Soc. 104(3-4):226-230, 1996 MYRMECOPHILY IN KEROPLATIDAE (DIPTERA: SCIAROIDEA) The Keroplatidae, a family of the Sciaroidea (fungus gnats), are a cosmopolitan group, and, although they are encountered frequently, very little has been published on their biology. Matile (1990) revised the Arachnocampinae, Macrocerinae and Keroplatini, and included information, where known, on immature stages. Keroplatid larvae spin silk webs and are either predaceous or fungal spore feeders. The most complete account of the natural history of any predaceous member of this family can be obtained from the numerous papers on the New Zealand Glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa (Skuse), a fungus gnat with luminous larvae (see Pugsley, 1983, 1984, for a review of the literature and ecology of the species, and Matile, 1990, for morphology and a summary of biology). -

Among 19 Japanese gall midge species on Artemisia, 3 species that were knownonly from galls and larvae have been left unnamed. The morphological study proved that the 2 of them belonged to the genus Rhopalomyia of the tribe Rhopalomyiini. The larvae of both species are characterized by the reduction of terminal papillae from eight to six, the absence of sternal spatula, and reduction in the numberof lateral papillae. They were likely to be new species, but were not described because their adult specimens were not available. Unfortunately, remaining 1 species could not be studied due to the lack of specimens. As a result, the number of Japanese Rhopalomyia species on Artemisia totaled up to 14. This number is remarkably large for the species associated with a single plant genus. Submission of Manuscripts: Works published or under consideration elsewhere (including on the internet) will not be accepted. At first submission, one double spaced hard copy (text and tables) with figures (may not be original) must be sent to the Editors, Dr. Hüseyin Özdikmen for publication in MEZ. All manuscripts should be submitted as Word file or PDF file in an e-mail attachment. If electronic submission is not possible due to limitations of electronic space at the sending or receiving ends, unavailability of e-mail, etc., we will accept “hard” versions, in triplicate, accompanied by an electronic version stored in a floppy disk, a CD-ROM. Review Process: When submitting manuscripts, all authors provides the name, of at least three qualified experts (they also provide their address, subject fields and e-mails). Specialist and Generalist Cecidomyiid Predators on Aphids, Mites, Scale Insects and Other Invertebrates

Specialist and generalist cecidomyiid predators on aphids, mites, scale insects and other invertebrates ABSTRACT Published information on predaceous Cecidomyiidae is briefly reviewed and check-lists of the known species of specialist predators on aphids, mites and scale insects are provided. Two species are now used as commercially marketed biocontrol agents, namely Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) against aphids and Feltiella acarisuga (Vallot) against tetranychid mites. Larvae of most known species of specialist predators (currently assigned to Coccodiplosis De Meijere, Dentifibula Felt, Diadiplosis Felt, Dicrodiplosis Kieffer, Megommata Barnes and Triommata Barnes) feed on Coccoidea (mealybugs and scale insects). Many species in the large and cosmopolitan genus Lestodiplosis Kieffer have been recorded as specialist predators on various invertebrate hosts, including mites, cecidomyiid larvae and lepidopterous caterpillars, but recent observations in the UK indicate that at least some of these ‘species’ may represent opportunistic general predators feeding on a range of different hosts. Past and present studies of the Cecidomyiidae have been hampered by inadequate taxonomic treatment and there is an obvious need for new biosystematic studies to provide a better information base for further research and application. INTRODUCTION About 5300 species of Cecidomyiidae have been formally named and described but the cecidomyiid fauna of most parts of the world is still poorly known. There must therefore be many undescribed and unstudied species awaiting discovery and much to be learned about their biology.
