GOVERNANCE

1. MAJOR PROGRAMS

The programme planning in the SNPET is participatory. Sanjan Nagar Public Education Trust is currently involved in the running of a High in the suburbs of Lahore. It has now progressed to senior level (class Nursery-XII) with a current enrolment of 545 students. Formal education is inclusive of all creative arts, emerging technologies, karate, girl guiding & cricket. All students are provided with milk every day.

Three programs are currently offered at the School Premises:

1. Regular Secondary School – Morning Shift – Girls Only

2. Afternoon Shift Primary School – Mixed

3. Higher Secondary School/College for FA. FSC – Girls Only

2. BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees held four meetings in 2008-09 and continued to provide effective governance and support to all activities. The Trustees review and approve overall matters and the programmes undertaken.

The Education Committee, which comprises of six members, including Principal, plays its important role in overseeing affairs of the School. EC meetings highlighted a variety of topics including academic performance, results and follow-up, effective school management, and the nurturing of SNPET spirit.

All financial matters and expenditures were reviewed on quarterly basis. All the matters were also discussed with the Education Committee which was being followed to a large extent in staff recruitment.

Trust office made sure that all expenditures were duly documented and recorded according to the laid down policy and procedure and corresponded to approved budgetary allocation.

All stakeholders including Trustees, employees, teachers, parents and students were involved at various stages of programme/ project design, development and implementation.

Most Trustees regularly visited the school and very actively involved in programme delivery.

SNPET School has a monitoring system for the effective monitoring of its teachers and to ensure quality of education provided at its school. For the purpose the Trust has also devised specific, measurable and objectively verifiable indicators to assess and monitor the progress and output of its School. The results obtained from monitoring are fed back for bringing improvement in programme delivery.

Parents at SNPETHSS were being involved in various community awareness workshops and meetings conducted by external facilitators and Trustees, on various areas of personal and social well-being.

SNPET offers learning experiences that match the fertile minds of the young. SNPET is striving to provide an alternative educational system for intensive capability enhancement and intellectual growth with the objective of developing and heightening the understanding of one’s role in life.

SCHOOL PROGRESS (AUGUST 2008‐MAY 2009)

ADMISSION AND PLACEMENTS

Admission for Session 2008-2009 in class nursery

21-Apr-2008: Annual Admission process started for Session 2008-2009 in April. A large number of parents from near vicinity appeared for registering their children and submitted application forms. After conducting the interviews, the survey was done for selected applicants. The final enrollment list was pasted in June. Total 60 new students were admitted. Admission started for 2009-2010

May 1, 2009: Annual admission started for 2009-2010 for Morning and evening sessions in Nursery classes. New admissions were taken in class nursery. 61 students were admitted for morning & evening shift. Commencement of new I.Com Group for Grade XI

15th September 2008: This year new I.Com group was introduced for Grade XI. The objective of new group is to provide expanded learning opportunities to the students in different areas of education. Sanjan Nagar Alumni Placements

Sanjan Nagar students are achieving milestones in their journey of acquiring quality education. The year 2008-09 has been very successful in this regard. Following are the achievements of the Sanjan Nagar students:

PEF Quarterly Tests

November 21 2008: PEF team conducted quarterly tests of the students for class seven, eight and nine and the students showed remarkable performance.

WORKSHOPS/TRAININGS (IN AND OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL)

Continuous need analysis and assessment has helps Sanjan Nagar in identifying training areas other than the conventional teacher’s training programs.

The school stands out with bold approaches to creativity in arts, , drama and Theatre productions. Similarly critical thinking skills among the teacher and students as well as enhancing skills for ICT integrated learning to expand capabilities of the learners and faculty jointly have been greatly encouraged as a result of the UWI Citifoundation Grant.

A focused approach to quality education without compromising teachers’ continuous professional development has been producing good outcomes in terms of students’ learning and achievement.

Professional development of the individuals is a continuous phenomenon which needs to be catered vigilantly. Training process is always interlinked and goes step by step, based on the previous learning levels. A dedicated team of professional development trainers is working exclusively with the school to improve learning outcomes.

