I SING THE BODY REPUBLIC: HOW BENJAMIN RUSH CREATED AMERICAN MEDICINE A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sarah E. Naramore __________________________________ Christopher S. Hamlin, Director Graduate Program in the History and Philosophy of Science Notre Dame, Indiana June 2018 Ó Copyright 2018 Sarah E. Naramore ii I SING THE BODY REPUBLIC: HOW BENJAMIN RUSH CREATED AMERICAN MEDICINE Abstract by Sarah E. Naramore In this dissertation I argue that Philadelphia Physician Benjamin Rush (1746-1813) merged medical and political theory in an unprecedented matter to form a concept of biological citizenship for the United States in the years following independence from Great Britain. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh's medical school, Rush began his career in 1769 as one of the few elite colonial physicians who held an MD degree. By the time he died in 1813, however, Rush publicly rejected the medicine he had learned in Scotland. He claimed to have created a new system predicated on simple physiological concepts adjusted to meet the needs of the young republic. In doing so he created an American medicine which had implications far out stripping the comparatively narrow purview of twenty-first century medical practice. Historically Rush's legacy has been fragmented into the histories of medicine, psychiatry, American political history, social history, and the history of reform movements. This informs the question this dissertation seeks to answer: Rush is a perennially-cited iii Sarah E. Naramore player in the history of medicine and that of the early United States, why? He was not the only Scottish-educated American physician nor the only member of a medical faculty; yet, his work stands out in a way which that of his contemporaries does not.

  • A History of Veganism from 1806
1 World Veganism – past, present, and future By John Davis, former IVU Manager and Historian A collection of blogs © John Davis 2010-12 Introduction This PDF e-book is about 8mb, 219 pages A4, (equivalent to 438 page paperback book), so I strongly recommend that you save a copy to your own disk, then open it in the Adobe Acrobat Reader. That way, you won’t have to download it all again if you want to read more of it sometime later. Creating this as a PDF e-book has several advantages, especially if you are reading this on a device connected to the internet. For example: - in the blog about interviews on SMTV, just click on the links to watch the videos - in the bibliography click to read a complete scan of an original very old book. - on the contents page click a link to go direct to any item, then click ‘back to top’. - you can also, of course, use other features such as search, zoom etc. etc. - a great advance on printed books… It should work on any device, though an ipad/tablet is ideal for this as there are lots of big colour photos, or on smart-phones try rotating for best results, on a larger computer monitor try view/page display/two up, to read it like a book. The blogs were posted weekly from February 2010 to December 2012 and each is self- contained, with the assumption that readers might not have seen any of the others. So feel free to start anywhere, and read them in any order, no need to read from the beginning.

  • Universalism, Dissent, and Canon in Tamil Śaivism, Ca. 1675-1994

Less attention, however, has been paid to comparable developments within the regionally situated vernacular religious traditions. The present dissertation addresses this issue by considering how several distinctly vernacular Śaiva traditions in Tamil-speaking Southern India transformed through the impact of the colonial encounter. At the center of this transformation, which produced “Tamil Śaivism” as a monolithic Tamil religion, was a shift in the way in which these sectarian traditions articulated and contested specific interpretations of Śaiva theology and sacred textuality. Chapter One contextualizes the thesis’ arguments by focusing on the internally diverse character of early-modern Tamil Śaiva intellectual culture, and more especially on the phenomenon of pan-sectarianism in two contemporary eclectic Tamil Vīraśaiva treatises. The next three chapters explore how such pan-sectarian claims were placed under enormous pressure in the nineteenth century. Chapter Two examines a low-caste commentary on a classic of Tamil Advaita Vedānta that attempts to critique the orthodox religious establishment and reinscribe Śaivism as a monism.
