Mark Stengel, OSB Message Subiaco Abbey has about 230 Oblates associated with the monastery. These men and women are considered real “family members” of the community. As such, this ministry constitutes a larger outreach than the Academy, with less than 200 students. Regularly, 2 The Abbey Message carries information about the Academy, the Alumni, the Coury House, and the Farm. But what and who are these “Oblates?” As I began this article, Abbot’s Message my ideas turned to a theoretical analysis rather than a practical description. That is, God or the Works of God? what are the deep human and divine motivations to which an Oblate responds? Mariah Carey sings about the “Hero Found in You.” The rich young man in the Gospel (Mark 10: 17-27) was diligently keeping all the commandments, but asked Jesus “What else should I do?” John Michael Talbot speaks about ordinary people yearn- 3 ing for “something more,” and how very often this desire impels him or her toward the Abbey Journal religious or monastic life. They sense an “inner monk” seeking expression. The Bud- dhist tradition asks all adherents to live as a monk or nun for several years. Then he or Winter Weather she may continue in the monastic life and make vows, or move on to other pursuits in life. Recently, a married Episcopal woman visited the Abbey. After several days of pray- ing with and interacting with the monks, she commented that it was very fulfilling to be 7 around people who were living out the same impulses that she had been feeling.

    FOSTERING OKODAKICIYE: CATHOLIC MISSIONS AMONG THE YANKTON SIOUX ___________________ A Paper Presented to Dr. Joseph M. White, Ph.D., M.L.S. The Catholic University of America ___________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Course TRS 728J – American Catholics & Social Reform ___________________ by Brother Joshua Patrick Finn, T.O.R. December 18, 2010 (updated May 21, 2011) Okodakiciye (pronounced “o-ko-da-kee-chee-yay”) is a term in the Dakota language that, loosely translated, means “spiritual bonds of friendship.” It is also the title of the newsletter of St. Paul Indian Mission in Marty, S.D., where I was privileged to live with the people of the Ihanktonwan Oyate (Yankton Sioux Tribe) for eight weeks last summer helping to build the Church through personal and communal prayer, presence, learning, and cultural immersion. One learns quickly while working on an Indian reservation that any effective ministry will always be based upon fostering friendly and positive human relationships with the Natives, and simply trusting them. Fostering this virtue of okodakiciye has been and continues to be the backbone of all missionary work on the reservations of the Sioux tribes of South Dakota and elsewhere. It is what the missionaries have been doing—to varying degrees of success—since the first encounter of Fr. News 7 The Realities of Monastery Closings Abbot Primate’s Letter 8 At the 2016 ABA convention, one of the sessions was entitled “The ABA Business 9 Paschal Mystery in the Life and Death of Monasteries.” In it, four panelists spoke frankly about their experience with the recent closing of monasteries. Monastic Studies Grant 10 Father Denis Quinkert was abbot of Blue Cloud Abbey when it closed; Sister Ruth Feeney was a member of St. Bede’s Monastery in Eau Claire, Reports 11 Wisc. The final two panelists offered two perspectives on the closing of Red Plains Monastery in Piedmont, Okla., Sister Melissa Letts as a member of the Membership Renewal 12 community and Jenny Fenner as an oblate. The panel demonstrated that there are as many different experiences of closing as there are monasteries. It also highlighted some of the common elements, such as the discernment about viability, the practical concerns, and the need for both pastoral concern for individuals and group rituals.
