‘Reading’ and ‘Translating’ Emotions: Nationalism in Contemporary Greek Cinema by Sophia Sakellis A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Research) Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences University of Sydney October 2016 ABSTRACT This study explores emotions related to nationalism, and their manifestations in contemporary Greek cinema. It also investigates the reasons and mechanisms giving rise to nationalism, and how it is perceived, expressed and ‘translated’ into other cultures. A core focus within the nationalist paradigm is the theme of national identity, with social exclusion ideologies such as racism operating in the background. Two contemporary Greek films have been chosen, which deal with themes of identity, nationalism, xenophobia, anger and fear in different contexts. The study is carried out by drawing on the theories of emotion, language, translation and cinema, to analyse the visual and audio components of the two films and ascertain their translatability to an Australian audience. Both films depict a similar milieu to each other, which is plagued by the lingering nature of all the unresolved political and national issues faced by the Greek nation, in addition to the economic crisis, a severe refugee crisis, and externally imposed policy issues, as well as numerous other social problems stemming from bureaucracy, red tape and widespread state-led corruption, which have resulted in massive rates of unemployment and financial hardship that have befallen a major part of the population. In spite of their topicality, the themes are universal and prevalent in a number of countries to varying degrees, as cultural borders become increasingly integrated, both socially and economically. -

WHITESIDE, JAMES ROBERT, M.F.A. Saudade. (2014) Directed by Professor David R. Roderick. 49 pp. The title of this thesis comes from the Portuguese term, “saudade.” Saudade is more than our English idea of melancholy—it can be thought of as “the love that remains” in an absence. For the purposes of the project, the poems in Saudade explore the relationship between memory, music, and perspective in relationships taking place in a contemporary urban pastoral. Specifically, the poems address relationships—usually romantic—between men. As a gay man, I feel it is especially important to write from my own experiences as a member of such a community. The work in conversation with contemporary poets such as Frank Bidart, Richard Siken, Craig Arnold, and Kathleen Graber, reaching back even to C.P. Cavafy. The poems’ speakers are faced with one of life’s most confounding desires—to know for certain the thoughts and feelings of the beloved. How is shared meaning communicated by two people who are socialized not to speak about their emotions? The poems search for perspective, a safe place where they might access the individual experience or viewpoint of the other. The tension between intense feeling and a lack of ability to communicate with the object of that feeling is central to the poems in Saudade. Some of the work (exemplified by the poem “Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major”) has begun to transcend the “you-I” binary in order to explore the possibilities of the speaker sharing elements of the internal life with a general audience. -

Study I investigated group differences in SCE attributions (the ability to recognize SCEs) and empathic SCEs (the ability/tendency to feel empathic SCEs) and the potentiAl modulAtory role of heightened perspective-tAking (PT) demAnds. Furthermore, Study I explored associAtions between SCE processing, a triAd of sociAl cognitive abilities (self-AwAreness/introspection, perspective-tAking/cognitive empathy, and Affective empathy), and Autistic feAtures. Study II investigated group differences in neural Activation patterns recruited during SCE processing and the potentiAl modulAtory role of heightened PT demAnds. During an MRI scAn, participants completed the Self-Conscious Emotions TAsk (SCET), which feAtured sAlient, ecologicAl video clips of adolescents in a singing competition. Videos represented two factors: emotion (embarrassment, pride) and PT demAnds (low, high). In low PT clips, singers’ emotions mAtched the situational context (singing quality; sing poorly, act embarrassed); in high PT clips, they did not (sing well, act embarrassed). -

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. As soon as President Barack Obama heard about the awful school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, not yet one month ago, he reacted like I can imagine any president would have reacted: he spoke with the governor and promised him every single resource that he would need to investigate the crime, care for the victims, and counsel their families. But the president also did something else. He made a public statement at the White House where he didn’t speak as a president, but as a parent. He said: I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do. The majority of those who died today were children. They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers — men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams. So our hearts are broken today — for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain. -

