  • An Audience Perspective on the Tabloidisation of News in The
NEWS WE CAN USE: AN AUDIENCE PERSPECTIVE ON THE TABLOIDISATION OF NEWS IN THE UNITED S. ELIZABETH STATES BIRD Abstract In the United States, television news is where the issue S. Elizabeth Bird is of tabloidisation is most loudly debated, as news merges Professor in the into the countless talk shows and syndicated reality Department of programming. While critics often place the blame on the Anthropology, University journalism profession itself, I focus on the audience drive of South Florida, Tampa. toward tabloidisation, critiquing both the uncritical celebra- tion of the active audience, and the view that audiences are simply mindless recipients of whatever journalists feed them. Using data from a small study of news audiences, I argue that we must understand the value of dramatic, narrative news in everyday life. At the same time, I argue that the storytelling news style, characterised by discon- nected, highly personal narratives, is in danger of replacing rational, considered, and critical analysis in news. In particular, young people are becoming less interested in news, and less critical of the techniques typical of tabloid Vol.5 (1998),3 style. I conclude that we must strive to develop a journa- lism that could embrace tabloid style, while still inviting audiences to participate more fully in a civic democracy. If journalism cannot rise to that challenge, it may be that in the tabloidised environment of the American news media, the battle for large-scale, serious public discourse is already lost. 33 Introduction: Tabloidisation in the United States Although the process of tabloidisation is understood rather similarly in Britain and the United States, we need to understand differences in the way news has developed in both countries, especially in the way audiences have been characterised.1 Sparks (1992, 27) writes about the clear dichotomy between the quality and tabloid press in Britain, which differentiates the popular from other journalism as clearly as Bach is distinguishable from Motorhead.

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW “THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS”: USING MULTIMEDIA MATERIALS TO TEACH ENTERTAINMENT LAW K.J. GREENE* INTRODUCTION Many law students dream of working in the entertainment industry, both here in southern California, and around the country.1 Perhaps that aspiration accounts for Entertainment Law’s perennial status as one of the most popular electives in the law school curriculum.2 Even students who do not seek careers in the entertainment field find the subject matter stimulating, with a syllabus that covers cases and controversies involving the likes of Bill Cosby, Pamela Anderson, Howard Stern, and Jay Z. I greatly enjoy teaching first year Contracts, and I also teach or have taught electives such as the basic Intellectual Property (IP) course, the Right of Publicity, and Music Law.

  • Part I. Introduction
PART I. INTRODUCTION A. Overview The past 12 months have been the most momentous period in the history of the television violence issue. A year ago there were no V-chips, television content ratings, minimum air time requirements for educational television or public discussions about the context in which television violence occurs. Now these developments frame the television violence issue. In September 1995 the UCLA Center for Communication Policy released its first report on the state of television violence. Rather than examining a one- or two-week sample that might contain unusually light or heavy concentrations of violence, the Center thoroughly examined every series, television movie, theatrical film and Saturday morning children’s program on broadcast network television. In addition, we monitored every on-air promotion and advertisement aired during this programming. Our report found that while there were positive signs in the areas of network television series and television movies, there were significant problems in the areas of theatrical films shown on television, on-air promotions and children’s television. Last year’s report concluded with an analysis of the 1994-95 television season, a series of recommendations that we felt would significantly address television violence and an invitation to the broadcast networks to work with us over the next year on this issue. Upon its release, the four networks promised to carefully study the report and its recommendations and accepted the offer to work together on this very difficult and contentious problem. While much work remains to be done over the third and subsequent years of this process, we are happy to report that the broadcast networks were serious in their desire to work with us to improve the ways in which they deal with television violence.
