The Association of North America

The Official Newsletter of the OANA Vol.8 No.1 – Jan/Feb 2000 OANA CLUB INFORMATION

The Opel Association of North America has been in existence as a local club since 1985. From 1994 to 1996 the club saw many transformations, and the O.A.N.A. settled into its current form in 1996. Our purpose now is to provide a source for locating parts, service, tech-help and various forums to exchange information between owners of all Opel models from the 1957 Olympia to any gray market imports that are in North America. We do, however, place a special emphasis on the Opel GT, Manta and Kadett models. Our ultimate goal is to keep the Opel marquee a presence in North America, improve the collectability of all in North America, and most of all, to have fun doing it. The North American Bitter Registry was formed for essentially the same reasons as The Opel Association. A very small number of Bitters (our sister make) SC coupes were imported into the U.S. With the non-existence of any club to help the owners of these rare and exotic cars, it was determined that our club would be the right place to give assistance and help these owners have a place to get connected.

Respectfully submitted, Erik Larsen - OANA Treasurer FROM THE PREZ

Well, first off I want apologize for the second extremely tardy newsletter. I slipped in my duties in getting the information and such to Alan Clift. Why should this matter, and “who is Alan Clift?” you say. Alan is the guest Editor for this and at minimum the next newsletter (it all depends on how long he wants to stay on the hook and how long I can keep him there). I want to say thanks to Alan, for giving me this chance to get caught up in all the other work I have to do. Its been hectic in my house since I have started a web design business that is taking up as much, if not more, of my time than my "real" job.

To a bit of business, those on the net and in the mailing list you are by now quite familiar with the OMC/OANA merger "discussion". But for those not familiar, let me try to sum it up as best as I can. The feeling is, for the most part, we can all provide a better service to all Opel owners everywhere with combining our efforts as clubs. There has caused a lot of discussion and nothing is truly settled at this time. If and when it happens, I will assure you that whatever happens will be the best for everyone.

As you know, we have discussed going Net Only for many reasons. The biggest is that our regular member base is getting to the point that it is costing a lot to mail a few newsletters. Also, with the OMC having a mailed newsletter as well, it really makes no sense to duplicate efforts. So guess what? As of the end of this year Vol. 8 No.12 (Nov/Dec 2000) will be the OANAs last “mailed” newsletter, whether the OMC and the OANA merge or not. All OANA regular membership renewals will still receive the newsletter till that point and get an additional year of Net-Only membership at the end. All OANA regular members that are left at the end of this year, and do not wish to convert to Net-Only, will be enrolled into the OMC. Also from this point on, when anyone contacts us to be a regular member we will inform him or her of the Net centric way we will be doing things, give them the information on OMC if they wish to continue with a mailed newsletter, the entire Vol.8 year of issues (a similar concept to the way the old NAOGTC did things) and a year of Net membership.

I would like to also encourage all OANA members that are on the net, but regular members, to renew as Net-Only members.

I hope this doesn't leave any people out in the cold, I am sure the OMC will treat you well and we will make sure that OMC has all club activity information so that you can be informed on any events in your area. We will still be on the net and publishing a PDF downloadable newsletter. Your local chapters will also still be there and of course we still plan on having another "Opels Across America" sometime in next September.

If anyone wants to comment on these actions please feel free to call me at 1-804-379-9737, email me (opelprez@opel- na.com) or meet me at the Carlilse Import Show in May.

Till next time, Charles D. Goin - OANA President

LETTER FROM THE GUEST EDITOR

Hello, my name is Alan Clift and I will be your newsletter editor for at least this issue, and probably a few more. First off I want to say I am amazed at the efforts Charles Goin has put into the OANA. I took this job of editor not because of any great interest in doing it, but because Charles has given more then his fair share and he deserves a break. With Elwood taking charge of the MOA chapter, maybe Charles can redirect his energies to something he finds more enjoyable like being the OANA Webmaster and working on his Commodore. For whatever my opinion is worth, he deserves his title of Opel Prez.

