Do céu A Estrela do Norte, do inferno Os Carrascos Também Morrem: A ideologia estadunidense no cinema hollywoodiano (1943). 2018. Nºf. ABSTRACT OLIVEIRA, Maicon Alexandre Timm de. From Heaven The North Star, from hell Hangmen Also Die!: The American Ideology in Cinema Hollywood (1943).2018. Dissertation (Master in History) post-graduation program in history, Institute of Humanities, Federal University of Pelotas, Pelotas, 2018. The cinema, since its constitution as art in the late nineteenth century, has entered into people's lives, initially serving as a means of entertainment, but over the years, the cinematic narratives have been observed by the state leaders as a New way of spreading their ideological issues, countless would be the examples, for that matter. The cinema would also take on a growing prominence, especially after the 1970, as a source for the historical study. If initially relegated, over time demonstrated its importance, constituting as one of the new forms for the growth of discipline. The Second World War was one of those moments when national cinemas were tasked with valuing their nations to the utmost. Nazism is an example of how films have become great sources of dissemination of ideologies. However this particularity was not restricted only to the Germans, the United States also took advantage of the structure of Hollywood in order to carry out its ideological transposition, for this we will analyze throughout this study the films Hangmen also Die!, 1943 of Fritz Lang and the North Star, 1943 Lewis Milestone, and also how the narratives were used to accomplish certain goals. Between them two can be emphasized: 1. Build a negative image against Nazi enemies, demonstrating all their cruelty, to other peoples, and by 2. The process of the ideological appreciation for the United States, the cinematic narratives present throughout the film certain references to the Americans and the role they would have as worthy leaders and defenders of world peace. It would fit this nation with the support of others, impose the final blow and eliminate the Nazi menace. Based on this this study aims to analyze how the American government used the Hollywood cinema during the year 1943, to disseminate its ideological propositions. Key words: Cinema; History; Ideology; United States; Second Mundial War. LISTA DE TABELAS Tabela 1: Modelo de ficha de análise cinematográfica......................................50

  • ST. JAMES THEATER (Originally Erlanger Theater), 246-256 West 44Th Street
Landmarks Preservation Commission December 15, 1987; Designation List 198 LP-1374 ST. JAMES THEATER (originally Erlanger Theater), 246-256 West 44th Street. Built 1926-27; architects, Warren & Wetmore. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1015, Lot 54. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the St. James Theater (originally Erlanger Theater) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 70). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The St. James (built as the Erlanger) Theater survives today as one of the historic playhouses that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1926-27, the St. James was designed by the prominent firm of Warren & Wetmore as the last Broadway theater erected for Abraham Erlanger. Abraham Erlanger had been a principal in the infamous Klaw & Erlanger Theatrical Syndicate, which had dominated the American theater industry for several decades on either side of the turn of the century. After the break-up of the Syndicate, Klaw and Erlanger went their separate ways, and each built theaters named for themselves.

Brecht in Hollywood Hangmen Also Die and the Anti-Nazi Film Gerd Gemünden Die beste Schule für Dialektik ist die Emigration. Die schärfsten Dialektiker sind die Flüchtlinge. —Bertolt Brecht, Flüchtlingsgespräche (, :) [The best school for dialectics is emigration. The refugees are the sharpest dialectic thinkers.] I Bertolt Brecht arrived in San Pedro, California, on July and de- parted from the United States on November , one day after his HUAC hearing in Washington, DC. Often referred to as an exile in paradise, Brecht’s stay in this country proved to be one of the most difficult times of his life. It also turned out to be one of Brecht’s most prolific periods, leading to an out- pouring of poetry and prose, and to the writing of many plays which, when first performed upon his return to Germany, established his world fame. From the very beginning of his stay, Brecht also wrote scripts, outlines, and treat- ments—more than in all (Gersch :–)—which he hoped to sell to the Hollywood film industry. Yet apart from his ill-fated collaboration with Fritz Lang, Hangmen Also Die (), none of them ever made it onto the screen. Most literary critics have considered Brecht’s scripts and film stories as insignificant, and very much inferior to the plays and poems written during his years of exile. Brecht himself set the tone for this interpretation, calling these writings bread-and-butter jobs to which he subjected himself, all the while scolding the industry for which they were written. We all know the fa- mous verses about the market where lies are sold, and about the stench of greed and misery that suffocates the city of angels.

Presents THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND Directed by ORSON WELLES Produced by FRANK MARSHALL AND FILIP JAN RYMSZA Running Time: 2:02 Publicity Contacts: Chris Regan [email protected] | 323-459-0183 Christine Richardson [email protected] | 917-968-5878 Katia Jacoby [email protected] | +31 629 725 871 1 SHORT SYNOPSIS Surrounded by fans and skeptics, grizzled director J.J. "Jake" Hannaford (a revelatory John Huston) returns from years abroad in Europe to a changed Hollywood, where he attempts to make his comeback: a career summation that can only be the work of cinema's most adventurous filmmaker, Orson Welles. FULL SYNOPSIS In 1970, legendary director Orson Welles (CITIZEN KANE) began filming what would ultimately be his final cinematic opus with a cast of Hollywood luminaries including John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and Welles’s partner during his later years, Oja Kodar. Beset by financial issues, the production ultimately stretched years and gained notoriety, never to be completed or released. More than a thousand reels of film negatives languished in a Paris vault until March of 2017, when producers Frank Marshall (who served as Welles’s production manager during his initial shooting) and Filip Jan Rymsza spearheaded efforts to have the film completed after over 40 years. Featuring a new score by Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand and reassembled by a technical team including Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND is Orson Welles’s vision fulfilled. It tells the story of grizzled director J.J. “Jake” Hannaford (Huston), who returns to Los Angeles after years in self-exile in Europe with plans to complete work on his own innovative comeback movie.
