Slez. Muz. Opava (A), 60: 223-233. Abstract: A pyramidal trap with combined bait is described and illustrated. The trap inserted above sapping stump of European walnut (Juglans regia) in a site in Central Bohemia near Uhlířské Janovice in 2010 yielded a rich spectrum of flies (Diptera). Records of 24 species most interesting from the faunistic, biological and nature conservancy point of view are given with comments upon their distribution and biology but a number of other captured species are also mentioned. Besides species developing in or attracted as adults to sap runs [e.g. Syrphidae: Ceriana conopsoides (Linnaeus, 1758), Aulacigastridae: three Aulacigaster spp., various Drosophilidae], other important components were formed by saproxylic [Xylomyidae: Solva marginata (Meigen, 1820), some Stratiomyidae, many Lonchaeidae, Milichiidae: Milichia ludens (Wahlberg, 1847), some Muscidae], mycophagous (some Asteiidae, Sphaeroceridae, Drosophilidae), necrophagous (some Sepsidae, Acartophtalmidae, Milichiidae, Sphaeroceridae) and saprophagous (some Sepsidae, Carnidae, Milichiidae, Sphaeroceridae) species, both latter attracted to meat-bait used in the trap. Aulacigaster falcata Papp, 1998 is the first record from Bohemia. ELMO HARDY UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION (Presidential Address, delivered, in part, December 10, 1951) R. C. L. Perkins made the first comprehensive collection of the Ha waiian flies and the dipterous portions of the "Fauna Hawaiiensis" were based largely upon material which he had collected. The "Fauna Ha waiiensis" (Grimshaw, 1901-1902; Speiser, 1902, and Perkins 1910, 1913) recorded one hundred ninety-two species from the Territory. These were arranged in twenty-seven families and apparently represented one hun dred thirty-five endemic species and fifty-seven which had been intro duced. Since that time the order was not reviewed until Bryan's excellent work^ (1934 "Proceedings"2 8:399-458). Except for the "Fauna Hawaii ensis" this is the most important contribution which has been made to the literature pertaining to the Hawaiian Diptera. It has proved an in valuable aid to the study of our flies. Bryan's check list contained three hundred twenty-nine species and one variety. At least fifteen of these were incorrectly recorded from the islands or are synonyms of other species in our fauna. Some of the others are synonyms of species not pre viously recognized from Hawaii and many of the names were based upon misidentifications. Bryan recorded forty-two families in his list. Since Bryan's list, an additional one hundred sixty-two species and one subspecies have been recorded. In addition to these, sixty-plus species have been recorded, by genus only, as new records for the Territory, but at present specific names are not available for these. -

Taxonomic limits of the family Anthomyzidae are prescribed. Two fossil genera are affirmed, viz. Protanthomyza Hennig, 1965 (Baltic amber) and Grimalantha gen. n. (type species: G. vulnerata sp. n.) described from Dominican amber. Fourteen extant genera are recognized, including Chamaebosca Speiser, 1903 (= Penquistus Kieffer, 1906 syn. n.) and Apterosepsis Richards, 1962. New diagnoses of the latter two genera and redescriptions of their type species are given and their relationships are discussed. Chamaebosca cursor (Kieffer, 1906) becomes a new combination. The monotypic genus Echidnocepha- lodes Sabrosky, 1980 is removed from Anthomyzidae, newly diagnosed and its type species E. barbatus (Lamb, 1914) redescribed and a lectotype designated. Echidnocephalodes is considered to be related to Periscelididae and/or Aulacigastridae, particularly to those genera with symmetrical male postabdomen. The inferred phylogeny of the Anthomyzidae, based on cladistic analysis, is presented. The Opomyzidae are confirmed as a sister-group of the Anthomyzidae, while Protanthomyza is found to be the most primi tive anthomyzid genus forming a sister-group to all recent genera plus the fossil Grimalantha gen. n. The monophylies of the latter group of genera, and of the Anthomyzidae as a whole, are demonstrated. The genus Protanthomyza is classified in a new subfamily Protanthomyzinae, and all remaining genera are placed in the subfamily Anthomyzinae Frey, 1921. -

(Presented at the meeting of December 1, 1938) FAMILY ASTEIIDAE Stenomicra orientalis Malloch (Plate 14) Malloch, J. R., Ann. and Mag. Nat. Hist. XX (9), pp. 24-26, pi. II, figs. 8 and 9, 1927 (male and female). This is a pale yellow, blackish and brown fly, rather slender and measuring up to about two millimeters long (fig. 1). It seems widely distributed over the lowlands to moderate elevations in the Islands wherever suitable conditions for its subaquatic larva occur. The earliest record of its capture is 1908 (O. H. Swezey), on the Islands of Hawaii and Oahu. It has been very generally taken on sugar cane, within moisture-retaining spindles or leaf bases of which the larva probably breeds. More recently, Stenomicra has been associated with other kinds of monocotyledonous plants, and data on its biology thereby secured. This active fly is remarkable for its manner of progression. We usually find it on the upper or inner surface of a long and more or less vertical leaf, as that of sugar cane (Saccharum), pineapple (Ananas), or hala (Pandanus). Here it will run forward, then, facing the same direction, run sidewise or retreat and then advance, so as somewhat to describe the letter U. This erratic behavior may be supplemented by a lifting and lowering of the abdomen, and thus, of the rather long overlapping wings, the whole procedure recalling somewhat the movements of certain tiny chalcidid wasps. -
