BODEGAS LA HORRA Corimbo I 2010 BODEGAS LA HORRA Corimbo I 2010 the growers Bodegas La Horra is a new venture for the now iconic Rioja producer, Bodegas Roda. They spent four years in research and investigation to find the land best adapted to the Tempranillo grape, the variety which is known in depth by the research and technical team at Roda. They found the most suitable region was Ribera del Duero and specifically within this D. O. the area of La Horra, in the province of Burgos. La Horra was chosen, not only because of its long tradition of vine cultivation that it goes back to the pre- Roman times, but because the Roda team concluded that it was the area in which most liked the potential and adaptation of the Tempranillo, as well as being one of the freshest areas of the DO, necessary to produce the style of wine characteristic of Bodegas Roda. their land Spain | Ribera del Duero The cultivation of Tinta del País (Tempranillo) and winemaking tradition in Ribera del Duero (the banks of the River Duero) was established by medieval monasteries and granted DO status in 1982 (the historic Vega Sicilia estate established in 1864). The DO vineyards lie on either side of a 110-km stretch of the river on limestone and chalk soils (some vineyards with so much chalk they are white). The riverbanks and low-lying land with water lying close to the surface are called campiña (countryside) and terrazas (terraces); the shallow slopes above them, which are among the best for vines, are called laderas (sides), and the steeper slopes, not suitable for planting, are called cuestas (slopes). the wine 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo) Vines are an average age of 40 years in La Horra and Roa on limestone/chalk soils. Fermentation in a combination of large wood and stainless steel vats followed by 16 months aging in barrel - 80% French oak and 20% American oak. Alcohol: 14.5% UPC/EAN: 8436538810439 in the glass Ample and full bodied with ripe blackberry fruit, dark chocolate and remarkable minerality showing through. Tannins are firm but well rounded with a balsamic finish that awards it great freshness. A very elegant wine of great balance between the rich fruit, the oak, the cocoa, the underwood aromas and a stark minerality, all blending in harmony in a pleasant but powerful way. press 93 points, International Wine Cellar “Explosive aromas of black and blue fruits, Indian spices, potpourri and smoky minerals, with a mocha quality in the background. Fleshy, expansive and smooth, with excellent clarity and spicy lift to its cassis and boysenberry flavors. The blue fruit and spice notes carry through on the very long, sweet, sharply focused finish, which is framed by velvety tannins.” – Josh Raynolds www.valkyrieselections.com | www.bodegaslahorra.es .

98 CENTRO JOURNAL VOLUME XXVI • NUMBER II • FALL 2014 Between Dissidence and Good NeighBor Diplomacy: Reading Julia de Burgos with the FBI HARRIS FEINSOD ABSTRACT Little is known about Julia de Burgos’s six months as an audit clerk at the Offi ce of the Co- ordinator of Inter-American Affairs in Washington, D.C. (1944-1945). This article recounts this interlude in Burgos’s career by focusing on her FBI fi le and the Hatch Act investigation that led to her termination as a federal employee. Reading the FBI fi le in the vein of literary criticism, the article shows how bureau ghosttranslators characterized Burgos’s political poems as works of dissident Nationalism. In so far as Burgos’s poems navigate the compet- ing ideologies of Puerto Rican Nationalism and Good Neighbor diplomacy, the article links them to a hemispheric matrix of writing—by Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda, Luis Palés Matos, Samuel Putnam and William Carlos Williams, among others—in which Puerto Rican decolonial politics intersect international communism and anticommunism. [Keywords: Julia de Burgos; Pablo Neruda; Elizabeth Bishop; Federal Bureau of Investigations; Good Neigh- bor Policy; Puerto Rican Nationalism] The author ([email protected]) is Assistant Professor in the Department of English and the Program in Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University. His current book project is Fluent Mundo: Inter-American Poetry from Good Neighbors to Countercultures. His recent writing appears or is forthcoming in American Literary History, American Quarterly, Arcade, Chicago Review, and the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics: Fourth Edition, for which he was assistant editor.

  • ROMAN ENGINEERING on the ROADS to SANTIAGO II – the Roads of the Rioja1
© Isaac Moreno Gallo http://www.traianvs.net/ _______________________________________________________________________________ ROMAN ENGINEERING ON THE ROADS TO SANTIAGO II – The roads of the Rioja1 Published in: Revista Cimbra 356 by the Colegio de Ingenieros Técnicos de Obras Públicas [College of Public Works Technical Engineers]. Isaac Moreno Gallo © 2004 [email protected] TRAIANVS © 2005 (Translated by Brian R. Bishop © 2005) Introduction The present-day area of the Rioja has since antiquity been crucial to East-West communications in the North of the Iberian Peninsula. The road that communicated with Aquitania (Aquitaine) from Asturica (Astorga) via Pompaelo (Pamplona) led off the road to Tarraco (Tarragón) through Caesaraugusta (Saragossa) by a deviation at Virovesca (Briviesca). It gave this area a special strategic importance in that it was traversed by the East-West Roman highway for the whole of its present length. Important Roman cities like Libia (Herramélluri-Leiva), Tritium Magallum (Tricio), Vareia (Varea), Calagurris (Calahorra) and Graccurris (Alfaro) flourished, doubtless with the help of this vital communication route. The whole of the later history of the Rioja is closely linked with this spinal column, which has not ceased being used up to today: it performs its purpose still in the form of a motorway. A large part of it served, as only it could, the stream of people and cultures created by the pilgrimage to St. James of Compostela. As a result of this combination of politics and history, of the means of communications, of royal interests, of religious foundations and various other factors, the pilgrim roads changed through the ages. The changes were more visible at the beginning, before the Way was established by the centres of religion and hospitality that were specially founded to attract and care for pilgrims.

The main objective was to detect and diagnose conditions that occur in the current process of socio-economic renovation and innovation in mountain areas. At the same time, we addressed the study of dynamics and processes of change that have occurred in these areas in recent years. All these have determined new forms of occupation and organization, set new directions in land use and opened a discussion on the balance that this model represents. Today, one of the main problems afflicting many of these mountainous areas is the low human occupancy as evidenced by the predominance of extremely low population densities. Most municipalities have an average density of less than 10 inhabitants/km², which is considered the threshold of “demographic desertification”. This weak potential makes difficult to revitalize locally and impairs the development without input of outsider population.
