Environmental and Social Impact Statement (ESIS) for the Proposed Palm Oil Mill (POM) with a maximum capacity of 60 MT/ hr at Daboase in the Wassa East District, Western Region : Plantations SOCFINAF Ghana (PSG) Limited EXECUTIVE SUMMARY General Overview This document presents the Environmental and Social Impact Statement (ESIS) for a proposed Palm Oil Mill (POM) with a maximum capacity of 60 metric tonnes per hour (MT/ hr) to be located on a six (6) hectares (ha) parcel of land near Daboase in the Wassa East District of the Western Region of Ghana. Plantations Socfinaf Ghana (PSG) Limited, a registered Ghanaian Company of the SOCFIN Group and a major player in sustainable commercial oil palm and rubber plantations in Ghana, will develop the Proposed Project. PSG acquired 18,000 ha of land through the divestiture of the defunct Subri Industrial Plantations in the then Mpohor Wassa East District 1 of the Western Region. PSG has established approximately 6,000 hectares (ha) of oil palm plantation since 2012, which has contributed significantly to rural wealth and employment creation in its operational area. PSG’s intention is to install a state -of-the-art processing mill to process palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) into crude palm oil (CPO) for export. The implementation of the Proposed POM will help bridge the deficit that exists in the production of CPO in Ghana 2 and generate more revenue through foreign exchange and payment of taxes to improve the Ghanaian economy. The implementation of the Proposed POM will also generate more jobs and ensure a sustainable social cohesion within the nearby communities. -

Annual Report of the Ghana Maritime Authority
1 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE GHANA MARITIME AUTHORITY 1.0 Introduction The Ghana Maritime Authority is a regulatory body established by Act 630 of 2002 and charged with the responsibility of regulating, monitoring and coordinating the activities of the maritime industry. 2.0 Mission The Mission of the Authority is to ensure the provision of safe, secure and efficient shipping services and the protection of the marine environment from ship source pollution. It is also to oversee the training, engagement and welfare of Ghanaian Seafarers. 3.0 Objectives The objective of the Authority is to create a harmonious and enabling environment within the maritime industry which will ensure the provision of safe, secure and efficient shipping operations in the country. 4.0 Functions The functions of the Authority as spelt out in the Ghana Maritime Authority Act are as follows: a. Implement the provisions of the Ghana Shipping Act, 2003, (Act 645); b. Ensure Safety of navigation; c. Fulfill flag state and port state responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner, having due regard to international maritime convention, instruments and codes; d. Deal with matters pertaining to maritime search and rescue and coordinate the activities of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ports and Harbours Authority and other body during search and rescue operations; 2 e. Regulate activities on shipping in the inland waterways including the safety of navigation in inland waterways; f. Cause to be investigated maritime casualties and take appropriate action; g. Oversee matters pertaining to the training, recruitment and welfare of Ghanaian seafarers; h. Plan, monitor and evaluate training programmes of seafarers to ensure conformity with standards laid down by international maritime conventions; i. -

The Colonial Areas include Jamestown, Usshertown and the Lighhouse, the oldest districts in Accra. The names come from the 17th century British James Fort and Ussher Fort. The Nkrumah Mausoleum houses the tomb of Kwane Nkrumah, who declared Ghana's independence from the very spot where is brone statue stands. In 1957, he became the first sub-•‐Saharan leader to gain independence. In 1966, he was ousted in a coup and fled to Guinea, never to return to Ghana alive. The Accra Market has an impressive wealth of products and foods from around the country spread out in seemingly no particular order through the winding walkways. The prices start high, and bargaining is expected. It is large enough to spend the rest of your day here, perhaps, but you'll have a chance to come back another day on your own if you like. Those who are too tired to go to the market (it is a bit of a drive) can relax at the restaurant on the beach and enjoy the view. -

Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana
Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) serve as the main or additional source of income for more than three million Ghanaians and can be broadly categorised into wood forest products, non-wood forest products and forest services. Many of these SMFEs are informal, untaxed and largely invisible within state forest planning and management. Pressure on the forest resource within Ghana is growing, due to both domestic and international demand for forest products and services. The need to improve the sustainability and livelihood contribution of SMFEs has become a policy priority, both in the search for a legal timber export trade within the Voluntary Small and Medium Partnership Agreement (VPA) linked to the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) Action Plan, and in the quest to develop a national Forest Enterprises strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). This sourcebook aims to shed new light on the multiple SMFE sub-sectors that in Ghana operate within Ghana and the challenges they face. Chapter one presents some characteristics of SMFEs in Ghana. Chapter two presents information on what goes into establishing a small business and the obligations for small businesses and Ghana Government’s initiatives on small enterprises. Chapter three presents profiles of the key SMFE subsectors in Ghana including: akpeteshie (local gin), bamboo and rattan household goods, black pepper, bushmeat, chainsaw lumber, charcoal, chewsticks, cola, community-based ecotourism, essential oils, ginger, honey, medicinal products, mortar and pestles, mushrooms, shea butter, snails, tertiary wood processing and wood carving. -

ARTICLE ORIGINAL An assessment of government policy response to HIV/AIDS in Ghana JN Fobil, IN Soyiri ABSTRACT The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has assumed a dimension raising heartbreaking anxiety among national governments and civil society groups. In Ghana for example, the pandemic is well-documented and has gone beyond a health problem, and now encompasses all socio-economic aspects of life.The estimated rate of infection from the mid-1980s to 2000 has more than doubled, and in spite of the control efforts by various groups and organisations, prevalence of the disease has not declined notably.This paper assesses government policy, programmes and strategies to combat the disease, using analysis of time trend sentinel data and weighting these against control efforts.The assessment revealed that 380 000 adults and 36 000 children are currently infected. There are wide spatial variations in prevalence across the country and the overall national prevalence has fluctuated over time, standing at 2.6% in 2000, 3.6% in 2002 and 3.1% in 2004.This appears relatively lower than in adjacent countries, where prevalence is around 5% and over 25% in East and Southern African countries. Although the review found a robust multipronged government intervention approach to containing the disease, we are hesitant to claim that the fairly stable or low national prevalence in Ghana compared with its immediate neighbours may have been the consequence of the effectiveness of national AIDS control programmes and impact of government interventions. RÉSUMÉ L’épidémie du VIH/SIDA en Afrique a pris une dimension qui augmente l’anxiété qui à son tour ronge le cœur parmi les gouvernements nationaux et les groupes de la société civile.Au Ghana, par exemple, la pandémie est bien notée et vue comme étant au-delà du problème de santé, mais actuellement elle englobe tous les aspects socio-économiques de la vie.