There was nothing spectacular about this, even if at the time it was considered somewhat different for a young woman to do such a thing and also act as the managing director. However, the spectacular thing was that in forming this company we tried to do so by conforming to rules, regulations and current standards – but there was a lot of hassle on a variety of issues to come to an agreement. In those negotiations we all showed, felt and expressed a good deal of emotions. However, there seemed to be a tacit agreement that those emotions were not to affect our decisions about the structure and running of the business. At least we pretended that this was the case. As a professional consultant within the field of strategic and organisational change, I often came across a great deal of emotions among strategic leaders, managers and other employees. This was even more explicit in different change processes of the companies. Nevertheless, emotions were something one tried to exclude from strategic leadership. -

7 Deadly Sins: Lust In order to organize the way that we go through the 7 deadly sins, we will follow the pattern that Dante gave us in the Purgatory. In the poem, he is being led in a vision through purgatory and he sees it as a vast mountain, near the bottom are the worst sins and near the top the lesser sins. The penitents climb the mountain, leaving sins behind and eventually attaining heaven. We are actually going to go backwards, down the mountain, starting with the lesser sins and working our way to the more grave ones. The sin that, while still deadly, is considered the least, is Lust. Is Lust even a sin? (Obviously we know it is because it is one of the 7 deadly sins, but suspend belief with me for a moment.) It seems as though perhaps it is not a sin. After all, lust is not an action, it is not hurting anybody else, but it is a feeling. Typically, a sin is an action that we willfully carry out. We cannot be judged by what tempts us, after all, Our Lord was tempted in the desert for 40 days and we know that he never sinned. However, Our Lord also says this, “27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus teaches us how to take the law, the rules and precepts of the moral life, and inscribe those rules on our hearts. -

Using a mock-up scenario with three confederates, we examined how the presence of an audience affected physiological and neural responses and the reported emotional experiences of failures and achievements. The results indicated that publicity induced activations in mentalizing areas and failures led to activations in arousal processing systems. -

Revisiting classical aesthetics in the light of recent psychological research, we present a novel model to explain this much discussed (apparent) paradox. We argue that negative emotions are an important resource for the arts in general, rather than a special license for exceptional art forms only. The underlying rationale is that negative emotions have been shown to be particularly powerful in securing attention, intense emotional involvement, and high memorability, and hence is precisely what artworks strive for. Two groups of processing mechanisms are identified that conjointly adopt the particular powers of negative emotions for art’s purposes. -

Emotions are expressed in a limited number of particular facial expressions. These expressions are universal and evolved. Facial expressions of emotion are remarkably brief, typically lasting 1 to 5 s. And germane to the interests of the present article, these brief facial expressions of emotion reveal a great deal about peopleÕs lives. In the present article I will present evidence that supports this last notion ad- vanced by Ekman, that brief expressions of emotion reveal important things about the individualÕs life course. To do so I first theorize about how individual differences in emotion shape the life context. With this reasoning as backdrop, I then review four kinds of evidence that indicate that facial expression is revealing of the life that the individual has led and is likely to continue leading. Individual differences in emotion and the shaping of the life context People, as a function of their personality or psychological disorder, create the sit- uations in which they act (e.g., Buss, 1987). Individuals selectively attend to certain features of complex situations, thus endowing contexts with idiosyncratic meaning. Individuals evoke responses in others, thus shaping the shared, social meaning of the situation. -

Likewise in Dutch ,‟DEAD‟ is dood and “kill” is doden. In Swedish, “DEAD” is dod and „Kill‟ is doda. In English the same process resulted in the word “DEADEN”, where the suffix “EN” means “to cause to be”. We all know that the things which has life is going to be dead in future anytime any moment. So, the sentence we know popularly that “Man is mortal”. The sources of life comes into human body when he/she is in the womb of mother. The active meeting of sperm and eggs, it create a new life in the woman‟s overy, and the woman carried the foetus with 10 months and ten days to given birth of a new born baby . When the baby comes out from the pathway of the vagina of his/her mother, then his/her first cry is depicted that the new born baby is starting to adjustment of of the newly changing environment . For that very first day, the baby‟s survivation is rairtained by his/her primary environment. But the tendency of death is started also. In any time of any space the human baby have to accept death. Not only in the case of human being, but the animals, trees, species, reptailes has also the probability of death. The above mentioned live behind are also survival for the fittest.
