JAMES BOND: SIGNIFYING CHANGING IDENTITY THROUGH THE COLD WAR AND BEYOND By Christina A. Clopton Submitted to Central European University Department of International Relations and European Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Arts Supervisor: Professor Alexander Astrov CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2014 Word Count: 12,928 Abstract The Constructivist paradigm of International Relations (IR) theory has provided for an ‘aesthetic turn’ in IR. This turn can be applied to popular culture in order to theorize about the international system. Using the case study of the James Bond film series, this paper investigates the continuing relevancy of the espionage series through the Cold War and beyond in order to reveal new information about the nature of the international political system. Using the concept of the ‘empty signifier,’ this work establishes the shifting identity of James Bond in relation to four thematic icons in the films: the villains, locations, women and technology and their relation to the international political setting over the last 50 years of the films. Bond’s changing identity throughout the series reveals an increasingly globalized society that gives prominence to David Chandler’s theory about ‘empire in denial,’ in which Western states are ever more reluctant to take responsibility for their intervention abroad. LACMA presents …Is James Bond, co-organized with LMU’s School of Film and Television, June 9 – September 9, 2012 Exhibition features all twenty-two James Bond opening credit sequences, fourteen of which were created by film title designer Maurice Binder, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Bond franchise (LOS ANGELES, June 4, 2012) – The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents …Is James Bond, the first exhibition to feature the complete opening credit sequences from twenty-two James Bond films produced by Eon Productions. Co-organized by LACMA and Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television (SFTV), the exhibition celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of one of the most successful and long-lasting film franchises of all time: James Bond. SFTV Dean Stephen Ujlaki says, “Bond’s impact on popular culture is immense, from music to fashion and automobiles, and on the business side, the people who advanced the franchise deserve immense credit, among them LMU alumna Barbara Broccoli, and Eon Productions.” Over the course of fifty years and twenty-two films (soon to be twenty-three with the release of Skyfall), James Bond has gone from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, from the Soviets to the North Koreans, from M as a man to a woman, from secret nefarious organizations to power-mad tycoons. And while 007 was changing, the opening credit sequence remained constant. “Beginning with Dr. No, the opening credits, created by Maurice Binder, have functioned as pieces of art that comment on the films, while remaining separate from them,” says Elvis Mitchell, curator for Film Independent at LACMA. -

Special Fishery Conservation Areas (SFCA)
Special Fishery Conservation Areas (SFCA) Special Fishery Conservation Areas are no-fishing zones reserved for the reproduction of fish populations. Their nature reserve statuses are declared by the Agriculture Minister under Orders privileged through Section 18 of the Fishing Industry Act of 1975. It is, therefore, illegal and punishable by law to engage in any unauthorized fishing activities in the demarcated zones. Bogue Island Lagoon, Montego Bay and Bowen Inner Harbour, St Thomas, were the first two SFCA’s to be declared. Benefits of the Special Fishery Conservation Areas The special fishery conservation areas are anticipated to gradually increase fish populations affected by overfishing, habitat degradation and land-based nonpoint- source pollution, among other stressors. SFCA establishment has been scientifically proven to improve fish stocks by 3 to 21 times it original biomass. Furthermore, due to the ‘spill over’ effect, adjacent marine areas benefit as excess fish from the reserves will migrate into these areas where fishing is allowed. The SFCA's will also maintain genetic diversity of marine species within Jamaica’s water – reducing the probability of extinction. The habitats provide the marine species the opportunity to reach full sexual maturity therefore increasing their egg producing/spawning potential and survival of the species overall. SFCA's also offer socio-economic benefits, in terms of: 1. Improving economic opportunities for fishers as the catch per unit effort for fishermen should increase within the areas surrounding the reserves 2. Increased opportunities for eco-tourism, allowing visitors and citizens to view our tropical fish species in their natural environment 3. The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound. -

Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps.
