The thanks of the Society are due to the Vicar (the Rev. J. Grant James) for kuidly allowing- the Registers to be printed, and for the faciHties he lias most willing-jy afforded for transcrip- tion and examination. The thanks of the Society are also due to Dr. Collins and Mr. T. M. Fallow for most kindly comparing the transcript with the original Registers. The Banns Book of Marske, commencing 1754, has been compared with the Marriage Registers. Entries relating' to people whose Banns were called in Marske CInirch, but who were not married there, are given on pages 159— 161. Where the entry is illegible, or where there is no entry at all, the iiditor has indicated it by [blank\, and where any doubt as to the name exists, by a query. The letters lie. indicate that a Marriage was solemnized by License : where this does not occur it was in all cases performed after the Publication of Banns. The Registers have been kept in Latin down to the year 1685, and it has been thought advisable in indexing to substitute English Christian names for Latin, with the exception of Maria and Jacob, as the latter may stand for either Jacob or James.     Appendix 3.6 Clergy listed in Exhibit Books, 1717-1810 (AN/EX) Exhibit Books ('Liber Exhibitorum') recorded details about the careers of the clergy within the Archdeaconry. Each clergyman was obliged to exhibit his ordination, institution and induction papers once in each Archdeacon's incumbency. A number of exhibits were usually taken at each spring Visitation. Where a clergyman is named and no details given about ordination, it is probable that he has appeared at a previous visitation, and as such, the details did not need to be repeated. It may, therefore, be necessary to look at several Exhibit Books to obtain this information. Some clergymen, particularly curates, will appear more than once, since their licences were regularly renewed. The Exhibit Books record the dates and places of the clergyman's admittance as deacon and priest, and details about his institution to his current benefice. The books are arranged chronologically by date of Visitation, and within that, by place. The name of the officiant is also recorded (as given) and takes the form of the bishop or archbishop’s first name and diocese/province (e.g. Richard Lincoln = Richard Reynolds, Bishop of Lincoln, 1723-1744; York or Ebor represents the Archbishop of York).
