By Anietra Hamper Growing up in Ohio, I was always intrigued by a sign along U.S. Highway 23 north of Columbus that read: “Waldo, Ohio—Home of the World Famous Bologna Sandwich.” Although the sign is long gone, the reputation of that sandwich still stands today. A recent road trip to uncover some of the state’s best comfort food in small Ohio communities gave me the perfect excuse to pull off that exit and others, too. “They are hidden gems of Ohio—mom-and-pop places tucked away in tiny towns filled with Americana charm,” said Mary Cusick, director of Tourism Ohio. Comfort food is not just about secret ingredients, family recipes or careful preparation. It’s a sense of place. It’s the magical way the taste of something wonderful or nostalgic blends with the warm feeling of welcome. Famous Fried Bologna In a town sporting only 338 people and a single flashing red light on Main Street, G&R Tavern is the crown jewel of Waldo. A “cash only” sign in the window is a precursor to the microcosm of small-town America inside. Diners indulge in coconut cream pie. Old baseball trophies line the walls.     Betty's Southern Fried Bologna Sandwich Published on 2 Oct 2015 Betty demonstrates how to make a Southern Fried Bologna Sandwich. This sandwich has fried bologna, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomato inside two slices of toasted hearty white bread. Southern Fried Bologna Sandwich (makes 1 sandwich) 2 slices hearty white bread butter, as needed mayonnaise, to taste mustard, to taste 3/8-inch slice of bologna 2 slices Cheddar cheese lettuce leaves, as desired sliced tomatoes, as desired pickles of your choice, as an accompaniment on plate Using softened butter, spread the top and bottom sides of 2 slices of bread. Place them on a griddle (or skillet) over medium heat and brown each on both sides. Transfer from griddle to plate and set aside. Melt a tablespoon of butter on hot griddle. Place bologna slice on griddle and cook until brown and crisp around the edges. Turn and cook the other side. Transfer to a plate and set aside. To assemble sandwich, spread inside of one slices of toasted bread with mayonnaise and the inside of the other slice with mustard. Place cooked bologna slice on top of mayonnaise-spread toasted bread. Place 2 slices of Cheddar cheese on top of bologna. Place lettuce leaves and sliced tomatoes over the cheese. Place the other piece of toasted bread over all with mustard side down, forming a complete sandwich. Cut diagonally, from corner to opposite corner. Serve with pickles of your choice. SENDVIČI POJAM-RECEPTI i PRIPREMA • Sendvič je hrana koja se sastoji od dva ili više parčeta hleba sa jednim ili više nadeva između njih, ili jednog parčeta hleba sa nadevom ili nadevima na sebi koji se naziva otvoreni sendvič. Sendviči su široko rasprostranjeni, tipična hrana za užinu ili piknike ili kao deo lanč-paketa. Generalno sadrže kombinaciju salatnog povrća, mesa, sira i preliva. Hleb može biti korišten takav kakav jeste ili premazan puterom, uljem, senfom ili nekim drugim namazom da bi se pojačao ukus ili tekstura. Prodaju se u restoranima i kafeima. • Mark Morton je u svom članku iz 2004. godine pod naslovom Bread and Meat for God's Sake (Hleba i mesa za Boga miloga) napisao: Kako su se sendviči zvali pre nego što su postali sendviči? Nakon čitanja stotina tekstova koji su napisani mnogo pre vremena Earla od Sandwicha pojavljuje se jedno moguće, mada prozaično, rešenje – hleb i meso (bread and meat) ili hleb i sir (bread and cheese). Ove dve fraze se mogu pronaći u Engleskim dramama 16. i 17. veka. Na primer, u predstavi Love and Fortune (Ljubav i sudbina) anonimnog autora iz 16. veka mladić moli za „krišku hleba i mesa za Boga miloga“. Šekspir koristi frazu hleb i sir u svom komadu The Merry Wives of Windsor (Vesele žene Vindzorske, 1599.). • Izraz sendvič se u neformalnom jeziku koristi za otvorene sendviče koji se sastoje od jednog parčeta hleba sa mesom, salatom i topingom.