Now to describe myself some for those I haven't meet yet. I have been a member of OANA for less then 2 years and have only been to one event, last years Carlisle Import show. My willingness to help Charles and contribute something to the club is out of the appreciation for what this club provides to me as an Opel owner. I currently own three Opels, the first is a '72 1900 2dr in really good shape with 20K miles. Second, is a '71 Kadett wagon in decent shape. And finally a '71 Manta in need of a lot of attention, but a solid body. All three were added to my family within the last 3 years, but my experience with Opels goes much farther back. From the late 60's, when I was about 12, until sometime in middle 80's, at least one, if not several Opels were always in use by my family. Between my father and I, we have owned a total of nineteen Opels, thirteen for him, six (including my current ones) for me. After having being around so many Opels for such a long time, a home just seems more natural to me with an Opel parked outside. I even store my Manta at my parent's house just to spruce their place up a bit, much to my mother’s dismay. SOUTHERN CHAPTER – KEN LITKE PRESIDENT

With the recent snow and ice storms here in South Carolina most of us here and in Georgia have left our cars under the covers. Today after 5 weeks of sleep my '74 Manta Rallye fired right up. My 17 mile commute to work was uneventful until I crossed into Augusta, Georgia and saw that salt was still on the road. I say all this to remind our Opel owners to wash the under side of their cars before the salt kills them.

Update on my '73 GT, it is still in Atlanta and the mechanic has the largest list of excuses I have ever seen. The entire Opel world will know when it is back in my possession.

Spring is coming and we hope to double our attendance at our local gathering in 2000.

CENTRAL OK OPEL CLUB

The OK club has been a bit quiet over the winter months. The only "event" was a short road trip that Tim Davis and I took in his 72 GT. One reason for the trip was Tim’s recent installation of a Getrag 5 speed. He wanted some road experience with it to see how it does (great!), and to give me an idea of the benefit of a 5 speed over the 4 (significant). He did all the modifications himself, and I helped him install it, which was pretty easy. All in all, if you have the $$, it is a great investment.

We drove to Plano, Texas and shared some information and Opel stories with Otto Bartsch. The road trip was fun, but only the one car was involved until we got to Texas, at which point there were 5 (Otto has 4). Otto, Tim and I looked at the cars, explored the EFI issue as I am putting EFI on my 72 GT, and Tim shared some of his mechanical expertise with Otto. The main issue of interest for Otto was a rev limiter that Tim showed him that came out of a Porsche. It limits revs to 6200 rpm and is a simple rotor cap design. The other point of interest was some steel brake lines that Tim was able to get fabricated at a shop in OKC. I got a set for my car and they are of high quality and, I think, reasonably priced. We discussed the possibility of getting together with the other Opel folks in Texas and having joint Texas/Oklahoma road trip. We would look for a spring date as it is too hot here for a summer date.

NEW ENGLAND OPEL CLUB

PLANS FOR 2000

A meeting is being planned for Late Feb., early March, in Worcester, MA since It is central to the region. Approximately 10-12 members are interested, details to follow.

May 19-21 – Import/Kit Car Show and swap meet at Carlisle Fairgrounds, Carlisle, PA. There will be a show field for Opels and a parts co-op site among the 400+ vendors selling foreign car parts.

June 25 - The 4th annual Opels-on-the-Lawn event at the Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA. This is part of the German Car Day sponsored by the museum. This is our feature event in the region and we hope to see everyone there.

August 11-13 – OMC Picnic in CA. Walter Foxtree is thinking of a cross country Opel caravan. I am in the 60% range for attending.

Other events that are tentative so far are a day at the Yankee Candle Auto Museum in Deerfield, MA, a RI meet in July, NH meet at NHIS in Loudon, NH and a meet in CT. Any volunteers to help organize these?

Happy Opeling, Gary Farias TECH TIP - GAS TANK SENSOR

About five years ago when I finally got an Opel GT, the gas tank sensor did not work. I found one locally and it was even worse, totally rusted. In both cases the resistance wire was broken so I figured they must all be broken. I measured what I had and calculated the ohms per foot of the wire.

To make a long story short, I finally got some wire that seems to work quite well. Unfortunately it is a very specialized wire with limited applications so you can't get it at Radio Shack. It is sold in bulk, by the pound. Like about a hundred bucks a pound! That one pound is about 36,000 feet long and I needed just under two feet to repair my sensor.

