Her parents named her Billie Jane Lee Lorraine after godmother Billie Holiday, her mother Jane (formerly a big band singer), her mother’s ex-roommate Peggy Lee, and the song ‘Sweet Lorraine’. She is the daughter of the late jazz writer Leonard Feather. The Feathers moved to L.A. when Lorraine was 12; at 18, after two years as a theater arts major at L.A. City College, she returned to New York to pursue an acting career. Some touring, off-Broadway work and the Broadway show ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ followed, interspersed with countless waitressing jobs up and down Manhattan’s West Side. Frequently out of work, and discouraged by more than one restaurateur from pursuing a career in the food service industry, Lorraine decided to try singing. She began working with various jazz and Top 40 bands in and around New York. She sang backup for Petula Clark and Grand Funk Railroad, and finally put her own act together, eventually moving back to L.A., where she sang at local jazz clubs. Soon after, she joined producer Richard Perry’s vocal trio Full Swing and recorded three albums with the group. Lorraine wrote lyrics for most of the songs on these releases, some for classic pieces like Duke Ellington’s “Rockin’ in Rhythm,” the Yellowjackets’ ‘Ballad of the Whale’ and Horace Henderson’s “Big John’s Special” (later heard in the movie ‘Swing Shift’).

    Fourplay Bio For two decades, the contemporary jazz quartet known as Fourplay has enjoyed consistent artistic and commercial success by GraftinG elements of R&B, pop and a variety of other sounds to their unwaverinG jazz foundations. In the course of a dozen recordings – six of which have climbed to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album charts – the superGroup has continued to explore the limitless dimensions and permutations of jazz while at the same time appealinG to a broad mainstream audience. The Fourplay story beGins in 1990, with keyboardist Bob James, who had already established himself as a formidable fiGure in keyboard jazz – not just as an instrumentalist but as a composer and arranGer as well – with solo recordinGs datinG as far back as the mid 1960s. In 1990, James reunited with his old friend, session drummer, producer, composer & recordinG artist Harvey Mason (Herbie Hancock, Barbra Streisand, Notorious B.I.G.), durinG the recordinG of James’ Grand Piano Canyon album. Also involved in the project were Guitarist Lee Ritenour (SerGio Mendes) and bassist/vocalist Nathan East (Barry White, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins). The Grand Piano Canyon sessions marked the Genesis of the Group that eventually came to be known as Fourplay. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1991, and included a blend of jazz, R&B and pop. The oriGinal lineup of James/Ritenour/East/Mason stayed toGether for three successive albums, includinG Elixir (1994), a set that features some hiGh-profile Guest vocalists: Phil Collins, Patti Austin and Peabo Bryson. East also delivers some noteworthy vocal contributions on Elixir, and has continued to do so throuGhout most of Fourplay’s subsequent studio outinGs.

By Stephen Holden June 6, 2007 There was a time in American music when Ella Fitzgerald seemed to be an eternal constant, an irresist- ible force and immovable object rolled into one mighty voice. At once girlish, wise and all-forgiving, Fitzgerald’s singing transcended age, race, sex and genre. It couldn’t last forever, of course. This serene, ever-cheerful jazz monument, who appeared to channel music from a benign realm somewhere beyond the solar system, was neither eternal nor unchanging. As many wonderful vintage television clips reveal in “We Love Ella! A Tribute to the First Lady of Song,” a PBS “Great Performances” concert taped recently in Los Angeles and being broadcast this evening, Fitzgerald, who would have turned 90 on April 25 (she died in 1996), was subject to the same laws of nature as the rest of us. The clips jump around in time, from her frisky days as a bebop scat singer under the spell of Dizzy Gil- lespie, to the mid-1970s. By then that previously perfect sound came with a wobble. Once a big happy- go-lucky gal, she had metamorphosed into a bespectacled pop-jazz librarian gamely soldiering through the American songbook. Here are glimpses of Fitzgerald at different periods with Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lester Young. As happens with many singers over time, her loss of vocal security coincided with a deepening sense of connection with song lyrics.

    Super Regional Championship at San Antonio November 3-4, 2017 The Alamodome San Antonio, TX Adjudicator Biographies National Presenting Sponsor MUSIC PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Marty Griffin, Toms River, NJ Marty Griffin received his undergraduate degree in music at William Paterson University, where he performed with the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble and the New Jersey New Music Ensemble. He also has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Kean University. Marty has been a Band Director in New Jersey for 27 years, and he is currently the Director of Bands and Coordinator of Fine Arts at Monroe Township High School. His responsibilities include directing the Marching Band (16 years), Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble as well as teaching AP Music Theory. The MTHS Marching Band was selected to represent New Jersey at the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor in 2016. Marty performed for five seasons with the Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps and he has been a percussion arranger for high school bands throughout New Jersey since 1987. Marty currently judges for numerous organizations including Winter Guard International (WGI), Bands of America (BOA), and Drum Corps International (DCI). In 2006, Marty was selected to judge for the Drum Corps Japan Championships held in Yokohama, Japan. He is currently the Percussion Caption Head for Drum Corps Associates, as well as judging coordinator for The Mid Atlantic Percussion Society. Jay Kennedy, Holliston, MA Mr. S. Jay Kennedy’s career encompasses varied and successful experiences as a composer, arranger, producer, performer, educator, and administrative leader. He is Vice President for Academic Affairs/Vice Provost at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
