Hanuman Jayanti Here is something for us to ponder upon: In the Bhagvad Gita, Lord Krishna calls Apr 14 Tuesday Arjuna a hypocrite and a coward because of his refusal to fight with his Tamil New Year friends and relatives pleading that non-resistance was the highest ideal of love. April 15 Wednesday One can infer that the two extremes are alike in any given situation. Varuthani Ekadashi / Shri Vallabhacharya Jayanti When the vibrations of light are too slow, we do not see them, nor do we see April 18 Saturday them when they are too rapid. So it is with sound; we do not hear it when the Chetichand celebration pitch is too low or very high. Same is true for resistance and non-resistance. Jai Krishna, Kshama Balvihar by Sriram Kiron OUR BALVIHAR SESSION OF FEBRUARY 22, 2015 We celebrated “Shivaratri” in our balvihar session of February 22, 2015. Shree Sudhir ji, one of our Berlin Temple Priests, came to help us perform Shiv puja. We were all given a puja thaali which had haldi, kumkum, flower petals, an apple for offering, yellow rice, water, betel nut representing Lord Ganesh ji and a small rock to represent Lord Shiva. We performed Shiv puja being guided by Sudhir ji. He explained the significance of performing different things in a puja, and why we do it. The Shiv puja went off very well. The whole place was filled with good vibrations as we chanted various shlokas and “Om Namah Shivaya” chantings. The puja went on for the duration of the whole Balvihar session and it was definitely a very calming experience. After puja, we went to the cafeteria to find a hot, Indian lunch awaiting us. ***************************************************************************** Youth Group by Rashmi Devadiga The Youth group met again on March 8th at Cherokee High school. Praveen Uncle was not here,so class was run by Lalit Uncle. Rather than what we normally do, we took time to talk about our future, more specifically college and jobs. We discussed how we should have passion for what we do, so that we do our best. We also talked about what problems we can face if we decide to change our career after we have already started. This topic then led into a conversation about skills that we need to have, such as communication, in order to do our job properly and how important it is for us to build these skills over the years. After our long and meaningful discussion, we headed down for Aarthi and finished our session with pizza. Thanks to Lalit Uncle for a great class! • Catholic Shrines in Chennai, India: the Politics of Renewal and Apostolic Legacy
CATHOLIC SHRINES IN CHENNAI, INDIA: THE POLITICS OF RENEWAL AND APOSTOLIC LEGACY BY THOMAS CHARLES NAGY A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Victoria University of Wellington (2014) Abstract This thesis investigates the phenomenon of Catholic renewal in India by focussing on various Roman Catholic churches and shrines located in Chennai, a large city in South India where activities concerning saintal revival and shrinal development have taken place in the recent past. The thesis tracks the changing local significance of St. Thomas the Apostle, who according to local legend, was martyred and buried in Chennai. In particular, it details the efforts of the Church hierarchy in Chennai to bring about a revival of devotion to St. Thomas. In doing this, it covers a wide range of issues pertinent to the study of contemporary Indian Christianity, such as Indian Catholic identity, Indian Christian indigeneity and Hindu nationalism, as well as the marketing of St. Thomas and Catholicism within South India. The thesis argues that the Roman Catholic renewal and ―revival‖ of St. Thomas in Chennai is largely a Church-driven hierarchal movement that was specifically initiated for the purpose of Catholic evangelization and missionization in India. Furthermore, it is clear that the local Church‘s strategy of shrinal development and marketing encompasses Catholic parishes and shrines throughout Chennai‘s metropolitan area, and thus, is not just limited to those sites associated with St. Thomas‘s Apostolic legacy. i Acknowledgements This thesis is dedicated to the memory of my father Richard M.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis is an anthropological exploration of the connections between witchcraft, religious transformation, and Hindu nationalism in a village in an Adivasi (or ‘tribal’) area of eastern Maharashtra, India. It argues that the appeal of Hindu nationalism in India today cannot be understood without reference to processes of religious and social transformation that are also taking place at the local level. The thesis demonstrates how changing village composition in terms of caste, together with an increased State presence and particular view of modernity, have led to difficulties in satisfactorily curing attacks of witchcraft and magic. Consequently, many people in the village and wider area have begun to look for lasting solutions to these problems in new ways.