The original idea was to rebuild enough GT sensors to recoup my investment or sell say ten feet for a dollar (making it a gigantic rip off as it is about three and a half feet per cent, but on the other hand how much was I going to sell). I've recouped my investment and I am getting out of the business as if I ever was in business in the first place. I must apologize to the owners of the last three I did as they must have waited six months to get them back. I don't remember Gil saying they belonged to customers, I thought they were extras to go into stock. Then my Dad passed away and with all the cleanup going on, I just plain forgot about them.

If your Opel GT gas tank sensor (sender) is inoperative, DO NOT THROW IT AWAY! They are usually, but not always, repairable. The main problem they have is that after at least 25 years they loose the ground connection. The ground spring (that's what I'm calling it) corrodes to a layer of black copper oxide. At least that is what it appears to be. This oxide does not conduct, so the sensor is not grounding the gauge through the resistance wire. Hence, the gauge always reads empty. In a properly operating gas tank sensor, with the float at the bottom of the tube (tank empty), the sensor will measure about 100 ohms. With the float at the top of the tube (tank full) it should measure about 5 ohms. On the 12 or 15 I did for Gil over the past couple of years, I would drill out the rivet holding the thing together, clean everything up and reassemble using a 6-32 screw, soldering a new resistance wire in place.

This is really unnecessary. If your gas tank sensor is inoperative and reasonably rust free and the resistance wire is still intact, try this: Solder a piece of small gauge bare wire to the ground spring. Next, drill a small hole in the sensor base, where all this stuff is mounted. Screw a small sheet metal screw into the hole and ground the wire you soldered to the ground spring using a star washer. Put some epoxy on the outside of the hole to prevent gas fumes from coming inside.

If the wire is broken, you have a problem. The wire I use was 40 gauge nichrome 80. It's about as thick as a human hair and rather stiff, with a resistance of 70 ohms per foot. I saved quite a bit before selling it to Gil but he has much more, about three miles of it.

While I'm not really interested in going into business rebuilding Opel GT gas tank sensors, since I've recouped my investment in the wire, maybe if enough people were interested I may change my mind.

TECH TIP – S-10 CLUTCH

Question: from Rick O. I've got a '69 GT with the 1.9L. It's got dual 40DCOE webers, high lift cam, solid lifters, oversized valves, 40 over high compression pistons, balanced, ported head. When I put all the above together I also put in a new stock clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. Well, unfortunately ever since then whenever I pushed in the clutch the throwout bearing howled. Needless to say I was not happy. Well, I've finally gotten around to pulling the and bellhousing.

Now, after my question (figured you all needed some background info) while I have the car this far apart should I consider a larger clutch (like something from Opel GT source)? It'd set me back about $700. I suspect I'll have a good running motor but really I'm not going to race it and for the most part, I'm a pretty conservative driver. Should I spend the money?

Answer: from Otto If you have it that far apart there is two options. If you're not racing, you may be able to stay with the stock arrangement, whose life will depend on the aggressiveness of your right foot. I would recommend replacing the pressure plate with a German Sachs unit, but I don't know who sells these in the states any more. I'm still running one in my '73 FI GT (135HP) and bought it and an extra, years ago from Mantapart in Ohio, but they are now defunct. The bigger Opel clutch is a good piece, but way overpriced for what you get. The alternative to this (once suggested to me by Gill at Opel GTS) is to have your "stock flywheel machined flat (step removed), redrilled (6 mounting bolts) for a '93 Chevy S-10 2.8 V-6 pressure plate and use this pressure plate and disc (same splines as Opel transmission). Good machine shop will face, drill and balance the flywheel/clutch assembly for about $150-175, buy the mentioned S-10 clutch and disc beforehand (about $75) for bolt pattern and balance, and use the standard Opel throwout bearing (Borg-Warner N1451 from Pep Boys, about $25). The beauty of this whole arrangement is that the replacement parts are much more readily available, the pressure plate has a much stiffer spring and the clutch area is increased by about 35 - 40% and you've lightened the rotating assembly so that the engine revs somewhat more quickly. This is an even better setup than Opel's big clutch and much less expensive.

