Let us think of an area of growth and make a commitment to stick with it. Maybe we can come to a daily Mass once a week, maybe we can commit to reconciliation once a month, maybe we can spend time in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel before or after Mass, maybe we can volunteer at Saint Vincent de Paul, or maybe we can read the Gospels this year. It is time for us to try something new, it is time to grow in our faith. May God continue to bless you and your family in 2020. Fascinated by the art of Improvisation since a child, David also frequently performs improvisations to silent films such as Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Nosferatu, Jeanne d'Arc, Metropolis, as well as a variety of Charlie Chaplin films. At the age of 17, David obtained his FRCO (Fellow of the Royal College of Organists) diploma, winning all the prizes and the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

I have learned and experi- enced so much. At the end of the Summer, I will return to St. John’s Seminary to continue my formation to the priesthood, returning here to Topsfield and Middleton once or twice a week during the academic year. Next summer, I will be able to be with you for the whole summer as a Deacon, and then for the following year in my final year of preparation for Priesthood. To travel from the seminary to Topsfield and Middleton takes approximately one hour, but I do not yet have a car. I write this as an appeal to ask if you may have a car you are getting rid of or selling, or know someone who is, if you could please let me know. This will enable me to commute on a weekly basis from the seminary to our parishes as part of my training for Priesthood, and to have transportation between our two parishes when I am here.     Saints Related to Young People Thomas Aquinas—Academics Thomas was a gentle teacher who believed faith and reason when used wisely would enable all humanity to know and love God as the angels. He studied in Paris from 1245-1248 under Saint Albert the Great, then accompanied Albertus to Cologne. Here he received the nickname “dumb ox,” though he is now considered a Doctor of the Church, and one of the most intelligent philosophers of all time. This dancing developed almost into a mania, and was confused with chorea, the nervous condition later known as Saint Vitus' Dance, the saint being invoked against it.     St. Agnes of Rome Commemorated on January 21 The holy Virgin Martyr Agnes was born in Rome during the third century. Her parents were Christians, and they raised her in the Christian Faith. From her youth she devoted herself to God, and dedicated herself to a life of virginity, refusing all other suitors. When she refused to enter into marriage with the son of a city official, one of his associates revealed to him that Agnes was a Christian. The wicked official decided to shame the holy virgin, and ordered that she be stripped and sent to a brothel for disdaining the pagan gods. But the Lord would not permit the saint to suffer. As soon as she was disrobed, long thick hair grew from her head covering her body. An angel was also appointed to guard her. Standing at the door of the brothel, the angel shone with a heavenly light which blinded anyone who came near the holy virgin. The son of the official also sought to defile the virgin, but fell down dead before he could touch her. Through the fervent prayer of St. Agnes, he was restored to life. Before his father and many other people he proclaimed, “There is one God in the heavens and on earth: the Christian God, and the other gods are but dust and ashes!â€​ After seeing this miracle, 160 men believed in God and were baptized, and then suffered martyrdom. At the demand of the pagan priests, St. Agnes was given over to torture. They tried to burn her as a witch, but the saint remained unharmed in the fire, praying to God.

    GENEALOGY OF NIHILISM Nihilism is the logic of nothing as something, which claims that Nothing Is. Its unmaking of things, and its forming of formless things, strain the fundamental terms of existence: what it is to be, to know, to be known. But nihilism, the antithesis of God, is also like theology. Where nihilism creates nothingness, condenses it to substance, God also makes nothingness creative. Negotiating the borders of spirit and substance, theology can ask the questions of nihilism that other disciplines do not ask: Where is it? What is it made of? Why is it so destructive? How can it be made holy, or overcome? Genealogy of Nihilism rereads Western history in the light of nihilistic logic, which pervades two millennia of Western thought and is coming to fruition in our present age in a virulently dangerous manner. From Parmenides to Alain Badiou, via Plotinus, Avicenna, Duns Scotus, Ockham, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Sartre, Lacan, Deleuze and Derrida, a genealogy of nothingness can be witnessed in development, with devastating consequences for the way we live. As a dualistic logic, nihilism has come to ground existence not in life but in the absences beyond it. We who are, are no longer the living, but rather the living dead; in the death-wielding modern approach to knowledge, we are all reduced to cadavers. The Trinitarian theology of Genealogy of Nihilism offers a counterargument that is sustained by nihilism even as it defeats it. In Christ’s ontological synthesis of divine spirit and incarnation, and in the miraculous logic of the resurrection, theology reunites presence with absence, non-being with being.
