ACP Meet the Masters at the ACP

Meet the ‘Masters’ at the Council of Princeton! Join your fellow students as you explore art from around the world and from different eras. Each week features a different art tradition which will inspire hands-on art projects using various mixed media. Trips to the Princeton University Art Museum, Morven Museum & Garden and our award-winning Taplin Gallery at the Arts Council of Princeton are also planned, time permitting, throughout the summer.

ART OF ASIA June 25 – June 29, 2018 The vast Asian continent has much to offer and explore! Asia has long captured the West’s imagination with its expressive theater masks, dramatic shadow puppets, beautiful calligraphy, colorful fans and ornate screens. Explore the visual, textile, and sculptural art of ancient Korea, Japan, and India – from Hokusai to Chinese Calligraphy to Marukami. Campers will find plenty of sources to inspire their mixed media projects by exploring Asia’s distinctive cultures and diverse art forms. Your instructor will introduce you to traditional as well as other innovative art techniques from this period in history. A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.

MODERN & July 2- July 6, 2018 (no camp Wed July 4) Living in the now and loving it! Today is a very exciting time in the diverse world of art. Come explore the many techniques used by modern artists to express their love for the world and the people in it. Be inspired by artists such as Frank Stella, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Goldsworthy, , Roy Lichtenstein and more. Using mixed media and everyday products to make extraordinary creations, you too can be a modern artist! A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.

ART OF AFRICA July 9 – July 13, 2018 Travel to Africa and explore the astounding of this continent, from the textile and printmaking traditions of Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ivory Coast, to the of Morocco, and the modern masterpieces of El Anatsui and Ibrahim El Salahi. Campers will explore 2 dimensional, sculpture and ceramics in this week. A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.

ART OF THE MIDDLE EAST July 16 – July 20, 2018 Explore the sculpture and design of this region of the world – Iran, Egypt, Turkey, and others. Beautiful calligraphy, exquisite architecture, tiles and mosaics – explore these traditional art forms – along with modern artists including Nadim Karam, Lalla Essaydi and Alaa Awad. A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.

ART OF THE AMERICAS July 23 – July 27th, 2018 Survey the sculpture, toys and ornament creations of civilizations in the Americas, from ancient times to the present. From Alaska through to Peru, explore the influence of the Maya, Olmec, Incas, Tlingit and Nasca through projects in , ceramics, and sculpture, as well as exploring the folk art of the United States. A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.

ART OF EUROPE July 30 – Aug 3, 2018 Explore Monet's garden, see the Degas’s dancers perform, spend the day with Cassatt's family or eat an apple with Cezanne. Leave an impression or see the stars with Vincent Van Gogh, color with Kandinsky or scream with Munch. Your instructor will guide you through an exploration of these fascinating times and teach you how to make an impression by using art to express yourself. From Picasso’s two dimensional view of life to Chagall’s dream compositions, you will enjoy creating a variety of mixed media art projects (painting, drawing, sculpture and more) that explore the inner consciousness. A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.’

ART OF THE RENAISSANCE August 6- 10th, 2018 The time of the Renaissance was filled with creativity, experimentation and discovery – in fact, the inspiration for this legendary era was the rediscovery of antiquities from Classic Greece and Rome! (“Renaissance” means re-birth). Find yourself in Queen Elizabeth’s court watching a performance by Shakespeare’s troupe or standing next to a gargoyle atop Notre Dame in Paris. Perhaps you will even make some art with Michelangelo in his art studio. No matter where you find yourself, wonderful adventures and art projects will ensue! Artists such as Rembrandt, Parmigianino and Jean-Baptiste Greuze sure did. You will experiment with techniques and subjects made popular by these artists and more. A trip to the Princeton University Art Museum for older children, time permitting, to visit their connected exhibit, is planned.

ART & NATURE: Exploring Nature in Art – The ACP & Morven Aug 13 – Aug 17, 2018 Explore the wild, the green, the garden, the landscape, the art of nature. Investigate drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media through the use of natural objects. Visit famous painters who spent their lives trying to capture the outdoors. Understand environmental artists, who explore our relationship with nature, like Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, Agnes Denes. This is a collaborative week with Morven Museum & Garden. Full day camps for ages 5-9 will be located at Morven, space permitting.

THE ART OF SPORTS – The ACP & Morven Aug 20 – Aug 25th, 2018 Take me out to the ball game! New Jersey was home to many “firsts” in the history of the game of baseball. Campers will be inspired to create a variety of artwork from posters to baseball cards to objects and artifacts including, perhaps, a of a vintage game! Explore the art of sports – baseball cards, posters, and more – in this unique collaboration with Morven Museum & Garden. Full day camps for ages 5-9 will be located at Morven, space permitting.

ART OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – The ACP & Morven Aug 27 – Aug 31, 2018 Marshal Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, led the French expeditionary forces through Princeton in August 1781 to help the Continental Army capture Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. Marching from Phillipsburg, NY, across New Jersey on separate routes, the allied forces united just north of Princeton, followed by the encampment of Rochambeau’s army of 5,000 men on the grounds of Morven on August 29-31, 1781. To commemorate we will focus on the crafts and art forms being created during the Revolutionary War era - portraits, miniature portraits, pen and ink landscapes and doll-making, quilt-making, and basketry. Selected camps will be located at Morven Museum & Garden. DRAMA Camp Campers will work together to create an original production. They will develop characters, contribute to the storyline, create props and costumes and aid in music selections. The week culminates with a very special performance for family and friends.
