This paper sheds light on the sorts of population-dynamics-related differences that have emerged in the region and how these differences relate to the use of natural resources and the ethnic composition of the population. Through this study, it was shown that changes have tended to be small in local areas where indigenous peoples who have engaged in traditional natural resource use for a large proportion of the population, while changes have been relatively large in areas where the proportion of non-indigenous people is high and the mining industry has developed. -

First, it conducts a survey of past and present Northern Sea Route (NSR) cargo flows. Then follow discussions of the route’s commercial potential as a transit route, as well as of its economic importance and relevance for each of the Russian Arctic regions. These discussions are summarized by estimates of what types and volumes of NSR cargoes that can realistically be expected in the period 2000-2015. This is then followed by a survey of the status quo of the NSR infrastructure (above all the ice-breakers, ice-class cargo vessels and ports), with estimates of its future capacity. Based on the estimated future NSR cargo potential, future NSR infrastructure requirements are calculated and compared with the estimated capacity in order to identify the main, future infrastructure bottlenecks for NSR operations. The information presented in the report is mainly compiled from data and research results that were published through the International Northern Sea Route Programme (INSROP) 1993-99, but considerable updates have been made using recent information, statistics and analyses from various sources. -

The purpose of this work is to assess the main parameters of the Chukotka and Kolyma glaciers (small forms of glaciation, SFG): their size and volume, and changes therein over time. INTRODUCTION The purposes of the present study are, first of all, a general review of the population migration patterns in the Far East region of Russia following the demise of the Soviet Union; and secondly, a study of the situation that emerged in the developing regions as a result of the state policy of the Soviet period, using the example of the demographic trends in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug as one of the most distal Russian territories with respect to the center of Russia. To date, several studies have been conducted on inter-regional migration in Russia; by the the author (Kumo, 1997, 2003) a comparative analysis of migration in the post-Soviet Russia was conducted and major changes taking place in the migration patterns were considered in the specified periods. Yu. Andrienko and S. Guriev (Andrienko and Guriev, 2002) performed a comparative analysis of inter-regional migration based on the gravity model and showed that the adoption of the migration decision by the population depended on the regional-economic variables. The results of the above-mentioned studies demonstrate that traditional means of analyzing migration patterns can be applied to Russia, which went through the change in the state system, and the authors conclude that migration flows are largely dependent on economic reasons. -

Extreme Winds in the Arctic Coast of Russia: Genesis, Climatology, Trends

Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russian Federation ([email protected]) A joint analysis of observational data (both surface and upper-air), Arctic System Reanalysis version 2 (ASR2) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) wind data allowed to thoroughly investigate all the areas in the Russian Arctic where extremely strong winds (with the wind speed greater than 30 m s-1) are observed, as well as to investigate the genesis of these winds. Special emphasis was made on downslope windstorms, which pose a particular danger, even if the wind does not reach hurricane strength (due to gustiness, potential for vessel icing, clear-air turbulence and sharp temperature fluctuations). In addition to the well-known Novaya Zemlya bora, the Spitsbergen foehn and the windstorm in Pevek (Chukotka), the lesser-known downslope windstorms in Tiksi, on Wrangel Island and on the north-eastern coast of the Gulf of Anadyr were analysed. Statistical estimates of the frequency, duration, wind speed and tem- perature fluctuations during windstorms, as well as long-term trends from the second half of the 20th century to the present, have been obtained. Noticeably, most of trends in the downslope windstorms characteristics is tied to the period August-October, which indicates the connection of these changes with changes in the Arctic climate system, namely, with the enhanced melting of sea ice during this period.
