    September - December 2009 LIBRARY OPENS CENTER FOR YOUNG READERS By Kimberly Rieken The Library of Congress, for the first time in its history, has a space devoted to the reading interests of children and teens in its historic Thomas Jefferson Building. On Oct. 23, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington welcomed a group of young people, parents and others to the new Young Readers Center, in Room LJ G-31, ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building. “We want you and other young readers to have a place where you can gain an introduction to the wonders of your nation’s library,” Billington told the children gathered in the center. The Librarian, with the help of Mrs. Billington, introduced the book “Moomin Troll” by Tove Jansson, from which the Billingtons read to the children. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., and her children and Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., and his son helped open the new center. A mother of three, the congresswoman said she was honored to be at the opening. “There’s nothing like an event in Washington with children,” she said. Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.

However, we had our usual small total of about 10 trick or treaters, so it was a relaxing night. The next day, after going to the YMCA in the morning, we had a quick lunch at a diner (which used to be as prevalent in New Jersey as mushrooms in a field, but recently have diminished to one every few towns) followed by a ride to Newark Airport to pick up Mark and Kate who flew back from a week at Disney World. They had a good week there, climaxed by a huge Halloween party at the Magic Kingdom so that they came home with two huge bags filled with candy. November is the month of the Indian Culture Club’s annual Family Diwali Dinner, and it was very successful. The officers did a good job planning it, the families brought lots of food, and everybody enjoyed themselves.

    Steve Martin

    Steve Martin Steve Martin has become one of the world's best-known comedic personalities. Oddly enough, he started out studying philosophy and wanted to become a college professor in the subject. He is a member of Mensa International (an organization for people with very high IQs). His studies, though, turned him in the exact opposite direction. He dropped out of college to pursue a career in comedy writing for numerous television shows before going solo as a stand-up comedian. His experience in philosophy taught him to try ridiculous twists that launched a great career and numerous world renowned catch phrases. Stephen Glenn Martin, born August 14, 1945, is an American comedian, writer, producer, actor, musician and composer. He was born in Waco, Texas and raised in Orange County, California, he worked at Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland in concessions. Steve credits this with the beginning of his love for entertainment. He developed his skills in playing the banjo, lassoing, juggling, making balloon animals and improvisational comedy. When he went to college at California State University, long Beach he majored in philosophy. His goal was to become a philosophy professor, but something in his studies changed his mind. “In philosophy, I started studying logic, and they were talking about cause and effect, and you start to realize, ‘Hey, there is no cause and effect! There is no logic! There is no anything!" Then it gets real easy to write this stuff, because all you have to do is twist everything hard - you twist the punch line, you twist the non sequitur so hard away from the things that set I up, that it's easy..

    Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.