PEF Teachers Training

21-Apr-2008: Two SNPETHSS Science teachers attended a Six-Day Teachers Training workshop on the Science subjects. Punjab Education Foundation organized the training at the Punjab University New Campus. PEF workshop on Leadership & Professional Development

30th-May-2008: A workshop on ‘Leadership & Professional Development’ was held in SNPETHSS by Punjab Education Foundation for two days. Principals, Vice Principals & Coordinators from different schools participated in workshop. It was very prolific workshop to enhance the leadership qualities and school management skills.

Workshop on USIP Project

4th-June-2008: A two day Workshop was conducted by ITA on USIP project at SNPETHSS. Students from Beacon House School, SNPETHSS & Paisa Akhbar participated in it. Different activities were performed in workshop e.g. dialogue discussion, poster making, searching through Internet and group presentation.

Capacity Building Workshop by Faisal Qursehi

7th-June-2008: An exclusive workshop based on ‘Capacity Building’ was conducted by Faisal Qureshi who is an entrepreneur, the founder of two successful technology companies, the guiding force behind many successful leaders & a renowned media personality.

Professional Development Workshop

18th to 24th August, 2008: Professional Development Workshop was conducted by Institute of Professional development at SNPETHSS. The workshop was based on the theme of “Addressing Quality Learning for Quality Skills” and was conducted in three sessions.

• The first 3 days session was conducted by Ms. Ayesha Fazlur Rahman on Classroom Management and Pedagogical Skills.

• The second 2 days session of the workshop was conducted by Ms. Shahzina Siddiqui. She introduced new National Curriculum which was designed for all Education Boards.

• The third 2 days session was conducted by Mr. Abbas Husain on Development of English & Teaching Skills for Teachers.

Certificates were awarded to all the participants and Dr. Baela Raza concluded the session on positive note and expressed her gratitude for all the participants.

World Teachers Day Seminar

7th October, 2008: IT Teacher Mr. Zulfiqar Ali and English Teacher Mr. Saimon attended a forum on World Teachers Day. The seminar was presided by Ms. Baela Raza Jamil. Chief Secretary Punjab was invited as chief guest.

The main focused areas of the seminar were:

• Importance of the teacher in the society

• Teacher’s Trainings

• Teacher’s Institution for learning teaching

• Platform for the Teachers.

Early Childhood Workshop

8th October, 2008: Ms Misbah Rani (Evening School Coordinator) conducted two days Teachers Training Workshop on National Curriculum for Early Childhood Education 2007. The workshop was organized by ITA under the collaboration of Uniliver.

Workshop on Respect of Diversity

13th October, 2008: A five days workshop on ‘Reclaiming Culture and Social Diversity’ for the purpose of mobilizing youth for national harmony and peace held at Sanjan Nagar school. Many secondary school teachers including five SNPETHSS teachers participated in this workshop. The workshop was organized by ITA and was facilitated by Ms. Razia Mughal and Ms. Huma Sikandar.

Term Planning Workshop- By the Principal and Coordinator

January 3rd 2009: Principal Ms. Faiza Shahrukh and coordinator Ms. Naseem conducted a teachers training on SWOT analysis and term planning.

Global School Partnership Program

March 5, 2009: IT teacher Mr. Zulfiqar Ali attended a day-long DFID Global School Partnerships workshop organized by British Council in . The DFID Global School Partnership provides advice, guidance, professional development opportunities and grants to school partnership between schools in the UK and schools in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Sanjan Nagar teachers and students are going to participate in this program.

Inhouse Workshop on ‘Teaching Learning Skills’

March 31, 2009: A workshop was conducted by Mr. Saood-ul-Hassan (Coordinator) & Ms. Fareeha Shahid (Science Teacher) of SNPETHSS for all (Junior & Senior) Teachers. Following topics were focused during workshop:

• Research based Teaching

• Why Teachers burnout (With exercise based activities)

• Seven basic techniques of good teaching

• Tips of Science Lab. Handling (For Teachers)

Intel Workshop

April, 13th 2009: A six days workshop was conducted by Ms. Saima Shauket. Government school teachers from surroundings and two teachers from SNPET HSS participated in the workshop. Ms Nasira Gardezi, head of Intel Program for Lahore district also visited the workshop and had views of the participants during their practical session here at SNPET School.

