  • Building Puppets
StopAnimation-07 6/11/06 10:10 PM Page 129 Stop-Motion Chapter 7 Building Puppets think too many people take puppets for granted. Stop and think for a moment about how surreal and amazing the concept of a puppet is. It resembles a person or an animal but has no life of its own. It is simply an inanimate object, a lifeless lump of material. But when a real person manipulates it Isomehow, it brings forth the illusion of life. Puppets have been with us since ancient times, and, for me, they have always been a fascination in one form or another. Having grown up in the late 1970s through the ’80s, Jim Henson’s Muppets were a constant source of entertainment. I vividly remember seeing them on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1981, and seeing live puppet performances from different world traditions there as well. In elemen- tary school, we had a puppeteer who brought his marionette plays to the gymnasium every year, starring a dragon named Applesauce. Since I had toy pup- pets of my own, I knew how they were operated, yet at the same time I believed they were alive. Another obsession of mine from growing up in the ’80s were the animatronic animal rock bands at places like Chuck E. Cheese’s and Showbiz Pizza Place. These also seemed to be alive, but they were not operated by live puppeteers. Instead, they were programmed by a computer synced with audio tapes behind the stage, delivering a performance that had been premeditated to repeat itself.

  • Scholarly Agenda 2015
JONATHAN B. NEWTON Instructor, PSU Department of Music Scholarly Agenda/Self-Appraisal Revised: January, 2015 Research And Other Creative Activities Previous to my employment at PSU, I worked as a free-lance music producer, conductor, composer, performer, arranger, and critic. My goal as a college student was to compose music for film, and during my career I scored five theatrically released feature films along with several television shows, songs, trailers, and opens. IMDB page: http://imdb.com/name/nm0628543/ With the purpose of being able to produce music locally, during a time when the recording business in Portland was still developing, I joined with partner Michael Bard to create what became a successful audio and music recording facility, Newton/Bard Inc. The bulk of our work became music and sound design for television and radio commercials and corporate video, and we generated a great deal of creative content from 1986-1994. Along the way I conducted nearly fifty music theater projects, composed serious music, arranged for ensembles small and large, produced numerous stage shows (including the opening ceremonies for both the Portland Performing Arts Center and the Oregon Convention Center) and wrote concert reviews. I created comedy shows, including the popular D’Anse Combeau and Tony Del Mar, and performed, mostly as a bluegrass fiddler—I played on the first recording by popular country singer Colin Wray, and shared the stage with notables such as Vince Gill, John Hartford, Doug Kershaw, Mason Williams, and Byron Berline. In 1994, I joined the staff at Will Vinton Studios, an pre-eminent animation production company, the studio that produced, for example, the California Raisins commercials (now called Laika).

  • Oregon and the Film Industry by Edwin Battistella Early Filmmaking in Oregon Motion Pictures Debuted in Oregon in 1894 When a Kinetoscope Arrived in Portland
Oregon and the Film Industry By Edwin Battistella Early Filmmaking in Oregon Motion pictures debuted in Oregon in 1894 when a kinetoscope arrived in Portland. The innovative technology allowed boxing matches, vaudeville acts, and other popular entertainment to be shown in penny arcades and peepshows and, after 1906, on the nickelodeon. Soon early films were being projected in theaters, first at Cordray’s Opera House in Portland. By 1897, local documentary films were being made, including Fishing on the Willamette (1897), The Portland Fire Department (1901), Decoration Day Parade (1902), Panoramic View of the Columbia (1904), and Opening Ceremonies of the Lewis & Clark Exposition Grounds (1905). In the 1920s, theater owners and print media developed Oregon newsreel content—including Screenland News, the Webfoot Weekly, and Oregonian Screen Review—which lasted throughout that decade. One of the first feature films made in the state was The Fisherman’s Bride, a 1908 silent film produced by Col. William N. Selig’s Polyscope Company. Shot in Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River, the film shows two men vying for a young woman’s hand. She chooses, but the unsuccessful suitor has his rival shanghaied. The Coast Guard rescues the groom-to-be and delivers him to the wedding. That same year Selig converted an old mansion in Los Angeles to a production studio—a movie factory—and kicked off the West Coast expansion of the film industry. From 1908 to 1929, almost fifty full-length silent films were shot in Oregon. The combination of period buildings and diverse outdoor locations seems to have been attractive to early filmmakers, who quickly found their way around the state.
