pringtime in Denver means exciting news from the Colorado Symphony: the announcement of all that awaits in the coming concert season. I’m thrilled and honored to present the 2015/16 lineup, which includes music for every taste and background. From traditional Masterworks to Pops and every series in between, the Colorado Symphony offers a range of programming designed to appeal Sto an audience as diverse as our great state. The common theme? Excellence. Have a look through these pages and you’ll see why the Colorado Symphony is recognized as one of the finest and most innovative in the . Guided by the artistic vision of Music Director Andrew Litton and created in collaboration with the ’s musicians, the 2015/16 season explores the breadth, depth, virtuosity, and even playfulness of this exemplary ensemble.

The season starts and finishes with a bang, opening with a bombastic all-Russian Masterworks program in September. In May, we wrap up with an irresistibly rousing performance of Orff’s Carmina burana, with the full Colorado Symphony Chorus and Colorado Children’s Chorale.

The rest of the Masterworks programs are equally exciting, showcasing the talents of both renowned and up-and- coming conductors, composers, and soloists. I’m proud of the profoundly talented Colorado Symphony principal players who will take their turn in the solo spotlight all season long.

It’s a cinematic year for Pops, with some of American film’s most beloved classics performed with full by the orchestra. From Psycho to the music of James Bond, Home Alone to Blazing Saddles, the Symphony at the Movies series is a soundtrack for fun – and a great option for date night. In May, we’ll welcome back some superheroes (and villains) in our third-annual Symphonic Tribute to Comic Con. 1 Opening Weekend: MASTERWORKS Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1 SEPT 18-20 FRI-SAT 7:30 SUN 1:00 Andrew Litton, conductorT T Alessio Bax, piano SHOSTAKOVICH Festive Overture, Op. 96 TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47 Music Director Andrew Litton conducts your Colorado Symphony through an all-Russian slate to start the season with a bang. The weekend also brings Italian-born pianist Alessio Bax to Denver for the first time since the 2010/11 season, with a technique that’s a perfect match for Tchaikovsky’s bold Piano Concerto No. 1. Shostakovich’s triumphant Symphony No. 5 provides an apt finish that is nothing less than a work of high art.

The Music Man In Concert POPS SEPT 26-27 SAT 7:30 SUN 1:00 Colorado SymphonyT Chorus, MaryT Louise Burke, associate director The Colorado Symphony’s self-produced take on the Meredith Willson classic brings River City, Iowa to Denver for two performances. The timeless story of slick con man Harold Hill wooing Marian the Librarian features such showstoppers as “Ya Got Trouble,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” and the signature “76 Trombones.” Hear this classic score the way the composer intended it – with a full symphony orchestra accompanied by an amazing cast of local and national singers and actors.

Mozart Performed By Michael Thornton MASTERWORKS OCT 2-3 FRI-SAT 7:30 James Feddeck,T conductor Michael Thornton, horn DVOŘÁK Carnival Overture MOZART Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat major, K. 447 L. MOZART Sinfonia pastorella for Alphorn BRAHMS Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98 Colorado Symphony Principal Horn Michael Thornton performs works by two Mozarts, beginning with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s well-known Horn Concerto No. 3. Thornton then trades his French horn for an eight-foot alphorn for Sinfonia pastorella by Leopold, Wolfgang’s father. In his Colorado Symphony debut, former Cleveland Orchestra staff conductor James Feddeck opens with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture and rounds out the program with Brahms’ lush Symphony No. 4, the last symphonic work of his career.

Inside The Score: Symphony 101 INSIDE THE SCORE OCT 9 FRI 7:30 CatherineT Beeson, host Assistant Principal Viola and Director of Community and Education Programs Catherine Beeson hosts an informative and entertaining evening that meshes musical performances with a behind- the-scenes peek into the symphony world. For this event, the focus is on debunking myths and explaining the orchestra to newbies and veteran symphony-goers alike. It’s the ultimate entry point into the Colorado Symphony experience.