Another Answer: from Bob Legere The power that goes to the ground is only as good as the clutch, so I wouldn't skimp here. You have a few options here though. You could go the stock 8" diameter route and just have the pressure plate resprung with a stiffer diaphragm, with a more aggressive disc lining. The cost is very reasonable (200-250), and will take every bit of the engine you described. The small diameter clutch also has less inertia than a larger one, and will help the engine to rev quicker. Another option is to use a Euro 8.5" or 9.0" clutch. The pedal pressure will decrease, but the inertia is greater so the engine won't rev as nicely. The cost, as you may have heard, is pretty high and the availability may not be there. Another option I've used on many projects is the installation of a Chevy S-10 clutch from a 2.8 V-6. It's 9.125" in diameter, off the shelf, and very strong. After all, it was designed for a 3400lb. truck with more torque than a Opel and a payload capacity over 1/2 ton. The flywheel must be machined flat and redrilled for the six-bolts of the new pressure plate. The new clutch adjustment should be 4.75", not 4.25" and the pedal pressure will be much lighter. With a 4-speed or ZF 5-speed tranny, it's a bolt-in, but if you use a Getrag 5-speed, the inside of the bellhousing must be ground in one spot to clear the pressure plate. There are many different types of clutches for the S-10, you want the 9.125" from 1982-1985 for the 2.8 litre. Cost will vary with clutch brand and who machines your flywheel, but figure 275-400 total.

More Information: from Randy Brooks I recently performed this clutch modification. I used a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch and pressure plate. The cost was about $220 bucks from my local auto parts store. The size I used is the 8 1/2 inch clutch disk with 1-14 spline pattern, I believe. The most difficult thing is getting the flywheel machined. Fortunately, I have a machine shop, so the cost was low for me. The flywheel must be ground flat. Stop grinding as soon as the groove in the center is gone, that is sufficient. Next, since the S-10 pressure plate has 6 holes and is larger than the Opel, 6 new mounting holes must be drilled and tapped in the flywheel. I used 5/16-18 socket head cap screws for mine since they are virtually indestructible. Since I have done this modification my car really performs well, I recommend it for everyone!

OPEL TREK 2000

While still in the planning stage, there has been talk of non West Coast Opelers making a “snowball” caravan to this years OMC picnic. Starting on the East coast, the caravan would head west, picking up Opels and their owners as it goes. Nothing specific on route and time schedule, as of yet. But for anyone interested, please contact your chapter president for more detail.

THE GRAND REWRITE

Members of the online Opel community (http://www.egroups.com/group/classicopels/info.html) have started a project to create an online, updated version of the Opel Factory Service Manuals. Using the 1973 Manual to begin with, all the pages are going to be scanned into text files and separate picture files and then made into Web pages. For each topic, we are then going to add additional, updated information as gathered over the years by us loyal Opel fans. There will be some new pictures, corrections, and better explanations, as well as alternative parts listings and other clever ideas.

Once the basic manual is in there, the next step will be to get the parts catalog scanned in and then cross-referenced. Unfortunately, the illustrated parts books were organized for parts clerks at GM dealerships and NOT for Opel collectors, but we hope to change all that.

If you have access to a computer, but haven't signed up for ClassicOpels yet, please go to the address above and sign up as soon as you can! You'll have a source for all kinds of great information and tech tips... and soon you'll be able to use our updated and improved manuals, too.

Lotus Speedster for Pontiac?

With the possible demise of the Camaro and Firebird in the air, GM is looking outside America for another for its product lineup. The world’s largest automaker has announced that it will sell a Vauxhall version of the Opel Speedster concept developed with Lotus Engineering; rumor has it that a Pontiac or Saturn badged version may come to the States as well.

The VX220 is a mid-engined sportster, with a stiff aluminum chassis and lightweight aerodynamic composite body. Its new 16-valve 2.2-liter ECOTEC engine is similar to the new Saturn engine and accelerates the VX220 from 0 to 62 mph in less than six seconds. Fuel consumption in the European combined cycle is estimated at 40 mpg.

The VX220 Speedster will be produced in a limited edition of a few thousand units per year and will be in showrooms before the end of next year. Look for it to be priced in the high $20,000 range if it comes to the United States.

AN OPEL TO BE PROUD OF

The owner of this award winning Opel is 10 year old Sean Fawkes of Paducah, KY. He built this pinewood model as a Cub Scott project, patterning if after his dad's GT. The car swept the local awards, winning first in all categories (den, pack and best looking), then placed second in district competition. Not many GT owners can claim to match Sean's feat of building a GT from scratch, or could do such an outstanding job. Great looking set of wheels Sean!
