Dave Valentin Dave Valentin Dave Valentin is a multi-Grammy award winning Latin Jazz flutist. He learned Latin percussion. Valentin’s teacher, Hubert Laws, suggested that he not double on saxophone because of his attractive sound on the flute. He studied at the Bronx Community College. He is of Puerto Rican descent. In 1977, he made his recording debut with Ricardo Marrero’s group and he appeared also on a Noel Pointer album. Discovered by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, Valentin was the first artist signed to GRP and he has been a popular attraction ever since. Valentin has recorded over 15 albums, combining the influence of pop, R&B, and Brazilian music with Latin and smooth jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz. In 2000, he appeared in the documentary film, Calle 54, performing with Tito Puente. He toured with El Negro and MioSotis. Since the mid-2000s, Valentin has been signed to Highnote Records releasing World On A String (2005) and Come Fly With Me (2006). He has done several collaborations with pianist Bill O’Connell and was a nominee for the Latin Grammy Awards of 2006. LISA FISCHER BIO Lisa Fischer is a singer who really gets around. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains, and automoBiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not Be on the marquee, But she doesn't care. She's Busy loving every minute of it. It's easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won't let go, the infectious quality of her time feel: these things keep her on top of the list. But it's the sweetness of her smile, her visiBle pleasure in watching her Bandmates do their stuff, her glamorous- girl-next-door quality that make fans all over the world think she's their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on 'Gimme Shelter' has millions of hits). The rest of her resume is pretty impressive too: touring, recording, and music making with Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Alicia Keyes, Lou Reed, Louie Vega, Aretha Franklin, John Scofield, George Benson, Laurie Anderson, Lee Ritenour, Jackie Evancho (and many others). Along with many other top session and backup singers like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Patti Austin, and Judith Hill, "the greatest artists you've never heard of" (but whose voices are instantly recognizable), she's featured in Morgan Neville's acclaimed documentary film Twenty Feet from Stardom, distributed By Miramax in the US and scheduled for European premieres throughout 2013-2014 season.

  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

  • Sammy Figueroa Full
Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Since then, in a career spanning over thirty years, Sammy has played with a

  • Album Reviews
Album Reviews I’ve written over 150 album reviews as a volunteer for CHIRPRadio.org. Here are some examples, in alphabetical order: Caetano Veloso Caetano Veloso (A Little More Blue) Polygram / 1971 Brazilian Caetano Veloso’s third self-titled album was recorded in England while in exile after being branded ‘subversive’ by the Brazilian government. Under colorful plumes of psychedelic folk, these songs are cryptic stories of an outsider and traveller, recalling both the wonder of new lands and the oppressiveness of the old. The whole album is recommended, but gems include the autobiographical “A Little More Blue” with it’s Brazilian jazz acoustic guitar, the airy flute and warm chorus of “London, London” and the somber Baroque folk of “In the Hot Sun of a Christmas Day” tells the story of tragedy told with jazzy baroque undertones of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” The Clash London Calling Epic / 1979 London Calling, considered one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever recorded, is far from a straightforward: punk, reggae, ska, R&B and rockabilly all have tickets to this show of force that’s both pop and revolutionary. The title track opens with a blistering rallying cry of ska guitar and apocalypse. The post-disco “Clampdown” is a template for the next decade, a perfect mix of gloss and message. “The Guns of Brixton” is reggae-punk in that order, with rocksteady riffs and rock drums creating an intense portrait of defiance. “Train in Vain” is a harmonica puffing, Top 40 gem that stands at the crossroads of punk and rock n’ roll.