Jake Shimabukuro In Concert SPECIAL OCT 10 SAT 7:30 Jake Shimabukuro,T ukulele The Hawaiian-born ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro has long been a household name in his native state and Japan, but he exploded into the musical mainstream in 2006 with an assist from a viral YouTube video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that has been seen by more than thirteen million people. Shimabukuro’s performance will include the Colorado debut of Byron Yasui’s Concerto No. 1 for Ukulele.

Elgar “Enigma Variations” MASTERWORKS OCT 16-17 FRI-SAT 7:30 Courtney Lewis,T conductor Courtney Hershey Bress, harp HAYDN Symphony No. 60 in C major, “Il distratto” DEBUSSY Dances Sacred and Profane RAVEL Introduction and Allegro ELGAR Variations on an Original Theme, Op.36 “Enigma Variations” This dazzling program showcases Colorado Symphony Principal Harp Courtney Hershey Bress performing virtuosic masterpieces from Debussy and Ravel. staff conductor Courtney Lewis leads this program culminating in Sir ’s Variations on an Original Theme. Popularly known as “Enigma Variations” the piece consists of 24 variations that each depict one of Elgar’s family members or friends in a musical cryptogram that draws inspiration from lost loves, barking bulldogs, and his toughest critics.

Strauss Conducted By Andrew Litton MASTERWORKS OCT 23-24 FRI-SAT 7:30 Andrew Litton, Tconductor Silver Ainomäe, cello STRAUSS , Op. 35 STRAUSS Don Juan, Op. 20 STRAUSS Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Op. 59 Principal Cello Silver Ainomäe opens this all-Strauss program with Don Quixote for a concert experience that captures the breadth of the composer’s remarkable oeuvre. The modernist Don Juan cemented Strauss’ international reputation, and his comic yet bittersweet Der Rosenkavalier (The Rose-Bearer) remains a staple for opera companies worldwide. For Don Quixote, Ainomäe’s cello plays the titular role of the windmill-battling Man of La Mancha, while the solo viola captures the part of his comic squire, Sancho Panza.

Symphony At The Movies: Psycho POPS OCT 30 FRI 7:30 T For Halloween weekend, the Colorado Symphony performs the soundtrack to Psycho, the film that moved the horror genre from gothic to contemporary. Alfred Hitchcock’s groundbreaking thriller continues to resonate with audiences for its jarring music as much as its haunting images and stunning twists. Composed by Academy Award® winner Bernard Herrmann (whose career spanned from Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane to Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver), this score is one of the most memorable – and frightening – in Hollywood history. The complete film will be shown on large suspended screens for the full Symphony At The Movies experience.

2 3 Halloween Spooktacular FAMILY OCT 31 SAT 2:30 T A family tradition of the not-too-scary sort, this concert features musical fun for the whole family. Everyone is encouraged to dress up for the Halloween festivities, and the Colorado Symphony musicians will trade their tuxes and tails for their own zany costumes.

Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 3 MASTERWORKS NOV 6-8 FRI-SAT 7:30 SUN 1:00 Andrew Litton,T conductor T Denis Kozhukhin, piano KABALEVSKY Overture to Colas Breugnon, Op. 24 PROKOFIEV Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op 16 RACHMANINOFF Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44 Colorado Symphony Music Director Andrew Litton conducts the orchestra through a program of Russian compositions that veer from soaring to subtle. After the overture to Dmitry Kabalevsky’s opera, Colas Breugnon, piano sensation Denis Kozhukhin tackles ’s formidable Piano Concerto No. 2, a piece that rattled audiences with its modernist intensity over a century ago. The orchestra finishes with ’s Symphony No. 3, an inventive piece that juxtaposes delicate beauty with towering grandeur.

Symphony At The Movies: Back To The Future GEEK NOV 14 SAT 7:30 T Power up your DeLorean, recharge your flux capacitor, and get ready to celebrate the 30th anniversary of an unforgettable movie classic: Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox, the 1.21-gigawatt blockbuster that topped the 1985 box office. Fans old and new will experience the thrill of the film like never before: on a big screen with the full orchestra performing Alan Silverstri’s dazzling musical score live—and you don’t even need a time machine to get to 2015!

Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique MASTERWORKS NOV 20-21 FRI-SAT 7:30 Andrew Litton, Tconductor Philippe Quint, violin Colorado Symphony Chorus, Duain Wolfe, director STRAVINSKY Symphony of Psalms STRAVINSKY Violin Concerto in D major BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14 Hector Berlioz’s early Romantic tour-de-force, Symphonie fantastique, headlines this program, telling the bizarre story of an artist in five movements: His love for a young woman sweeps from joy to jealousy into an opium-fueled dream of a witches’ sabbath. The program begins with a pair of inimitable Stravinsky pieces that effortlessly mesh menace and beauty: The Colorado Symphony Chorus sings with the orchestra on his Symphony of Psalms, then violinist Philippe Quint performs Violin Concerto in D major on his 1708 Stradivarius.

The Music Of James Bond With Hilary Kole POPS NOV 28 SAT 7:30 Hilary Kole,T vocalist Vocalist Hilary Kole plays Bond girl as the Colorado Symphony performs the iconic music of James Bond. Monty Norman’s “James Bond Theme” started it all in 1962's Dr. No, the first Bond film, and the sleek, sexy melody continues to seduce in the 24th Bond film, Spectre. The Colorado Symphony will perform works from your favorite films, including Academy Award®-nominated songs such as “Live and Let Die” and “For Your Eyes Only.”

Drums Of The World FAMILY NOV 29 SUN 1:00 Colorado SymphonyT Percussionists This popular annual family concert takes attendees on a musical trip around the globe. Drums of the World features your very own Colorado Symphony percussionists playing rhythmic instruments new and old. It’ll be everything but the kitchen sink!

All Beethoven Featuring Symphony No. 3 "Eroica" MASTERWORKS DEC 4-6 FRI-SAT 7:30 SUN 1:00 Rossen Milanov,T conductor T Andrew Staupe, piano BEETHOVEN Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43 BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, “Eroica” The annual winter tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven opens with the little-played overture to the 1801 ballet, The Creatures of Prometheus. Beethoven’s Classical roots are at the heart of his Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by pianist Andrew Staupe, who cemented his status as one of the country’s top young pianists with a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in 2012. Beethoven’s famed Symphony No. 3, most commonly known as “Eroica,” was groundbreaking for its musical range when it premiered in the early 19th century. Audience-favorite Rossen Milanov returns to conduct this exciting program.

A Colorado Christmas HOLIDAY DEC 11-13 FRI 7:30 SAT 2:30 & 6:00 SUN 1:00 Colorado SymphonyT Chorus, DuainT Wolfe, director T Colorado Children’s Chorale, Deborah DeSantis, artistic director The warm sounds of the holidays fill Boettcher Concert Hall in this annual Christmas spectacular. This season’s celebration focuses on the music and magic of the season, showcasing the Colorado Symphony’s annual collaboration with the Colorado Children’s Chorale and the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will be on hand making a list and checking it twice in preparation for the big night.

Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old boy who’s accidentally left behind when his family leaves for Christmas vacation, and who must defend his home against two bungling thieves (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). Hilarious and heartwarming, Home Alone is holiday fun for the entire family.

This must-see concert features your Colorado Symphony performing the works of American master , accompanied by a quartet of dancers from the famed New York City Ballet on the sultry finale, Who Cares?. The orchestra and Colorado Symphony Music Director Andrew Litton will also perform the jazz-band version of Rhapsody in Blue as well as other highlights from Gershwin’s career that bridged the gaps between Classical, jazz, and popular music. One Singular Sensation: A Tribute To Marvin Hamlisch POPS JAN 23 SAT 7:30 Donna McKechnie,T Jodi Benson, Doug LaBrecque, vocals Colorado Symphony Chorus, Mary Louise Burke, associate director Former Principal Pops Conductor of the Colorado Symphony, the late, great Marvin Hamlisch is an entertainment legend. He’s one of only a dozen people to win an Emmy®, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, and a Tony®, plus he won a Pulitzer and a pair of Golden Globes® to boot. He won three Oscars in 1974 – two for the score for The Way We Were and the third for his adaptation of Scott Joplin for The Sting. Featuring the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, this concert spans Hamlisch’s remarkable career, from his work on Woody Allen films to A Chorus Line to the score for Ordinary People.

