The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound.

Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. Alfonso Fitz-Henley Jacques Department of Community and Regional Planning The University of British Columbia, Vancouver 8, Canada Date April 9, 1965 ABSTRACT Urbanization as it affects the developing countries is one of the critical problems facing Jamaica today. The ma• jor urban centre, Kingston, is unable to cope with the many and varied problems introduced by the increasing number of people who are migrating from rural areas with the hope of finding a "better life" in the big city. However, its un• healthy magnetic power persists, draining the other areas of the country of the better educated, more ambitious, wealthier, as well as the less fortunate people, leaving these areas little developed and depriving the country as a whole of some of the greater social and economic potentials.

Those were good businesses then and remained so for the next two hundred years. Chris was bom in London in 1937 to an Irish aristocrat, Middleton Joseph Blackwell. When Chris was six months old, he was brought to his mother’s family’s mansion in Jamaica to be raised. He was brought home. At age ten, Chris left Jamaica to be edu cated in England, feat he was already too free-spirited to slide into the British class system. left Harrow in 1955 and returned to Jamaica, where he worked at odd jobs while falling more and more deeply in love with music. In 1959 he started Island Records, Which at first mostly supplied Ja maican records, including early efforts by the fledgling Wailers, to Britain. Always curious and still a very young man, Blackwell also took a job as a second assistant to the director of the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, filmed in Jamaica. Offered a permanent job in the production company, Blackwell asked a fortune-teller what to do. She told him his destiny lay with music. Blackwell passed on 007. In 1964 he produced Millie Small’s “My CHRIS BLACKWELL IS w hat Boy Lollipop,” which sold six million copies around the world. Chris Blackwell was on his way. That same year, he recorded the Spencer record executives dream of Davis Group with Stevie Winwood. “Keep On Running,” “Gimme Some Lovin’ ” and being: an innovator, a barrier “I’m a Man” gave Blackwell big hits, an influx of cash and the start of a long, fruitful rela breaker and an international tionship with Winwood.

Sound System Nation: Jamaica GRAHAM ST JOHN from UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND the floor 1. Photo by author Several years ago, I started gathering interest in mobile initiatives committed to social and political causes in Australia called “sound systems”. The likes of Labrats and other vehicles for the performance of postcolonial desires had been rallying the disaffected to wild and weird frontlines, pursuing, as techno-activist mover and shaker Pete Strong (aka Mashy P) once said, “a sound system for all”. Back then, I’d become excited by these proactive and convivial mobilisations. Responding to local ecological and humanitarian issues, and fed by developments in electronic music culture, a groovement was afoot. Becoming interested in the roots of these developments, one path took me in the direction of the original spinners, the UK’s Spiral Tribe, whose anarchist antics ap- pealed to thousands of tekno-travelers and sonic squatters, attracting the law in the form of a four month and £4 million trial in 1994 that eventually saw Spiral Tribe participants acquitted of the charge of “conspiracy to cause a public nuisance”. The Spirals then kicked off the European and worldwide freetekno movement – whose chief cultural expression is the teknival.