Theatre and Drama Workshop

June 6, 2009: Ms. Huma Safdar, a highly acclaimed theatre resource person conducted a workshop on theatre and drama with summer camp school students and teachers. She will be conducting similar workshops on Saturdays, helping towards the annual play.

English Learning and Teaching Skills Workshop

June 20, 2009: Ms. Ayesha Fazal conducted a five days teacher workshop on English Learning and Teaching Skills. The workshop was organized by IPL (Institute of Professional Learning). All subject as well as class teachers attended this fruitful session.

Training Workshop

July 3rd 2009: Ms. Freeha, Ms. Farzana and Ms. Naseem attended a Three Days workshop on the “Human Rights” conducted by Simorgh at . The objective of the training was to create awareness about human rights and to enhance descriptive skills in teachers.

AKU Workshop on Paper Construction

July 22nd, 2009: Senior School Science teachers Mr. Fiaz, Mr. Babar, Ms Farzana and Ms Fareeha attended a two-day Teacher Training workshop on paper construction. The workshop was conducted by AKU at La-salle School System. This session was really fruitful especially for the new teachers to understand the AKU style of exam papers.

SOME NEW INITIATIVES

Short Courses in Summer Vacations

2nd June to 17th July, 2008: I.T. & Spoken English Courses were offered by SNPETHSS for Matric & Intermediate students under the supervision of Mr. Saood-ul-Hassan. Students from outside as well as grade XI students from SNPETHSS (free of cost for SNPETHSS students) got admission in these courses. The main purpose of these courses was to upgrade I.T. skills and English language proficiency in students. A cordial certification ceremony was organized at the end of courses.

A Readathon Week (World Literacy Day)

8th to 13th September 2008: Readathon Week was organized at SNPETHSS to enlighten the importance of extensive reading among students and teachers as well. Readathon Week was really an innovative initiative. This was the first time we tried this kind of literary activity at Sanjan Nagar School. Activities of Readathon Week were as follow:

• Oxford University Press books stall

• Extensive reading in Class Rooms & Library

• Alif Laila Book Bus was arranged by school for book reading.

• Internet browsing/surfing was done by the students to know the importance of literacy day.

• ‘WRITE ON’ Project of i-Earn to develop the art of writing.

• Book Bond Project to develop reading habits among junior students with the help of senior students.

• Declamation Contest

CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMETS

Construction of HSS Block

20th July 2008: Construction of building for separate HSSC block was started. Initially it was decided to build a separate Higher Secondary School Block with only six rooms.. The purpose of this building is to provide separate educational environment for college students of Grades XI & XII and to shift them in morning shift.

Extension of Science Laboratory and Construction of Stage in the Play Ground

August & September 2008: Science Laboratory was extended to provide maximum space to the students for practical for grade 9th & 10th.

Stage was constructed in play ground to perform different activities of the school throughout the year e.g. Assembly, Annual Play & sports day etc.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Poster competition

10th-June-2008: A poster competition was organized in Islamabad. Two students Zeemal Pervaiz & Esha Khan from SNPETHSS won the 1st prize.

World Hand Wash Day celebration

15th October, 2008: World Hand wash day was celebrated in the school. Students presented different plays/skits in the morning assembly to highlight the importance of hand washing and cleanliness. The Unilever Company also arranged a presentation and drama in the school to emphasize the importance of hand washing and hygiene. Different TV channels reporters were there to capture this event.

Painting Competition

31st October, 2008: Painting Competition won by 7th Grade students of SNPETHSS. The theme of the painting competition was ‘Say No to Violence’. It was organized by Children’s Peace Museum.

Annual Play November 2008

15 November, 2008: Annual Play 2008 was successfully held at the SNPETHSS. Ms. Madiha Gohar was invited as chief guest and special guests included SNPETHSS Trustees.

