  • Appendix 3.6
Appendix 3.6 Clergy listed in Exhibit Books, 1717-1810 (AN/EX) Exhibit Books ('Liber Exhibitorum') recorded details about the careers of the clergy within the Archdeaconry. Each clergyman was obliged to exhibit his ordination, institution and induction papers once in each Archdeacon's incumbency. A number of exhibits were usually taken at each spring Visitation. Where a clergyman is named and no details given about ordination, it is probable that he has appeared at a previous visitation, and as such, the details did not need to be repeated. It may, therefore, be necessary to look at several Exhibit Books to obtain this information. Some clergymen, particularly curates, will appear more than once, since their licences were regularly renewed. The Exhibit Books record the dates and places of the clergyman's admittance as deacon and priest, and details about his institution to his current benefice. The books are arranged chronologically by date of Visitation, and within that, by place. The name of the officiant is also recorded (as given) and takes the form of the bishop or archbishop’s first name and diocese/province (e.g. Richard Lincoln = Richard Reynolds, Bishop of Lincoln, 1723-1744; York or Ebor represents the Archbishop of York). For a list of Britain’s senior clergy, see E.B. Fryde, D.E. Greenway, S. Porter and I. Roy (eds), A Handbook of British Chronology (3rd edition, London, 1986). These tables provide abstracts of the contents of the following documents: AN/EX 197: Exhibit Book for 1717, 1727, and 1730-1748 AN/EX 198/1: Exhibit

The Journal of the Viola da Gamba Society Text has been scanned with OCR and is therefore searchable. The format on screen does not conform with the printed Chelys. The original page numbers have been inserted within square brackets: e.g. [23]. Where necessary footnotes here run in sequence through the whole article rather than page by page and replace endnotes. The pages labelled ‘The Viola da Gamba Society Provisional Index of Viol Music’ in some early volumes are omitted here since they are up-dated as necessary as The Viola da Gamba Society Thematic Index of Music for Viols, ed. Gordon Dodd and Andrew Ashbee, 1982-, available on-line at www.vdgs.org.uk or on CD-ROM. Each item has been bookmarked: go to the ‘bookmark’ tab on the left. This tenth volume of Somerset Marriage Registers in- cludes the remaining portion of the Registers of the important parish of St. Mary's, Taunton, down to the year 1812. Of this Mr. Bates undertook the transcription. For Bishop's Hull, and, in part, for Halse, Mr. Seager has been responsible. It is intended that Volume XI shall be devoted to various country Parish Registers. The Marriage Registers of St. James, Taunton, have already been transcribed, and will be printed in a later volume. 4 O^QO/f C The usual contractions have been made use of w.=widower or widow. p.=of the parish ot. s.=spinster, single woman, co.=in the county of. or son of. dioc.=in the diocese of. b.=bachelor, or single man. /?V.=marriage licence. d.=daughter of. The reader must remember that the printed volumes are not "evidence" in the legal sense. Certificates must be obtained from the local clergy in charge of the Registers. It is the Editors' wish to print two volumes annually, and thus to make a steady and substantial progress in the work of preserving our ancient Parish Registers from the risks of destruction or loss to which they are constantly exposed, even in the best circumstances, so long as their con- tents remain in manuscript only.
