Hiegert NCAA Championships ~ 145 all-time The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most suc- cessful intercollegiate athletic conference since its establishment in 1938.

The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Cal State Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to Division I.

Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 145 NCAA Championships (98 men, 47 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11), and baseball (10).

CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, eight softball, six track & field, five volleyball, and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Renovation of the facility (originally called the Wellness Activity Center until 2001) was completed in 1998 and included the addition of the sports medicine offices, expansion of the men’s and women’s locker rooms and the addition of coaches office space. The main basketball court fea- tures a newly finished floor and was recently named the Pete Newell Court. Pete has provided support for CSUMB athletics over the years in generous scholarship donations, and CSUMB Athletics is honored to name the court in his name. Otter Sports Center

www.OtterAthletics.com 14 The Otter Backers Join Our Foursome

About the Otter Backers Become an Otter Backer The primary purpose of the Otter Backers is to generate financial support and interest for a comprehensive athletic program consis- tent with other nationally prominent programs. The Otter Backers recognize the value of a successful athletic program to California State University Monterey Bay, its alumni, and friends. The CSUMB athletic department is dedicated to continuing its tradition of excellence in providing student-athletes with the opportunity to excel in both academics and athletics. Otter Backer funds are used primarily to provide athletic scholarships for twelve men and women’s varsity sports. The cost of providing these academic and ath- letic programs has increased dramatically over the past few years. Otter Backer Operation The Otter Backer membership drive is held annually in early spring; however, memberships are accepted throughout the year (July 1st through June 30th of the following year). Pledges may be fulfilled when made, or, if the donor prefers, quarterly or semi-annu- ally. California State University, Monterey Bay employees may also use the convenient payroll deduction for their contribution. The Otter Backers offer its members a pleasant social calendar. A variety of events are offered including post game receptions, an annual golf outing, luncheons with coaches, and other events throughout the year. A small portion of membership contributions is applied toward normal operating expenses of the Foundation to cover necessary costs such as postage, printing, supplies and booster benefits. Membership is open to anyone interested in helping athletes who participate in one or more of the twelve intercollegiate sports at CSUMB. Why Should I Join? By joining the Otter Backer Foundation, you are providing an opportunity for many young men and women to continue their pursuit of athletic and academic excellence. As a donor, you will receive membership benefits and the personal satisfaction of becoming a special part of our “team behind the teams”. For more information please visit us online at: csumb.edu/otterbackers

www.OtterAthletics.com Giving to the Otter Backers 15 Cash Gifts – Provide immediate help to the program. Contributions may be given in any amount and payments can be made in full or in installments. The most popular way of giving is through an unrestricted cash contribution, which grants the athletic department the discretion to use the money where it is needed most, for athletic scholarships. Membership in one of our levels qualifies the donor for athletic related benefits. Donor benefit (all sports pass, team trip, etc.) obviously increases as the size of the donor’s annual gift increases. Otter Back Foundation members have the ability to select their method and time of payment. Matching Gifts – Many companies offer matching gift programs for contributions by their employees. This is an excellent way to double or triple the size of your gift and increases your benefit level. Check with your company’s benefits department for matching gift information and the proper forms to include with your contribution. Planned Gifts – Tax law advantages make gifts of real estate, bequest or memorials, securities, stocks, and life insurance programs a popular and con- venient way to make a substantial contribution to the Otter Backer Foundation. We welcome the opportunity to discuss these options with you. Endowment Gifts – A named scholarship fund is a meaningful and appropriate way to honor a friend, family member or mentor. Endowed scholar- ships can be designed for a particular sport or position. Endowment gifts provide perpetual scholarship support for student-athletes. Donors can be involved in choosing the criteria and naming the scholarship fund. For more information on the endowment program, contact the Otter Backer Foundation at (831) 582-3113. Gifts in Kind – Donating needed goods and services are another way to build the strength of CSUMB athletic programs. Donations of items that normally would have to be purchased produce a savings to the overall athletics budget. Printing services, office supplies, travel services, lodging, catering, and courtesy cars are among the current needs. Tax Advantages – Tax law encourage contributions to higher education, including athletic scholarship funds. You may be able to make a larger gift to the Otter Backer Foundation that you thought possible. Consult your tax advisor to see how tax laws apply to your particular gift. For your purposes the Foundation of CSUMB’s tax ID number is 77-0387459. To reach this end, the Otter Backers host a variety of fundraising events, highlighted by the annual Membership Campaign. As the membership continues to increase, the Foundation also plans to coordinate a Fall BBQ, the President’s Cup Golf Tournament and a Walk for Women’s Athletics as well as hosting pre-game parties at selected athletic events, all in the support of stu- dent-athletes. On behalf of all our student-athletes who benefit, the CSUMB Athletic Department would like to thank the following supporters who are new members of the Otter Backers. AT&T Pebble Beach Charities Support Otter Athletics and Assist in CSUMB’s “Gearing up to Help Community Youth” The California State University, Monterey Bay Athletic Program is the proud recipient of a grant from AT&T Pebble Beach Charities through the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. This grant provides for both operational and scholarship needs for the Otter Athletic Program and serves to support the educational efforts of over 270 student-athletes. In addition, CSU Monterey Bay Athletics features a dynamic program of community outreach, “CSUMB Athletics: Gearing up to Help Community Youth.” This program, also supported by funds provided by AT&T Pebble Beach Charities, provides free sport clinics to area youth ages 8 through 14. The clinics feature CSUMB coaches and athletes providing train- ing on fundamentals, techniques, and strategies for boys and girls. Various sports are offered at varying times throughout the year. “We truly appreciate the support the AT&T Pebble Beach Charities provides CSUMB,” comments Athletic Director Howard Gauthier. “The grants they provide give our student-athletes outstanding educational opportunities while allowing us to give back to the commu- nity through our youth sport programs.” For more information in regards to this program and our summer youth programs, contact CSUMB Athletics at 831-582-3015.
