Considerada uma das poetisas mais importantes de Portugal, destaca-se pela sua obra carregada de feminismo, simbolismo, sentimento e crítica social relativamente ao papel da Mulher portuguesa do início do século XX. Através da ilustração conceptual, são representados visualmente os seus poemas. Um livro ilustrado e o diagrama cronológico da vida e obra de Florbela Espanca têm o objetivo de reconhecer, valorizar e engrandecer a sua obra. Conclui-se que para a concretização de um projeto ilustrativo existem diversos passos que devem ser implementados, desde a criação de ideias até à representação visual, através de um processo conceptual, da linguagem visual, a técnica e a produção. Além disto, demonstra-se como é possível integrar uma causa social através da poesia ilustrada, proporcionando um enriquecimento visual da obra da poetisa. 11 12 Key-words Illustration; Florbela Espanca; Poetry; Symbolism; Feminism; Feelings; Visual Culture Abstract The achievement of this project consists in establishing a relation between text and image, in the literary work Livro de Mágoas, by Florbela Espanca. Considered one of Portugal's most important poets, she stands out for her work loaded with feminism, symbolism, feelings and social criticism in the role of Women of the early twentieth centur in Portugal. Through conceptual illustration, her poems are visually represented, through an illustrated book and a chronological diagram of the life and work of Florbela Espanca, with the purpose of recognizing, enriching, and enhancing her work. It is concluded that, for the accomplishment of an illustration project, there are several steps that must be implemented, from the creation of ideas to the visual representation through a conceptual process, visual language, technique and production.     Abstracts for the Annual SECAC Meeting in Columbus, Ohio October 25th-28th, 2017 Conference Chair, Aaron Petten, Columbus College of Art & Design Emma Abercrombie, SCAD Savannah The Millennial and the Millennial Female: Amalia Ulman and ORLAN This paper focuses on Amalia Ulman’s digital performance Excellences and Perfections and places it within the theoretical framework of ORLAN’s surgical performance series The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan. Ulman’s performance occurred over a twenty-one week period on the artist’s Instagram page. She posted a total of 184 photographs over twenty-one weeks. When viewed in their entirety and in relation to one another, the photographs reveal a narrative that can be separated into three distinct episodes in which Ulman performs three different female Instagram archetypes through the use of selfies and common Instagram image tropes. This paper pushes beyond the casual connection that has been suggested, but not explored, by art historians between the two artists and takes the comparison to task. Issues of postmodern identity are explored as they relate to the Internet culture of the 1990s when ORLAN began her surgery series and within the digital landscape of the Web 2.0 age that Ulman works in, where Instagram is the site of her performance and the selfie is a medium of choice. Abercrombie situates Ulman’s “image-body” performance within the critical framework of feminist performance practice, using the postmodern performance of ORLAN as a point of departure. J.   • Illustration
    ILLUSTRATION FACILITIES & STUDIO SPACE The Illustration Department offers an array of top quality facilities to create and exhibit student artwork. We provide three Cintiq labs solely for Illustration, access to three 24-hour Cintiq labs, painting and drawing studios, and a laptop for every student that is fully equipped with the latest Adobe Creative Suite software. The Illustration building, located centrally on campus, also houses its own gallery and several exhibition spaces to showcase the work of Illustration students, faculty, and alumni. The annual Illustration show, Illest of the Ill, is a department juried exhibition that is curated and coordinated entirely by students. SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS To date, Ringling College students have won more awards in the 40-year history of the Society of Illustrators than any other college, and comprise the highest number of accepted entries into the Society’s annual Student Scholarship Competition. About 300 works are chosen from more than 8,700 entries submitted by professors of college-level students nationwide. A competition which can kick start a career, the Student Scholarship Competition challenges students to bring their most sophisticated, well-crafted, and original work to be tested by a jury of professional peers, including illustrators and art directors, that selects the most outstanding works created throughout the year. The Illustration curriculum is designed to be broad-based, providing students with multiple skills enabling them to pursue a variety of professional avenues. Our program offers 2 tracks: General Illustration and VISITING ARTISTS & COMPANIES Illustration for Visual Development. All students take general illustration ANITA KUNZ GLENN VILPPU courses (including first year foundations courses) in year 1 & 2.
