  • 'With Love, for Love, Through Love': a Literacy Confession of a Middle
‘With Love, For Love, Through Love’: A Literacy Confession of a Middle Eastern Writer NATALI BARAKAT Produced in Megan Lambert’s Fall 2018 ENC 1101 As I sit at my usual table for two in my favorite coffee shop two minutes down the street from my house, I try to pioneer my way through undiscovered territory in my brain and consider the literacy factors that have shaped me into the writer I am today. This approach is an unprecedented challenge, something that does not fall in line with what I learned in the past seventeen years. It All Has to Start Somewhere I grew up in the metropolitan city of Amman, Jordan in a house built by a Palestinian father, was raised by a Syrian mother, and blossomed with four sisters born all over the Levant; diversity was conceived in me on a lunch table level. Around our house, amidst the collection of unheard-of herbs lying around, our shameless Palestinian advocacy posters and frames, and Qur’ans of every shape, size, and color neatly exhibited on our living room shelves, one thing can stand out as misplaced: the only English phrase drowning in a sea of what looks like a manifestation of the Arabic language over time is a “Love Ain’t a Thing, Love Is a Verb” poster with a faded picture of my mum and dad hanging on the wall. They had it created in Los Angeles, California as a memento of their honeymoon in 1990 (for a $20 poster, it sure did hold up well). Out of all the clichéd, stereotypical posters they could’ve picked to have lying around the house for the next 28 years, my parents chose this, unaware of the rest of the John Mayer song behind the lyric.

  • Big Country Book of Lyrics Was Originally Offered Online As a PDF File on a Web Site That Later Grew Into the Remarkable Steeltown Site
THE BOOK of LYRICS Compiled by Michael S. Wallack v2.1 (March 5, 2007) This page intentionally left blank Introduction Project History This project is truly a labor of love. Big Country's music has played a very important part in my life over the last twenty years and this project is, in part, my way of giving something to those who share my love of Big Country. The Big Country Book of Lyrics was originally offered online as a PDF file on a web site that later grew into the remarkable Steeltown site. Unfortunately, the real world intruded and the original compiler decided to stop further updates after the release of the "Somebody Else" CD singles. At that point, I stepped in and decided to assume the responsibility for the Big Country Book of Lyrics. Alas, the real world also delayed my ability to keep up with new releases and the Book of Lyrics fell into limbo. Now, however, it is finally time to resurrect the Big Country Book of Lyrics. Dedication The Big Country Book of Lyrics is, of course, dedicated to Bruce Watson, Tony Butler, Mark Brzezicki, and to the memory of Stuart Adamson. May the music they made inspire us for generations to come. Stay alive! Driving home from work shortly after posting v2.00 of the Book of Lyrics, I realized that I had forgotten the most important dedication of all: To my wife; the first girl that I dated who liked Big Country. She has put up with my obsession all these years, and, since I began this project, has never once laughed at me or told me that I was wasting my time.

Lovell Doctor of Philosophy School of Music and Dance December 2012 Title: An Exploration of Melody, Harmony, and Improvisation in the Music of Stevie Wonder In this dissertation, I examine Stevie Wonder’s compositional style from his celebrated “classic period,” (1972-1976) focusing specifically on the concentrated two- year time span from 1972-1974 marked by his unparalleled creative output that launched him into superstardom. My study operates on the premise that most melodic relationships are governed by a fundamentally pentatonic process and that harmonic relationships are largely governed by jazz-influenced tonal processes. I have transcribed dozens of examples from the time period under review in order to survey the expressive interaction between these two related but distinct systems and the resulting effect their usage has on melody and harmony.
