To fulfill this goal, DFit.ca prescription offers randomized undulating periodization. The question posed to you is: Do our CAF facilities offer suitable facilities? Let’s take a closer look at the different types of training sessions prescribed through DFit.ca…

Active Recovery: Based on energy levels and the number of purposeful training days, this day allows for stamina building through a continuous training activity such as cycling, hiking, running or cross country skiing. Sports/Leisure: Because sports and leisure activities are part of military culture, this training day can be included as part of the program generation. Physical: Through traditional style muscular strength and cardiovascular interval conditioning, a solid foundation of fitness is developed. Physical training serves as the foundation for all Functional and Operational training sessions. Physical training is well supported by most of our CAF facilities with dumbbells, barbells, pulley cables, treadmills, rowers, spin bikes etc as it was designed with simple equipment in mind rather than machines. Functional: Where fitness components (speed, agility, quickness, power/plyometrics, muscular and cardiovascular) are trained simultaneously to develop a high working capacity as well as some movement preparation (deadlift to press, cleans, thrusters). More recently many of our CAF facilities now include Functional Training areas with opens spaces and more simple/free style equipment like sandbags, skip ropes, plyo boxes, TRX stations and pull up stations. Flexibility/Mobility: Lighter intensity training with the goal of improving mobility/ability to move efficiently though the full range of motion. The efficiency of movement developed here supports good mechanics in all other training days where the movements are loaded and fast, with the intention of reducing injuries. The Functional training space is ideal for Flexibility/Mobility. Operational: Physically demanding tasks are simulated, while respecting operational loads and distances, to ensure skilfulness and to avoid wasted time and effort. These workouts are in the process of being reviewed with the intention of having both simulation workouts and gym versions. For many bases/wings this type of training has not been included in their programming and may not be possible with the current facilities available. The CAF culture has already demonstrated that operational training is important through the provision of confidence /obstacle courses. Ideally similar areas could be set up to support the operational fitness training simulations. It would be reasonable to assume that the different operational environments would have variations of these fitness training areas (founded in the physically demanding tasks specific to each environment as well as the 6 Common Military Tasks (CMTFE) defined as the physical component of the Universality of Service principle) QUESTION: Where and How to do see Operational fitness training happening at your Base/Wing?

During the period of 14 Jun to 03 July 2013 members of the CANSOFCOM Human Performance Research Team conducted Professional Development Sessions for PSP staff at bases across the Canada, including Esquimalt, , Shilo, Petawawa, Valcartier and Gagetown. The purpose of these sessions was to educate staff on the purpose and design of CANSOFCOM Assessment Centres (ACs), as well as the underlying philosophy and science used in the development of the pre-selection physical fitness training programs for both Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) and the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR). In addition each PSP staff member that attended the educational session received 8 professional development credits (PDCs) towards their continuing education requirements for CSEP certifications.

In conjunction with the professional development clinics the CSOR Pre-Selection Physical Fitness Training Program was published in booklet format in order to assist staff in the administration of the program. The CSOR Program has been well received in the field and the scientific process behind its development has been peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research1. As described by Ginger Lamoureux, Fitness Coordiantor at CFB Shilo, “It was a great opportunity to review the academic theory behind the testing and training that candidates are put through when applying to CSOR. The one on one discussion as well as the practical session allowed for a free flowing conversation which was highly useful.” Rebecca Olstad the Fitness Coordinator at CFB Petawawa indicated that “In order for the men and women of the CAF to ensure they are adequately preparing themselves for the rigors of CSOR and JTF2 positions, the Research and Development team have done an exceptional job in putting together a safe, smart specific training regimen. The booklet is easy to follow and allows the member specific training guidelines. It also leaves room for the member and a PSP staff to put a personal touch to the program without going off track. Overall, very well done…another great training aid.” By drawing these linkages between the purpose of AC’s and the PF Training Programs, as well as opening the session up to discussions on the practical applications of the Programs, PSP staff in the field are now better equipped to deliver their programs and ensure that their members arrive at selection with the best probability for success.

