The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 60(3): 1158-1194, 1997 ZOOGEOGRAPHY AND SYSTEMATICS OF SIX DEEP-LIVING GENERA OF SYNAPHOBRANCHID EELS, WITH A KEY TO TAXA AND DESCRIPTION OF TWO NEW SPECIES OF ILYOPHIS Kenneth J. Sulak and Yuri N. Shcherbachev ABSTRACT An extensive series of deep-sea synaphobranchid eels was studied, primarily from previ- ously unreported Russian collections in the southern Indian and southwestern Pacific oceans, Together with previous records, new Russian records provide a worldwide summary of the geographic and bathymetric distributions of the 14 species comprising the genera Diasto- branchus, Haptenchelys, Histiobranchus, llyophis, Simenchelys, and Synaphobranchus. A diagnostic key defines species in these genera, including two newly discovered species of J/yophis. The multi-character key facilitates unequivocal identification of synaphobranchid specimens. Diastobranchus and Histiobranchus are re-established as genera distinct from Synaphobranchus. Diagnoses of subfamilies and genera are refined, The zoogeography of studied taxa is summarized. Synaphobranchid eels are important components of the demersal deep-sea fish fauna at continental slope and rise depths in both temperate and tropical regions. Indeed, in all well-sampled regions except the northeastern Pacific, they have consistently proven to be a dominant fraction of the bathyal fish fauna in terms of relative abundance from bottom trawl samples (Markle and Musick, 1974; Haedrich et al., 1975, 1980; Merrett and Marshall, 1981; Sulak, 1982; Gordon lmd Duncan, 1985; Merrett and Domanski, 1985; Gordon, 1986). Off the northern Mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S. synaphobranchids made up 10-14% of all demersal fishes obtained in 12.2-m otter trawls between 1280 and 1960 m depths (Haedrich and Horn, 1970; Haedrich and Polloni, 1974),53% in 4.9-m trawls between 393- 1095 m (Haedrich et al., 1975) and 21% of all megafauna (fishes and benthic invertebrates) from three trawl types between 653-1290 m (Haedrich et al., 1980). -

Corresponding author: *E-mail: [email protected] Abstract An annotated checklist of the fish species of the Madagascar EEZ (southwestern Indian Ocean) comprises a total of 1,798 species in 247 families. 158 species are recorded from Madagascar for the first time. The majority of the species is autochthonous; 28 species have been introduced, mainly in freshwater habitats. The fish fauna is mostly marine (95.4% of the total number of native fish species), with the Gobiidae, Labridae, Serranidae, Pomacentridae and Apogonidae being the families with most representatives; among the 90 native freshwater fish species (adults mainly occurring in freshwater), the Cichlidae are the dominating family, but there are also two endemic families, the Bedotiidae (16 species) and Anchariidae (6 species). The fish fauna at Madagascar is typical for offshore, high islands in the southwestern Indian Ocean. -

Present study reports details of eels occurring in Pakistan based on published literature as well as through the collection of specimens from various parts of Pakistan. A total of 45species belonging to 8 families of this order were reported from Pakistan. Three species belonging to family Congridae i.e. Ariosoma gnanadossi Talwar & Mukherjee 1977, Bathymyrus echinorhynchus Alcock, 1889a and Rhynchoconger squaliceps (Alcock 1894); 4 species belonging to family Muraenidae i.e. Gymnothorax meleagris (Shaw, 1795), G. phasmatodes (Smith, 1962), Gymnothorax prolatus Sasaki & Amaoka, 1991 and G. reticularis Bloch, 1795 andone species belonging to family Muraneosocidae Gavialiceps arabicus (D'Ancona, 1928) are reported for the first time from Pakistan. Previous records of occurrence of two species in Pakistan i.e. Conger conger (Linnaeus, 1758) and Muraena helena Linnaeus, 1758 are possibly based on misidentification, therefore, their presence in Pakistan is considered to be doubtful. Muranidae is considered to be most diversified family occurring in Pakistan consisting of 17 species followed by family Congridae is represented by 6 and Ophichthidae represented by 7 species. Family Synaphobranchidaeis least diversified represented by only one species. -

On each of two deployments at the southernmost Abyss seamount, over 100 synaphobranchid eels (Ilyophis arx) were recorded feeding on standard bait (1 kg mackerel). Scavenger This is the highest number of fishesper kg of bait ever recorded below 1000 m, including observations from large Seamount Clarion-clipperton zone organic falls such as cetacean and shark carcasses. It is also the highest number that has ever been recorded at CCZ carrion of any kind or size at abyssal depths. We suggest an abyssal ‘seamount effect’ may be responsible, highlighting the potential importance of seamounts in structuring abyssal communities. 1. Introduction Sutton, 2017).