Social and religious problems of our society were highlighted through different dramas/skits/Plays and musical activities by the students.

Madam Baela Jamil and Ms Madiha Gohar expressed their views about the whole event and praised the hardworking of the students and teachers. She also showed her interest and willingness in working with Sanjan Nagar Girls in future.

Water Purification Day

December 3, 2008: Pur Water Company organized a presentation to stress the importance of purified water for a good health. They showed mini cartoon movie insisting students to use purified water by boiling or using purification chemicals to make water free.

Commencement of College Block

February 4, 2009: The new higher school block of Sanjan Nagar Higher Secondary School has been duly inaugurated and opened for collage students. As another step towards enabling our future, The College students were given the chance to inaugurate their college block themselves. Students were very happy at given the opportunity and honor. February 4, 2009: Coca Cola Team Visited Sanjan Nagar School. Mr. Moeen Afzal, Chairman SNPET and other board of trustees were also present at the occasion. They had visit to all classes including library, science and computer labs and Art room. The school principal briefed them about curricular and co-curricular activities of the students. They praised students and teachers. They took special interest in nursery class activities. Coca cola personnel were deeply impressed with the dedication of teachers and talent of the students. Annual Sports Day 2008

February 21, 2009: 8th Annual Sports Day of SNPET School was organized at the school campus. Mr. Raja Zafar Secretary for Chief Minister’s Task force Punjab for Education was the chief guest.. Students of all classes took part in different events of sports. A large number of visitors, guests and parents were there to enjoy and encourage the students. Evening class song on Child Labor and Class five, six’s aerobic display were among main areas of interest for spectators. This sports day’s was won by Hima house.

At the end, the chief guest had a round of the whole school and expressed his views to Duniya TV channel team following by refreshment with school teachers.

Open House Day – I Love Earth

April 25, 2009: Annual Open House Day of the school was held. The chief guest for this year’s Open House was Dr. Bernadette Louise Dean, Principal Kinnaird College. Dr. Baela Jamil, managing trustee of SNPET accompanied her.

All projects were based on the Environment theme, being celebrated this year. The whole project was part of the “Peep into the Future” Project.

The topics were selected according to the level of the class and contents of the syllabus. Different models and presentations were made by students. The objectives of the Open house day were.

• Pass on community, awareness about environmental issues through school youth.

• Prepare and sensitize students for the upcoming Environmental challenges in their very country (being a part of global flat word)

Alif Laila Book Bus Society Team Visit to SNPETHSS

July 8, 2009: Alif Laila Book Bus Society team (2 coordinators and 6 internees) visited SNPET to have multi activity session with students. The team came in the “Mobile Bus Library”. The maker who secured 21 A’s in A level; also accompanied the team and participated in the activities with students. The students enjoyed time with them and participated in Art/Craft work,

Puppet Show and Story telling. The big colorful bus with different stories, cozy places and playing areas really fascinated the students. The session concluded with the distribution of small nicely wrapped gifts by Ali Moeen and the Alif Laila team to all the students.

All the visitors also wrote their comments in the “School Guest Book” at tea.

Sanjan Nagar Alumni Forum (SNAF) Initiated 9-Jul-2009 The first session of Sanjan Nagar Alumni Forum SNAF was held at the school campus. The main objective of starting this forum is to bring the old students together and to strengthen the students’ network. Ms. Saima Shaukat and Ms. Sahar conducted the session and shared future programs with the students. This forum will help students in getting back to their alma mater and to be connected with the happenings of the campus. Old students are really excited and look forward to participate in various activities of the Forum.

Parents Teachers Meeting

10-May-2008: A parents teachers meeting was held in SNPETHSS by school administration. Many educational & general issues were raised by parents which were responded and addressed by the Principal, Coordinators. Parents council and transport committee were formed to solve multifarious problems. The main objective of this meeting was to strengthen the triangle of parents, teachers & students.

Unilever Art Project

1-Mar-2008: Like every year, school participated in the Unilever Art Project. The topic for this year artwork was “Beauty and Difference”. All school students participated in this project and six students from senior sections were short listed and got certificates. The artwork was composed of drawings, models and a mural composed of many panels made by classes from nursery to ten.