Recently commissioned and located at the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment (2 CER) lines, the Chimo Mudder is an 8 km obstacle course consisting of 14 challenging obstacles that include rope climbing, log obstacles, rope bridges, mud pits and culvert crawls. Having previous experience on the course, Shantelle and Necole were asked by Maj Partello, the Officer Commanding November Company, to lead his Company. Upon completion Maj Partello noted that “Shantelle and Necole’s leadership and personal example added to the event. Given that the platoons went in cold with no notice Shantelle and Necole significantly enhanced my overall control of the coy,” “We definitely enjoyed training out there with the guys. It adds to our motivation when we get opportunities to participate in these events alongside the soldiers. It was challenging and fun all at the same time, and we were very thrilled to have been invited by 3 RCR. We were extremely impressed with the course 2 CER constructed; they did an amazing job. You could tell by the detailed obstacles that a lot of planning and work went into the design and building of the entire course. Being on the course with the group was time well spent!”

PSP Collaboration Impresses Canada Company Executives Aaron Grainge, Directing Staff, PSP Training Centre Borden On behalf of CMP, CFB Borden’s Commander BGen Harris hosted the charity event OP Executive Precision Shoot on the 21st of June. The participants consisted of a variety of professional executives ranging from lawyers, accountants and CEO’s, to current and former CAF members. The goal was for them to experience some of the training that CAF members receive, including: firing the C7, the C9, and a 9mm pistol, descending off the Rappel tower, and a Teamwork Challenge on the Obstacle Course. The PSP Training Centre and Borden’s PSP Fitness and Sports Staff collaborated on running the Teamwork Challenge. The Executives were NOT briefed on what to expect in the Teamwork Challenge, other than it would require them to work in 4 person teams. From the moment they stepped off the MLVW, the participants were thrown into a fast paced, highly precise activity resembling what recruits experience on basic training. The teams were compared and scored on their time appreciation, efficiency of movement, and ability to take direction in stressful scenarios. The challenges included (rubber) weapons handling, fire team movement, casualty evacuations, and obstacle navigation. A BBQ followed the event where the participants commented they had gained a greater appreciation for the expectations of a soldier and their responsibilities. The participants, and the Canada Company event organizers, commented on the level of professionalism displayed by the PSP staff making the day a very entertaining, educational and memorable one. The January/February timeframe was a difficult period for PSP with organizational efforts focused on finding cost efficiencies and further reducing operating budgets for FY 13/14. Unfortunately, with a number of national sports scheduled in PSP Manager Jennifer G, FSD Valerie S, Sherilynn B, Mike P and the Apr to Jul 2013 timeframe, the PSP VP PSP Peter Atkinson had no other option but to cancel all CF National Championships scheduled for this period. Fortunately by mid march it was announced that reductions wouldn’t be as far reaching as initially expected and that the CF Sports funding allocation would be spared. Under the direction of the CAF Sports Manager, Jessica Witoslawski - Ottawa HQ, Sherrilynn Branscombe and Mike Pridding - CFB Borden demonstrated tremendous drive and determination to re-establish partnership with both CFB Borden and external partner organizations. Working as a team, they were able to bring back ALL previously cancelled CAF National Championship and successfully hosted 6 major Championships in a 7 week period from of 13 April to 26 May (Basketball M, Volleyball M & W, Badminton, Squash, Swimming and Running). A significant accomplishment which resulted in 500 CAF members and staff participating in 6 National Sports championship that would not have been possible without the perseverance and collaboration of the DFIT National Sport Team! Bravo Zulu to the team and congrats on receiving the Sr VP PSP Award.

Together, they support CAF members as they recover from illness or injury in returning to active duties, and improve their quality of life as quickly and safely as possible through customized exercise, training plans, and access to sports. This service is offered to members under medical referral, on Return to Work Program (RTW) or posted to the Joint Personnel Support Unit (JPSU).
