Seven SCUBA divers worked on the bottom of Tobermory Harbour. The 139 people who cleaned up the surrounding streets and shorelines got almost as wet as the divers. You could describe the weather as “uncooperative”. But despite the rain, 981 pounds of garbage went to the dump the next morning, says Matt Buckley, including six tires that came out of the harbour. In addition, quite a bit of junk found its way directly into the dumpsters at the head of the harbour. The clean-up crew included Mayor McIver and Councillor Ray Burns along with children as young as three and a number of people in their seventies. Submitted by Shirley Teasdale The 10th annual Ferndale, Lion’s Head & District Golf Tournament was, again, a huge success with some 70 golfers vying for top place in the competition. During the week of June 12, six timbers were removed from each of the fenders on the Chi-Cheemaun moorage at Tobermory. The replacement timbers were supposed to arrive by June 19, but they have been delayed at the factory for design modifications. In order not to lose any time, Dean Construction’s work crew moved to South Baymouth to remove the timbers there. They will return to install the steel “timbers” at Tobermory when they arrive. But in any case, the pressure is off. Water levels have returned to Chart Datum and the ferry is back to its normal load capacity. It is expected that water levels will remain above Chart Datum until after the dock modifications are completed.

The Tobermory Chamber of Commerce helped organize the event. They found fourteen other sponsors, printed 150 T-shirts and scheduled things for June 11. In fact, the event was so successful that it donated a budget surplus of approximately $300 to the Tobermory Food Bank. The Buckleys can’t wait for next year’s event. Their target is 200 people, including two dive teams and they hope to “scrub” a much more ambitious area of roadsides and harbour bottom. The Cabot Head area was first designated by me as an Earth Science Nature Reserve in a report to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in 1976. The area was subsequently incorporated into the Niagara Escarpment Plan as a type of park within their Niagara Escarpment Parks and Open Space System (NEPOSS) along with dozens of other nature reserves I and others designated Bev’s Fruit Stand including the Lion’s Head Potholes, Wodehouse Creek Karst, and many others. The Nature Reserve Designation identifies this area as being Provincially OPEN Significant. Its collection of geological features including former environments and processes marking the Michigan Basin, Pleistocene Glaciations, and glacial Fri., Sat., Sun., & Mon. lakes within the center of North America also signifies a level of national and international significance from a geological perspective. 9am - 5pm For some time I have felt that the geological features of the Cabot Head area should receive formal international recognition. In this regard, this past March, Featuring Fresh Niagara I gave a presentation to the Niagara Escarpment Commission recommending that the NEC pursue a formal UNESCO “Geopark” designation for the area. This designation, if achieved, would bring Cabot Head into a global network of Fruits & Vegetables such sites located throughout Asia, Europe, and, more recently North America. The intent of UNESCO Geoparks is not to replicate provincial, state, or national parks but to include all regions of the world in a network of sites recognized principally for their geological significance. Although networked at at a global level, the objectives are to integrate the preservation of geological heritage with a strategy for local sustainable economic development. In other words, they are not intended to be put behind glass but to be appreciated in a controlled, structured way that safeguards the environment while stimulating local enterprises and local economic activity. 7024 Highway #6, Tobermory Another objective is to link the geological story with the cultural story; in the case of Cabot Head, this ties the human stories associated with First Nations, shipwrecks, navigation, boating, cottaging, logging, fishing, and mining with the physical domain united by an incredibly beautiful landscape. 15% off PENINSULA all in stock WATER Patio Sets & TREATMENT Seasonal •Residential •Farm •Commercial Furniture SPECIALIZING IN: • UV LIGHTS as well as Fire Pits and • WATER SOFTENERS Gel Fuel Fire Places • IRON FILTERS • METERING SYSTEMS GLEN HOFSTETTER Phone & Fax 519-534-1839 4707 HWY. # 6, MILLER LAKE 519-795-7729 R.R. #5 WIARTON OPEN: MON.-FRI. 7:30 am - 5 pm; SAT. 7:30 am - 4 pm; SUNDAY 10 am - 2 pm www.peninsulawatertreatment.com www.doidgetimbrmarts.ca page 14 # 9 June 25 to July 16, 2013 The Bruce Peninsula Press Local Special Olympics Athletes Compete At West Hill

COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT PLAN, We love our market and appreciate (Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, Section 28) the efforts of our food producers, but A PUBLIC MEETING will be held on Monday, July 22nd, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at 56 Lindsay Road 5 in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula in order to consider a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) for the downtown areas of Tobermory and Lions Head. This additional meeting is being held to ensure compliance with notice requirements under the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990. Any comments received at the June 24 public meeting are also valid.

The Community Improvement Plan establishes a framework for the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula to support and implement a series of programs over a ten (10) year period to encourage the maintenance, rehabilitation and revitalization of public and private spaces, and to provide financial incentives to achieve these objectives.

The Planning Act R.S.O. 1990 requires that Council designate Community Improvement Project Areas and Community Improvement Plans by By-law. The proposed CIP Project Areas are shown below. The Planning Act also requires that at least one Public Meeting be held before a CIP is adopted by Council, in order that the community has input into the Plan.

Any Person may attend the meeting and/or make written or verbal representation either in support or in opposition to the CIP. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula before the proposed CIP is adopted or before the By-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), and may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the OMB unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or public body as a party.

Written comments should be forwarded to the Planner, Jakob Van Dorp (by mail: Box 129, 578 Brown Street, Wiarton Photo: Hannah Rauket attending her ON N0H 2T0; by fax: 519- 534-1174; or by e-mail: [email protected]) by July 15, 2013. stand. Additional Information relating to the proposed CIP may be obtained at the Wiarton Office, 578 Brown Street, from 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday, the Municipal Offices at 56 Lindsay Road 5 (Northern Bruce Peninsula), the Tobermory or Lion’s Head Branches of the Bruce County Public Library during their respective opening hours, or on-line Yard Sale For at www.sprucethebruce.com. The Cure In Any Person who has concerns or objections to the CIP is encouraged to contact the Bruce County Planning Department at the above address prior to the scheduled meeting. Please note: Comments and opinions submitted on these matters, including the originator’s name and address, become part of the public record, may be viewed by the general public and Tobermory may be published in a Planning Report and Council Agenda.

Was A Success Notification: If you wish to be notified of the adoption of the proposed CIP and By-law, or of the refusal to adopt the CIP Submitted by Kathy Dimaline and By-law, you must make a written request to the Bruce County Planning Department at the above address. The true pay-back is knowing that you have helped bring awareness to breast cancer and have funded a cause that in turn will benefit the women and men that are living with breast cancer. The funds raised this year will go to research in hopes of putting an end to this devastating disease.
