Current Affairs: June 01-03, 2019 June 01-03, 2019 Modi Union Council of Ministers 2019 list A day after the incoming Union Council of Ministers was sworn in, portfolios were announced on 31st May afternoon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier sent the list of portfolios for his Council of Ministers to President Ram Nath Kovind, after which the same was unveiled. The government announced the portfolios of the Union ministers with BJP President Amit Shah being named home minister, Rajnath Singh defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman finance minister and former foreign secretary S Jaishankar external affairs minister. Govt forms ‘Jal Shakti’ Ministry by merging Water Resources and Drinking Water Ministries A new ‘Jal Shakti’ Ministry, in which the erstwhile ministries of Water Resources and Drinking Water and Sanitation will be merged, has been formed with Gajendra Singh Shekhawat at its helm. Shekhawat took charge of the ministry on 31st May, a day after he was sworn in as minister. The ambit of the Ministry will encompass issues ranging from international and inter-states water disputes, the Namami Gange project, the flagship initiative to clean the Ganges, its tributaries and sub- tributaries and provide clean drinking water. Cabinet approves extension of PM-KISAN scheme to all farmers In the first Cabinet meeting, the government approved a proposal to extend the benefit of Rs 6,000 per year under the PM-KISAN scheme to all farmers in the country. The decision was taken in the first Cabinet meeting of the new NDA government, which came back to power, winning over 350 seats. In its manifesto for 2019 general elections, the BJP had promised to extend the scheme to all farmers. https://examprep.talentsprint.com 2 Current Affairs: June 01-03, 2019 Cabinet approves pension scheme for small shopkeepers, retail traders The newly-inducted Union Cabinet, in its first meeting, approved a new scheme which assures minimum monthly pension of Rs. 3000 per month to small shopkeepers, retail traders and the self-employed people after attaining the age of 60 years. This is being done as part of the Modi government’s efforts to offer universal social security. Hailing this as a landmark step, Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General, Confederation of All India Traders, said this had been one of the key demands of the trading community. Mohana Singh becomes first woman fighter pilot to fly Hawk jet Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh has become the first woman fighter pilot to fly by day a Hawk advanced jet aircraft. She achieved the feat at the Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal. She has a total of over 500 hours of incident-free flying, of which 380 hours are on the Hawk Mk 132 jet. The mobile app was launched ahead of International Yoga Day on June 21. According to a senior official of the AYUSH ministry, yoga locator is a map-based location app which will also enable yoga instructors to register themselves and reach out to a large number of people. According to earnings statements of the listed companies, Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) reported a 34 percent jump in its 2018-19 fiscal net profit to Rs 26,716 crore. In comparison, IOC registered a net profit of Rs 17,274 crore for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019. India's GDP growth forecast at 7.1% for FY20, reveals FICCI survey The country's median GDP is forecast at 7.1 percent for FY20 and 7.2 percent for FY 21, according to a survey. The industry body FICCI's economic outlook survey said the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.8 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively, for 2019-20. The survey was conducted in May 2019 among economists belonging to the industry, banking and financial services sectors. Inflation is expected to remain moderate and the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rate is projected at 3.1 percent in 2019-20, with a minimum and maximum range of 2.1 percent and 4 percent, respectively. While, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has a median forecast of 4 percent for 2019-20, with a minimum and maximum range of 3.5 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively. https://examprep.talentsprint.com 5 Current Affairs: June 01-03, 2019 ISRO, IIT Guwahati Partner to Help India Achieve Higher Milestones in Space Technology ISRO and IIT Guwahati have partnered and inaugurated the seventh Space Technology Cell (STC) in India to encourage research in space technology, space science and space applications. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the seventh Space Technology Cell (STC) in the series was signed by Professor Goutham Biswas, Director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati and Dr P V Venkitakrishnan, Director, Capacity Building Programme Office (CBPO), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Head Quarters, on 24 May 2019 at IIT Guwahati, said a statement released by ISRO. The meeting was attended by the party's 52 newly elected Lok Sabha MPs and Rajya Sabha members, besides members of the Congress Working Committee and other senior leaders. Gandhi, who represents Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli in Lok Sabha, is the chairperson of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). The World Health Organization has selected the Rajasthan government’s Medical & Health Department for its award this year in recognition of its achievements in the field of tobacco control. The department’s Additional Chief Secretary, Rohit Kumar Singh, received the award at a function to mark World No Tobacco Day in New Delhi on 30th May. The Health Department of the State is the only government body in the country which will be awarded for its tobacco-free initiatives.
