at Barcelona. He was considered a problem player, too interested in partying. Meanwhile, having never won a major tournament, the ailing Italian football giant SSC Napoli were perennial underachievers. Their fanatical support was unequalled in both passion and size. -

Enough to Know 1 Corinthians 13
Enough to Know 1 Corinthians 13 Brett Younger Senior Minister February 3, 2019 The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes the partial comes to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. -
'One Hell of a Player' the Social Construction Of
Final accepted manuscript by Trejo, Fernando Segura Millan & Williams, John accepted in Soccer & Society 20/09/2019. ‘One hell of a player’ The social construction of the early career of Lionel Messi Towards a sociological analysis Abstract This article reviews key circumstances and events in the early development of soccer player Lionel Messi; influences and choices which shaped his stellar career. Our approach is inspired by the sociological contribution of the symbolic interactionist Everett Hughes, who advocated a set of sequences or steps in occupational development. These insights about key ‘turning points’ we combine with the work of French sociologist Pierre-Michel Menger on the development of creative artists. We argue that this interconnected analysis can be used to explore the construction of Messi’s early sporting life: his childhood in the city of Rosario and his very early departure to FC Barcelona, including the role of this father, and of the character required for Messi to become an elite talent. Finally, we also comment on Messi’s uncertain status as a national sporting hero for Argentina. Key words: Lionel Messi - soccer - Argentina – early career – turning points Introduction Lionel Andres Messi Cuccittini (or, as he is better known, Lionel Messi) is one of the first truly iconic global soccer players of the twenty-first century. Thus far, Messi has spent his entire professional career at one club, FC Barcelona of Catalonia, where he has been involved in winning more than 30 senior trophies and five Ballon d’Or awards for the world’s best soccer player, up to 2018. At 1.7m tall and weighing around 72 kilos, Messi is small for a professional soccer player.
