GAETOS Executive Director Art&FAM E Design has always been the country’s competitive edge. The unparalleled creativity of the Filipino artisan is harmonized into natural and indigenous materials to create market-ready and export-ready lifestyle products showcased biannually at the Manila FAME. As the global market sustains its longing for all things artisanal, Manila FAME continues to address this need by promoting exceptional craftsmanship and encouraging brilliant explorations in Philippine design, while putting buyer and consumer satisfaction at the top of mind. This monograph contains snapshots of the Manila FAME March 2012 and the exhilarating events surrounding it. From the Trend Stores to the DeXign Setting of award-winning designers Budji Layug and Kenneth Cobonpue, the show is brimming with stellar standouts in material and design, contributing to an overwhelming atmosphere of artisanship that only Manila FAME can deliver. More than being the face of design in the international market, Manila FAME is a wonderful economic indicator of the Philippine export industry. The show provides immediate and tangible impact on the country’s export growth, while supporting jobs and livelihood for both low and high skilled workers in countryside communities. A platform for superior Filipino design and craftsmanship for almost three decades, Manila FAME registered unprecedented growth in its March 2012 and October 2011 editions. Manila FAME will continue to uphold its reputation as an authentic Philippine icon that strengthens the country’s position as a Design Destination and Asia’s Design Trendsetter in furniture and furnishings, holiday and gifts and fashion. Little wonder the show has generated critical attention and worldwide patronage over the years. The show has sustained its presence amidst competition from global goliaths in the furniture and furnishings, homeware and fashion industries. The EPOCH Group of fresh, young talents curated an inspiring element for Manila FAME. Dubbed as The Colony, this beehive- inspired installation found functional use as a registration counter. Successfully transformed into a unique, comfortable lounge, this innovative approach to an activity as mundane as “registration” — complete with a golden pile of ripe Philippine mangoes — provided a welcome surprise to travel-weary but design-motivated buyers. Buyers from all over the world register at The Colony, a beehive- inspired counter made from recycled cardboard paper from DEKAHON, Inc. and designed by EPOCH Group. Heritage crafts dating back to prehistoric times are meticulously preserved and highlighted up to the present. WOOD SHAVING OF PAKIL, LAGUNA Wood shaving involves highly skilled and precise hands that whittle softwood into filigreed fans, peacocks, butterflies, birds and flowers. MAT WEAVING OF ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR Mat Weaving is a craft native to the Maguindanao community in Zamboanga del Sur. Seagrass is used as material for the mats, where they are woven to create different patterns. CALADO OF TAAL, BATANGAS This long tradition of hand embroidery is painstakingly executed on fine cloths such as piña (pineapple) or jusi (silk and piña threads). BEADWORKS OF DAVAO Beadworks originate from the Bagobo Tribe in Davao. Multi-colored beads are sewn, adorned or decorated into the cloth and even baskets and accompanied by bells, sequins and pompoms. Aimed at harnessing the unrivaled creativity of a new breed of brave, young upcoming designers and artists, the RED BOX program is a regular design developmental feature of Manila FAME . RED BOX THE ERA OF EPOCH EPOCH is a new movement in Philippine design. It is composed of rising young designers and artists with Filipino roots or affiliations who are based all over the world. Their designs, mostly furniture and accessories, have been called edgy, a result of Western upbringing, education, and training matched by their elation in discovering natural materials in the Philippines. Members of the group are Jinggoy Buensuceso, Daniel Latorre-Cruz, Martha Cech, Stanley Ruiz and Wataru Sakuma.
