Executive Biography Andy Green Executive Vice President and President, Technical Solutions Andy Green is executive vice president of Huntington Ingalls Industries and president of HII’s Technical Solutions division. Named to this position in 2016, he is responsible for HII’s services businesses, which include training systems, logistics support, information technology, fleet maintenance and modernization, unmanned undersea systems, nuclear engineering and fabrication, and oil and gas engineering. Green previously served as corporate vice president of corporate development, responsible for all of HII’s corporate development activities related to shipbuilding and marine technical services, and as vice president, component manufacturing, where he directed the manufacture of major components used in the construction of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines. He joined HII in 2011 as corporate vice president of investor relations, where he was primarily responsible for the company’s relationships and communications with Wall Street research analysts and shareholders. Prior to joining HII, Green served as vice president of investor relations at Celanese Corp. He also worked as an investment banker and research analyst at Wells Fargo, where he covered the defense and aerospace industry, and as a manufacturing plant engineer and maintenance manager at Eaton Corp.’s Truck Components Division. Green is a former U.S. Navy nuclear submarine officer. During his naval service, he successfully completed the U.S. Navy’s nuclear power program, including prototype training at the S1C reactor, and served as an officer aboard the ballistic missile submarine USS Tecumseh (SSBN 628), qualifying submarines, Poseidon C3 strategic weapons systems officer and S5W engineer. During his naval service, he also served as an instructor for junior submarine officers at the Navy’s training facility in Charleston, South Carolina. Virginia (SSN-774) class attack submarines are being named for states. Aircraft carriers are generally named for past U.S. Presidents. Of the past 14, 10 were named for past U.S. Presidents, and 2 for Members of Congress. Destroyers are being named for deceased members of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, including Secretaries of the Navy.

Section 1749 of the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) (S. 1790/P.L. 116-92 of December 20, 2019) prohibits the Secretary of Defense, in naming a new ship (or other asset) or renaming an existing ship (or other asset), from giving the asset a name that refers to, or includes a term referring to, the Confederate States of America, including any name referring to a person who served or held leadership within the Confederacy, or a Confederate battlefield victory. The provision also states that “nothing in this section may be construed as requiring a Secretary concerned to initiate a review of previously named assets.” Section 1749 of the House-reported FY2021 NDAA (H.R. 6395) would prohibit the public display of the Confederate battle flag on Department of Defense (DOD) property, including naval vessels.

The purpose of the investigation was to locate and document potential historic shipwrecks located within portions of the Mobile River, Baldwin and Mobile Counties, Alabama. SEARCH conducted an archaeological investigation of a previously unsurveyed and undredged section of the river with a high potential to contain multiple shipwrecks. One of the focal points of the investigation was to identify potential shipwrecks that might share characteristics similar to that expected from the two-masted schooner Clotilda, the last vessel to transport slaves to the United States. In addition to the survey, the study also aims to assess the results of the report findings, both as a maritime cultural landscape and as a series of resources potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