VISITS ABROAD

Return of SNPETHSS student from USA

15th-June-2008: SNPETHSS student Warda Shakoor returned from USA. Her stay was in USA was from 7th August 2007 to 15th June 2008 for one year through i-Earn international community in YES program. The highlights of her stay were:

She observed US culture & society very closely with their positive & negative aspects.

Educational visit of SNPETHSS Teacher to USA

28th-Jun-2008: Mr. Saimon Robin (Junior English teacher) was selected to visit Plymouth State University, USA. His departure was on June 28, 2008 for one month. Every year, US Department of Education and arrange an educational visit of around 40 teachers from allover Pakistan.

YES Students Exchange Program- Sidra Shoaib reached USA

1st-August-2008: Sidra Shoaib Student of SNPETHSS has proceeded to USA through i-Earn international community in YES program for one year. She is living with a host family of North Carolina, USA.

Every year one/two students from SNPETHSS qualify to study in USA school on scholarship basis.

Girl Guide Camp

7-Apr-2008: The students of Grade seven and eight organized Girl Guide camp at the school campus. Class Teachers instructed the students about camping with kitchen, bed room and a bathroom. Students used easily available material to fix everything. The school principal Mrs. Faiza Shahrukh visited the camp and appreciated the students work.

Girl Guide Seminar in Lhaore

10-Apr-2008: Grade 8 students attended a seminar on the importance of water. The seminar was organized by Girl Guide Pakistan at the Girl Guide Camp, New Muslim Town, Lahore. Girls from different schools of Lahore attended this seminar which was addressed by different environmentalists.

Educational Trip of Science Museum

10-May-2008: Students of grade 6, 7 and 8 visited Science Museum with their teachers. Students got lots of information by visiting Science Galleries on various topics through models, scientific instruments & pictures. Students also visited gallery of legendary scientists with their history & pictures. It was not only informative but also an enjoyable trip.

• 20th October, 2008: Educational Trip to Lahore Zoo was arranged for Grade Nursery & Prep of morning/Evening shifts along with teachers. Students got an opportunity to know about different kinds of animals & birds of many countries of the world. It was a very recreational visit.

• 21st October, 2008: Educational Trip to Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Lahore was arranged for Grade 1 & 2 morning & evening shifts along with teachers. Students got an opportunity to know about different kinds of Plants, Trees, Animals,

• 22nd October, 2008: Educational Trip to Lahore Fort was arranged for Grade 3, 4 & 5 along with teachers. Students got an opportunity to know about the Mughal Era, Mughal Emperors, Islamic art of construction, Museum, Shrine of Allama Iqbal and Badshahi Mosque.

• 25th October, 2008: Educational Trip to Kheora Mines and Kallar Kahar was arranged for Grade 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th along with Principal and Teachers. Students got an opportunity in Kheora Mines to know about the natural resources of our country and world’s second largest salt range. During visit of Kheora Mines following things are worth seeing:

Students Forum - SAMA TV

24th October, 2008: SAMA TV organized and recorded Forum of SNPETHSS students by famous T.V. compare Mr. Faisal Qureshi. Students discussed and debated on various educational and non-educational issues of their lives. They also shared their ideas with Faisal Qureshi on current affairs.

Girls Guide Tour to Murree

July 6th 2009: Physical health and fitness of the students are among the major objectives of the Sanjan Nagar Trust. Every year, class six, seven and eight students participate in the Girl Guide Tour Camp organized by Punjab Girl Guide Association in Murree. Under the supervision of Ms. Misbah Rani

Rasheed and Ms. Fozia, ten students of the senior school went to Murree Hills to participate in Girl Guide Camp. During this week long visit, children learnt and shared different extra curricular learning like washing, cooking, cleaning and serving, they also took the responsibility for notice board, camp newspaper, mess, health & cleanliness etc.

