ENERGETICS OF THE LEATHERBACK TURTLE, DERMOCHELYS CORIACEA by Timothy Todd Jones B.Sc., Florida Atlantic University, 2000 M.Sc., Florida Atlantic University, 2004 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Zoology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2009 © Timothy Todd Jones, 2009 ABSTRACT I have quantified the energy requirements of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) throughout development, and examined growth rates, resource requirement and availability, and anthropogenic threats from the commercial fishery. I demonstrated that the use of the doubly labeled water (DLW) method to determine field metabolic rate in marine turtles is constrained by low metabolic (MR) and high water turnover rates (Chapter 2). For fed and fasted turtles, water turnover rates were 9.57±1.33% and 6.14±0.65% TBW day-1 and MR (from respirometry) was 28.66±5.31 kJ kg-1 day-1 and 13.77±1.49 kJ kg-1 day-1, respectively. This led to isotope turnover (kd:ko) ratios of 0.91±0.02 for fed turtles and 1.08±0.16 for fasted turtles, producing negative MRs for fasted turtles. While I showed that for fed turtles the DLW method was consistent with respirometry the use of DLW in fasting turtles differed from respirometry by 440%. The fact that DLW does not work in certain situations is a rare finding that will be of broad interest in the field of energetics. Having determined that the DLW method is constrained in marine turtles I then turned to rearing leatherbacks in the laboratory to measure growth (Chapter 3) and determine energy intake (Chapter 4). -

Reinterpretation of the Spanish Late Jurassic “Hispaniachelys prebetica” as an indeterminate plesiochelyid turtle ADÁN PÉREZ-GARCÍA Pérez-García, A. 2014. Reinterpretation of the Spanish Late Jurassic “Hispaniachelys prebetica” as an indeterminate plesiochelyid turtle. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (4): 879–885. A partial postcranial skeleton (carapace, plastron, and other poorly preserved elements) of a turtle, from the late Ox- fordian of the Betic Range of Spain, has recently been assigned to a new taxon, Hispaniachelys prebetica. This is one of the few European turtle taxa reported from pre-Kimmeridgian levels, and the oldest turtle so far known from southern Europe. The character combination identified in that taxon (including the presence of cleithra, and single cervical scale) did not allow its assignment to Plesiochelyidae, a group of turtles very abundant and diverse in the Late Jurassic of Eu- rope. The revision of the single specimen assigned to this taxon led to the reinterpretation of some of its elements, being reassigned to Plesiochelyidae. This study confirms the presence of Plesiochelyidae in the Oxfordian. However, because the Spanish taxon does not present a unique combination of characters, it is proposed as a nomen dubium. Dinosaur Tracks 2011
The Early Cretaceous (late Berriasian) Bückeberg Formation in the southern Lower Saxony Basin, to Annette Richter, Mike Reich (Eds.) the west and to the south of Hannover, yields abundant and diverse dinosaur tracks, known since the late 1870s. After a few decades of pioneering and discovery, this area was scientifi cally neglected for a long time concerning dinosaur tracks and tracksites, and only single sporadic fi nds were reported in the second half of the 20th century. During 2007 and 2008, a new tracksite was discovered in Dinosaur Tracks 2011 Obernkirchen, yielding an astonishing amount of new and well-preserved dinosaur tracks, cared for by the Hannover State Museum and its cooperational partners. The present volume contains the An International Symposium, abstracts of lectures and posters presented during the Dinosaur Track Symposium 2011 as well as Obernkirchen, April 14-17, 2011 excursion and collection guides. On behalf of the Schaumburger Landschaft, this symposium was held at the medieval Stift Obernkirchen, Germany, from April 14th to 17th, 2011. THE FAUNA OF THE ARUNDEL FORMATION OF MARYLAND. By Charles W. Gilmore. Associate Curator, Division of Paleontology , United States National Museum. INTRODUCTION. The vertebrate fauna of the Arundel formation of Maryland has long been a subject of interest to all workers in American Mcsozoic formations. The correlation of this fauna with the Morrison (Atlan- tosaurus, Como) beds fauna of the Rocky Mountain region by Prof. O. C. Marsh, and the later 1 and more positive confirmation of that conclusion by Dr. R. S. Lull, has been quite generally accepted as the correct interpretation. The present communication gives the results of a more recent study of all known specimens from the Arun- del formation, and the conclusions reached are quite at variance to those of my predecessors. The evidence appears to show—first, that the vertebrate fauna as a whole is not to be closely correlated with that of the Morrison formation of the West; second, that it contains forms having undoubted Upper Cretaceous affinities; third, that it consists of a combination of dinosaurian forms hitherto unknown in any fauna of this continent—that is, the intermingling of Sauropo- dous dinosaurs with those having Upper Cretaceous affinities. While the discussion of several phases of this question are neces- sarily inconclusive, due to the paucity of the materials, yet the main contentions, I believe, can be fully maintained. SOURCE OF MATERIALS. Practically all of the vertebrate materials known from the Arundel formation of Maryland are now assembled in the United States National Museum. These comprise all of the specimens collected by the late J. -