Similarly versatile, Colorado Symphony Associate Concertmaster Claude Sim performs Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, which showcases Sim’s boundless energy and flawless technique.

Inside The Score: Holst INSIDE THE SCORE FEB 5 FRI 7:30 This editionT of Inside the Score takes us from Mercury to Neptune with an in-depth look at ’s The Planets. Holst’s suite features seven movements, each dedicated to a different planet in the solar system, capturing the distinct and unique character of each.

Side-By-Side With DYAO: 100 Year Celebration FAMILY Of The U.S. National Parks FEB 6 SAT 2:30 Denver YoungT Artists Orchestra The annual Colorado Symphony and Denver Young Artists Orchestra (DYAO) Side-By-Side concert celebrates 100 years of the U. S. National Parks Service with an exciting program highlighting the beauty of our great land. The DYAO will join the Colorado Symphony on stage for Symphony No. 1: "Formations" by local composer and educator Jeffrey Nytch, along with other Classical favorites.

Sierra Boggess In Concert POPS FEB 13-14 SAT 7:30 SUN 1:00 Sierra Boggess,T vocals T Colorado Children’s Chorale, Deborah DeSantis, artistic director Denver native and Colorado Children’s Chorale alumnus Sierra Boggess is best known for her Broadway debut originating the role of Ariel in the 2007 The Little Mermaid. Boggess has also been a Broadway mainstay for the last decade performing in musicals Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, , and others. It’s easy to hear why: Her enchanting, soaring vocals hit all of the right notes. For this Valentine’s Day weekend concert, Boggess will sing tunes that made her a superstar, accompanied by the orchestra and featuring the Colorado Children’s Chorale.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 is the largest symphony ever made in terms of forces, length, and harmonic boldness and is his most popular and successful work.

Shakespeare Festival: A Midsummer Night’s Dream MASTERWORKS MAR 4-5 FRI-SAT 7:30 Hans Graf, conductorT Maureen Thomas, actor Colorado Children’s Chorale, Deborah DeSantis, artistic director TCHAIKOVSKY The Tempest, Fantasy-Overture, Op. 18 MENDELSSOHN A Midsummer Night’s Dream Commemorating 400 years since the Bard’s passing, the Colorado Symphony’s inaugural Shakespeare Festival weekend celebrates Felix Mendelssohn’s charming and delightful A Midsummer Night’s Dream (which includes the unmistakable "Wedding March") as Maureen Thomas performs passages from the fantastic classic in a one-woman tour-de-force. Conductor Hans Graf leads the orchestra and the Colorado Children’s Chorale in an evening of Shakespeare that effortlessly melds drama and music and promises to ignite your imagination.

Duain Wolfe leads the Colorado Symphony and Chorus in a musical exploration of Shakespeare’s most captivating lines and characters as portrayed in the music of Vaughan Williams, Verdi, Berlioz, and other composers who were caught up in the power of his “music of the spheres.”

8 9 An Evening With SPECIAL MAR 12 SAT 7:30 WonderboundT TCHAIKOVSKY excerpts from Sleeping Beauty TCHAIKOVSKY excerpts from TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48 The Colorado Symphony is excited to welcome Wonderbound to Boettcher Concert Hall for this one-of-a-kind performance. This program will feature excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s masterpieces, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, with original choreography from Wonderbound’s own Garrett

Inside The Score: An Evening Of Chamber Music INSIDE THE SCORE APR 8 FRI 7:30 T Chamber music originated with small-scale orchestras designed to fit in an intimate palace chamber, but its evolution into its contemporary forms would shock the monarchy right out of its bejeweled boots. This evening provides an introduction to and examination of chamber music with both performance and discussion showcasing the musicians of the Colorado Symphony in a new light.

A Symphonic Tribute To Mel Brooks POPS APR 9 SAT 7:30 Colorado TSymphony Chorus, Mary Louise Burke, associate director Mel Brooks needs no introduction. The comedy icon has left an indelible imprint on both film and stage, often with an assist from his longtime musical collaborator, composer John Morris. This symphonic tribute to Brooks brings performances from Morris’ scores of films including Blazing Saddles as well as more recent music from the Broadway adaptations of The Producers and Young Frankenstein.
