The Guardian - Hamlet review – Benedict Cumberbatch is the sanest of Danes Hamlet review – Benedict Cumberbatch is the sanest of Danes . Cumberbatch is a strikingly eloquent Hamlet in an evening of fitful illumination Susannah Clapp @susannahclapp Sun 30 Aug 2015 08.00 BST Last modified on Thu 22 Mar 2018 00.10 GMT ‘The control is a marvel, and a limitation’: Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet at the Barbican. Photograph: Johan Persson/PA https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2015/aug/30/hamlet-review-benedict-cumberbatch-the-sanest-of-danes- observer The Guardian - Hamlet review – Benedict Cumberbatch is the sanest of Danes don’t think I have ever seen a more rational Hamlet. When Benedict Cumberbatch tots up his bodkins, whips, fardels and slings in “To be or not to be”, he might be enlisting the audience’s support in a debate about assisted dying. Each possibility is laid out with complete clarity and assessed. Like a first-rate barrister in training, he nips around his mind to argue against himself. Anyone who has seen Cumberbatch on stage over the past decade knows he is as quick and varied in the theatre as he is enclosed and enigmatic on the small screen. It is 10 years since he was a startlingly youthful Tesman in Hedda Gabler. He has since been languorous in Rattigan, exact in Ionescu and playfully monstrous in Frankenstein. Now it turns out that he also has an elastic ease with Shakespearean verse. He can shift an emphasis – “You were sent for…” – or drop in a 21st - century intonation without missing a beat or skewing the sense.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by MURAL - Maynooth University Research Archive Library DOI: 10.1111/lic3.12470 ARTICLE “I will never play the Dane”: Shakespeare and the performer's failure Richard O'Brien University of Birmingham Abstract Correspondence Richard O'Brien, Department of Film and The cultural prestige accorded to Shakespeare's great roles Creative Writing, University of Birmingham, has made them high watermarks for ‘great acting’ in general. Birmingham, UK. Email: [email protected] They are therefore also uniquely capable of channelling a performer's sense of his own failure. The 1987 film Withnail &Ifamously ends with its title character, an out‐of‐work actor and self‐destructive alcoholic, delivering Hamlet's “What a piece of work is a man” to an audience of unre- sponsive wolves. And in 2014's The Trip to Italy, Steve Coogan plays a fictionalised version of himself: a comedian who fears he will never be remembered as a serious artist. On a visit to Pompeii, Coogan's delivery of Hamlet's speech to Yorick's skull similarly becomes a way of channelling the series's wider reflections on fame, mortality, and the value of the actor's art. Drawing on Marvin Carlson's argument that the role of Hamlet is unusually densely ghosted by its previous occupants, this article will explore how these two contemporary depictions of struggling performers evoke the received idea of the great Shakespearean role as the pinnacle of the actor's art to respond to the dilemma of how to cope with creative failure.

  • Michael Sheen's Visit
Hollywood actor Michael Sheen spends Friday evening with young social entrepreneurs in East London Hollywood actor Michael Sheen spent his Friday evening (Friday 22nd February 2019) in East London getting to know social entrepreneurs from Bow based Social Ark, a community based Social Enterprise. The visit was organised in partnership with Social Enterprise UK where Sheen is a Patron. Social Ark founder, Lisa Stepanovic had reached out to Sheen via Twitter to ask he come and see how a working-class community is putting the social enterprise model to work, not just for their own organisation, but for the people in their community who go on to set up their own businesses as a result of the support provided by Lisa and the Social Ark family. Sheen is an actor with numerous stage, film and TV credits to his name. A few include; The Queen, Caligula, Frost Nixon and Hamlet. This year he’ll be seen in The Good Fight and in Good Omens with many other productions on the way. Sheen was in London during a break in filming of The Good Fight. Sheen had previously expressed an interest in how the social enterprise model could be used by communities seeking to “take back control”, particularly those with strong working class roots and in the post-industrial communities of South Wales. Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive, SEUK, said: Social enterprises like Social Ark create opportunities for people that need them most. One in three social enterprises work in the most deprived communities in the UK and Social Ark is a shining example of the social enterprise ethos.

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue.
