Despite its importance, there seems to have been a limited amount of research conducted on the behavioural aspects of the construction industry. Moreover, the texts that are available on the management of organizations and people in construction are also limited. The aim of this book is therefore to fill this important gap by applying general principles of management specifically to the construction industry. The idea of writing the first edition of this book grew out of my belief that people are the heart of any successful organization and can be regarded as the building blocks of its structure. Throughout my career as a project manager and as a lecturer in construction management I became convinced that practitioners, as well as construction students, needed a book that could offer an applied approach to people and organizational management in order to help them understand human and organizational behaviour as well as to assist in the search for the most appropriate ways of improving organizational performance and effectiveness. In this book, this will be achieved through the study of the management concepts and theories and the application of these concepts and theories in construction-related case studies. It is the blending of theory with practice that is at the heart of good management of people and organization and the study of the subject should reflect that experiential learning, as in the case studies and examples presented in this book. The key issues which will be discussed in this book are evolution of management theories, environmental forces and strategy, organization structure, work groups, organizational culture, leadership, motivation and personnel management. In this second edition the text retains the same underlying aims and learning outcomes that have been the hallmark of the success of the book. There has been a review of the content between and within chapters. A review of the literature on TQM and exploratory researchwithin the industry verified the need for researchinto this area. Through the study, the attitudes of individuals within companies are examined in order to establish current trends towards implementation of Total Quality Management. The primary sources of data was derived from the literature search. Phase one of the study involved data collection from 92 construction companies experiencedin Quality Managementor Total Quality Managementimplementation. Exploratory field work was undertaken to determine levels of adaptations and the relevanceand importance given to TQM in current strategicthinking. Data gathering techniques included a postal questionnaire and an analysis of company financial reporting. Analysis of the data led to the developmentof ftirther researchinstruments to analyseand measure TQM andperformance. Six organisationswere subsequentlyselected and assessedinvolving an in depth case study. The principle findings from the case studies were then validated by further survey, which involved a larger representativesample. The researchindicated that TQM is not yet well establishedas an overall philosophy within the constructionindustry in the UK. The leadingorganisations have 3 to 5 years experienceof implementation,and are assessedas low to medium adapters when measuredagainst the EuropeanQuality Award Model. Some evidencewas found to show that the leading organisationsin TQM had achieved improved performanceagainst the industry.

Conclusions and recommendations 19 Appendix 21 1| Architecture, Building & Construction Records Survey Executive summary The Architecture, Building and Construction Records Survey was conducted in partnership between the Business Archives Council and The National Archives to establish the nature and location of collections of records produced by architectural practices and construction firms in England and Wales which had not been deposited. Such businesses make a major contribution to the British economy, yet their archives are not generally well known or understood. These historical records are important sources for a range of academics and other researchers, as well as offering practical benefits to those working within the architectural and construction sectors. The focus of this survey was on collections which remain with their creators, as opposed to having been deposited in archival repositories, and as such the accessibility of these records to researchers varies across the sector.

    The works brass band – a historical directory of the industrial and corporate patronage and sponsorship of brass bands Gavin Holman, January 2020 Preston Corporation Tramways Band, c. 1910 From the earliest days of brass bands in the British Isles, they have been supported at various times and to differing extents by businesses and their owners. In some cases this support has been purely philanthropic, but there was usually a quid pro quo involved where the sponsor received benefits – e.g. advertising, income from band engagements, entertainment for business events, a “worthwhile” pastime for their employees, corporate public relations and brand awareness - who would have heard of John Foster’s Mills outside of the Bradford area if it wasn’t for the Black Dyke Band? One major sponsor and supporter of brass bands, particularly in the second half of the 19th century, was the British Army, through the Volunteer movement, with upwards of 500 bands being associated with the Volunteers at some time – a more accurate estimate of these numbers awaits some further analysis. However, I exclude these bands from this paper, to concentrate on the commercial bodies that supported brass bands. I am also excluding social, civic, religious, educational and political organisations’ sponsorship or support. In some cases it is difficult to determine whether a band, composed of workers from a particular company or industry was supported by the business or not. The “workmen’s band” was often a separate entity, supported by a local trade union or other organisation. For the purposes of this review I will be including them unless there is specific reference to a trade union or other social organisation.