INTERNSHIPS AND VOLUNTEERS AT SNPETHSS

Internees from Beaconhouse School System

10th June to 10th July 2008: Senior students from Beaconhouse school joined SNPETHSS as internees to teach grade 4 & 5 students. The main objective of the teaching/assisting the student was to enhance their proficiency in English and to speed up their minds for . A cordial certification ceremony was organized at the end of internship.

Dr. Tanya Sumroo Volunteering at Sanjan Nagar

15th April to 13th June, 2008: Dr. Tanya is a pediatrician. She is Assistant Professor at Fatima Memorial Hospital. Following are the main points, she concentrated on during the volunteership:

• She visited to SNPETHSS three days a week. • She worked voluntarily as a school doctor provided free medical check ups for children in SNPETHSS. • Interactive sessions were also held with individual classes from nursery to class 10 on health/ hygiene/ infection control and nutrition. • A few sessions on basic first aid were also conducted for girls from class 8-10 and teachers. These covered basic life support and other first aid emergencies such as management of burns, bleeding and electrical injuries. A list was also made of contents for the ideal first aid box, and a complete box will be provided to the school at the start of the new term.

8th-May-2008: Mrs. Zehra Majid Ali famous literary figure and sister to Anwar Maqsood, was invited as a guest speaker. She was accompanied by Mrs. Rashida Raza. She shared her childhood memories & took views of students of grade 7 and 8 about Urdu Literature. She visited different classes and expressed her emotions through poetry:

Visit of an English Journalist

18th-August-2008: Ms. Mian Ridge from UK visited the SNPETHSS. She observed different classes, students and teachers in different learning and teaching activities. She appreciated the hard work of students and teachers. She also had a brief question and answer session with students. This visit was her part of the research work about education system in Pakistan.

LUMS Team Visit

January 20, 2009: Muhammad Asad Ul Haue, senior officer, Lums University visited the Sanjan Nagar School and talked to senior students of Grade, 9, 10, 11 and 12. he talked on National Outreach Programme of LUMS university and opportunities for Sanjan Nagar school students in this program.

Duniya TV Team and Ms. Sania Saeed

January 27th, 2009: A team from Duniya TV visited Sanjan Nagar School to capture school students and teachers busy in learning and teaching activities. They were on a mission to create a documentary on Sanjan Nagar School system. Ms. Nadia Jamil, a famouse TV artist along with Sania Saeed, a TV artist also visited with them. All school students met with them warmly.

AKU-EB Director Visit

April 27, 2009: Karima Kara and Ms. Alia, Associate Director and Manager Curriculum & Exam Development of AKU visited the Sanjan Nagar School.

The following points were discussed in the meeting.

• Placement of AKU-EB intermediate students in different colleges.

• Communication issues with the AKU board and academic related issues i.e. selection of subjects.

• Recommendation was made to have AKU-EB site office in Lahore too.

The purpose of the visit was also to visit schools and colleges, to thank and encourage institutions for AKU-EB affiliation. They met Mr. Peter Armacost Principal Forman Christian College and Dr. Bernadette Dean Principal Kinnaird College to encourage merit admissions for AKU-EB students, sensitive to a different marking system and also for the affiliation of intermediate program with AKU-EB.

June 9, 2009: A volunteer Ms. Valerie Kaul along with SNPET Trustee, Mrs. Tasneem Maqbool visited the Sanjan Nagar School. They visited different sections of the school and its facilities. Ms. Valerie Kaul was most impressed with the environment, the faculty and the students; she generously donated Rs. 40,000 to the school. Thank You!

SNPET take pleasure in sharing that the UWI-Citigroup Foundation grant for the year 2008-09 has been renewed. This grant will utilize to sustain education excellence and entitlements of the underprivileged through professional development.

Collaboration with WWF

April 24, 2009: SNPETHSS students from class 5 to 8 with some teachers celebrated Earth Day on 24th April in Ali Auditorium with WWF and different schools of Lahore. The students were shown a documentary on “Forests of Pakistan” and were provided with Earth Day stickers. Majority of the prizes of the quiz, after the documentary session was won by SNS students. The school has been enlisted as the active schools of Lahore and will always be notified for all school activities in future. The school has also requested for free membership with WWF.
