The Guardian - Hamlet review – Benedict Cumberbatch is the sanest of Danes Hamlet review – Benedict Cumberbatch is the sanest of Danes . Cumberbatch is a strikingly eloquent Hamlet in an evening of fitful illumination Susannah Clapp @susannahclapp Sun 30 Aug 2015 08.00 BST Last modified on Thu 22 Mar 2018 00.10 GMT ‘The control is a marvel, and a limitation’: Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet at the Barbican. Photograph: Johan Persson/PA https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2015/aug/30/hamlet-review-benedict-cumberbatch-the-sanest-of-danes- observer The Guardian - Hamlet review – Benedict Cumberbatch is the sanest of Danes don’t think I have ever seen a more rational Hamlet. When Benedict Cumberbatch tots up his bodkins, whips, fardels and slings in “To be or not to be”, he might be enlisting the audience’s support in a debate about assisted dying. Each possibility is laid out with complete clarity and assessed. Like a first-rate barrister in training, he nips around his mind to argue against himself. Anyone who has seen Cumberbatch on stage over the past decade knows he is as quick and varied in the theatre as he is enclosed and enigmatic on the small screen. It is 10 years since he was a startlingly youthful Tesman in Hedda Gabler. He has since been languorous in Rattigan, exact in Ionescu and playfully monstrous in Frankenstein. Now it turns out that he also has an elastic ease with Shakespearean verse. He can shift an emphasis – “You were sent for…” – or drop in a 21st - century intonation without missing a beat or skewing the sense.

  • Winter 2018 Newsletter of Actors and Others for Animals
WINTER 2018 NEWSLETTER OF ACTORS AND OTHERS FOR ANIMALS WWW.ACTORSANDOTHERS.COM It was more than 25 years ago that Actors and Others established its medical subsidy program. Today, the number of requests we receive is staggering and rising rapidly. Without our help, many pets would not get any treatment and face an unknown future. Pet guardians don’t anticipate that their pets may get ill or injured, and many find themselves financially unable to provide treatment. And this is even more widespread nowadays with more and more animal shelters giving away pets in an effort to adopt our more animals, charging very little or having special “2 for $10.00” promotions. While it is impossible to predict when and what illness or injury may strike your pet, it is important to understand that at some point it will. We see a lot of bladder stones, urinary infections, tumors and eye removals. A great many of the requests for help we receive are for broken bones, lacerations and amputations caused by being hit by a car. We also see a lot of cases of injuries from dog fights. The common denominator in a lot of these cases is that the dog was not on a leash. Delay in getting veterinary care also results in infections and abscesses. “Intervention” is the new buzz word in animal welfare to keep pets in the homes, and Actors and Others’ long-standing veterinary intervention program once again has shown itself to lead the way! HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF HOW YOUR SUPPORT HAS HELPED BOTH PETS AND THEIR GRATEFUL GUARDIANS Lindsey G.

Birmingham, UK. Email: [email protected] They are therefore also uniquely capable of channelling a performer's sense of his own failure. The 1987 film Withnail &Ifamously ends with its title character, an out‐of‐work actor and self‐destructive alcoholic, delivering Hamlet's “What a piece of work is a man” to an audience of unre- sponsive wolves. And in 2014's The Trip to Italy, Steve Coogan plays a fictionalised version of himself: a comedian who fears he will never be remembered as a serious artist. On a visit to Pompeii, Coogan's delivery of Hamlet's speech to Yorick's skull similarly becomes a way of channelling the series's wider reflections on fame, mortality, and the value of the actor's art. Drawing on Marvin Carlson's argument that the role of Hamlet is unusually densely ghosted by its previous occupants, this article will explore how these two contemporary depictions of struggling performers evoke the received idea of the great Shakespearean role as the pinnacle of the actor's art to respond to the dilemma of how to cope with creative failure.

University of Nevada, Reno Genres of Resistance: Western-American Womanhood and Authorship A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English by Monique A. McDade Dr. Katherine Fusco/Dissertation Advisor May, 2020 THE GRADUATE• SCHOOL We recommend that the dissertation prepared under our supervision by entitled be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Advisor Committee Member Committee Member Committee Member Graduate School Representative David W. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean Graduate School i Abstract Genres of Resistance: Western-American Womanhood and Authorship traces a genealogy of diverse, Western-American women writers who play with dominant literary genres to recover the histories and narratives written over by the nation’s discourses of Manifest Destiny, westward expansion, and American exceptionalism. The project is predicated on Benedict Anderson’s argument in Imagined Communities that the nation is an invention and that an homogenous, continuous national identity is imagined and sustained through print capitalism, specifically the 18th-century novel and newspaper industry. The project recognizes that, as the American nation moves into the 19th and early-20th centuries, the literary marketplace undergoes dramatic shifts and changes just as the nation is expanding geographically and increasing its global presence. Thus, the project is concerned with how the late-19th and early-20th century women writers considered—María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Helen Hunt Jackson, Sui Sin Far, and an author this dissertation is introducing for the first time into critical discussions, Eva Rutland—use new genres (the short story and the travel essay) and new literary modes (sentimentalism, regionalism, and realism) as a means to speak back to the homogenizing efforts of dominant literary productions.
