Esteemed collaborators include Sly & Robbie, Mad Professor, Dr. Das of Asian Dub Foundation, Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubaten) and more. Without a doubt one of the planet’s great musical adventures. Formed by Ertel and Levent Akman in 1996, Baba Zula took Turkish psychedelic pioneers of the 1960s like Moğollar as their inspiration and foundation for what they called Istanbul psychedelia, the fathers of a scene that’s since grown up around them. Baba Zula came into existence when Ertel’s previous outfit, ZeN, was asked to create a soundtrack by a director friend. Ertel and two other members were interested, and the band grew from that seed, with music for films very much a part of their output. Listen here. Out Now: El Leopardo: El Leopardo / El Acontista GBEP 41 / 4030433604175 / label: Glitterbeat / format: 12” / Colombia – Popular Glitterbeat doesn’t release many 12” singles (this is the second), but this 2-song beauty is so good they couldn’t pass up the chance to put it out. El Leopardo morph urban dub textures together with sparse Colombian percussion, spoken incantations and deep, hypnotic bass. Masterminded by Dani Boom (Systema Solar) & Felipe Alvarez (from Bogota cult label Polen Records). Listen to a track. Iva Bittova & Cikori: At Home PM 100 / 8588006152128 / label: Indies Scope / format: CD / Czech Republic – Avantgarde Iva Bittová & Čikori have recorded a new album “At Home”. Nine original songs follow up marvellously the legendary album “Bíle Inferno” (i.e. White Inferno) both with the band members and the album’s poetics but also with its song form and the overall sound of the recordings. “At Home” includes three songs with English lyrics, which are essential for the album. The song ‘At Home’ was written by Linda Gregg, ‘A Paper Cone’ by renowned London critic, radio editor, occasional lyricist and poet, Ken Hunt. The mastering was done by the well respected Dave Cook (e.g. Laurie Anderson, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Alanis Morissette, Radiohead) at the studio AREA 52 in New York. “Nature and home are great inspiration for me and this atmosphere surely got on the whole album,” says Iva Bittová. Listen to a track. Kadialy Kouyate: Na Kitabo KKSACD 3 / 0793052119461 / label: KK Sound Archive / format: CD / Senegal – Popular Kadialy Kouyate is a musician, a singer songwriter inspired by the West African Griot repertoire. Born into the great line of Kouyate Griot in Southern Senegal, Kadialy’s mesmerising kora playing and singing style have been appreciated in many prestigious venues as both a soloist and in different ensembles. 'Na Kitabo' ('My Book') is about humanity, cultural values, moral stories and personal life experiences. Hatred seems to be dominating the world and negativity is constantly dominating our views. These depressing realities somehow affect us all in different ways. Therefore it became essential for Kadialy to focus the direction of this album on little crucial things that are important to our happiness and uplifting us. Watch the album teaser. Compagnie Dounia: Alif DOUNIA 1 / 3760061189355 / label: Compagnie Dounia / format: CD / Various – Popular ‘Alif’ is a rare project, a collective project that creates a music of today with influences of yesterday. At the crossroads of the music of India, Maghreb and West Africa, ‘Alif’ creates a musical parenthesis, a moment out of time and borders. Sometimes it is the energy of a Gnawa song that "trances" the melody. Sometimes it was the Indian voice that founded the existence of a melody which itself gave rise to a rhythmic line, then a chorus with three voices. Listen to track featuring Vincent Segal. Pascoal Silva: Komprumisu VGM 516 / 5606562620516 / label: VGM / format: CD / Cabo Verde – Reggae Komprumisu is the new Cape Verdian reggae kriolu album by Pascoal Silva. His reggae fusion of traditional music from Cape Verde sung in Portuguese Creole is warm and contagious. Xango Music Distribution Release #2 – 2017 Pagina | 1 Le Bour – Bodros: Chadenn PPR 20 / 3359340161016 / label: Paker Prod / format: CD / France-Brittany – Folk On this new album, the two companions chose to leave aside the dance of fest-noz to tackle a more intimate music. Le Bour, saxophoneplayer and Bodros, diatonic accordion player, (alongside Rozenn Talec on vocals and Gaetan Sansom on percussion), are deeply rooted in their country. Their compositions invite us this time to move away from their usual steps and dances, letting us improvise another step of dance. This is a journey into the imagination of the duet. Listen to their music. Les Yeux Noirs: A Band of Gypsies + Suites BUDA 860302 / 3341348603025 / label: Buda Musique / format: 2CD / France – Gypsy Les Yeux Noirs was founded by two brothers, Eric and Olivier Slabiak, who both play violin. Their music style combines traditional melodies from their many inspirations (klezmer, Romani music, and gipsy jazz) as well as more modern jazz styles. Their albums contain everything from a Yiddish lullaby to a rousing, dance- inspiring fusion of klezmer violin with modern sampling and Arabic drums. Their name is taken from a 19th Century tune generally described (inaccurately) as a Russian Gypsy song, made popular by Django Reinhardt among many others. Listen to one of the tracks. Dresch Quartet: Tordelos FA 3812 / 5998048538126 / label: Fono / format: CD / Hungary – Jazz A new opus adding to Dresch’s life work – alongside Mihaly Dresch (sax, fuhun, vocals) musicians Miklós Lukács (dulcimer), Balázs Horváth (double bass) and István Baló (drums). "Music and life with Mihály Dresch always creates an organic unity of intensity. For him it is natural that the sounds coming from within cling to his native land and wider environment. All his life he has strived to demonstrate that a person can love the purest of jazz and original folk music at the same time." - Béla Szilárd Jávorszky. Listen to a track. Monda: Monda MONDA 2016 / 5600384982678 / label: UAU / format: CD / Portugal – Popular The Monda project is created by Jorge Roque, Pedro Zagalo and Herlander Medinas. With a clear approach to the new musical trends, without barriers or demarcated frontiers and close to the younger generations, the Monda project created a contemporary approach to Cante Alentejano, mixing the traditional composition with the new world music sounds. Featuring the fadista Katia Guerreiro, Rui Veloso, Tiago Oliveira and the Group of Singers of Portel, among others. Listen to a track. Luisa Amaro & Miguel Carvalhinho: Cancao Para Carlos Paredes AM 1 / 9789896050108 / label: Arte Magica / format: CD / Portugal – Popular Luísa Amaro is the first woman who recorded an album playing the Portuguese guitar - Song for Carlos Paredes - an instrument until then only played by men. Playing with Miguel Carvalhinho, Luisa Amaro continues her work in search of new ways for the Portuguese guitar. This album is a true recital by the hands of Luísa Amaro and Miguel Carvalhinho. The Portuguese guitar and the classic guitar are now in dialogue: little stories about Carlos Paredes and his songs. Listen here. EXPECTED Expected 17 February 2017: Bargou08: Targ GBCD 45 / 4030433604526 / label: Glitterbeat / format: CD / Tunesia – Popular Bargou08: Targ GBLP 45 / 4030433604519 / label: Glitterbeat / format: LP / Tunesia – Popular Bargou 08 deftly combines the little-known soundscapes and rhythms of the Tunisian highlands with driving electronic and rock textures. A deep, pulsing Moog synthesizer intertwines with explosive drums, traditional string/reed instruments and the haunting power of ancient songs. The trance of the past emerges from out of the speakers, but the sound is wired, contemporary and thrilling. While Targ is the band’s debut album, there is already a growing buzz from their appearances at major festivals (Roskilde) and their acclaimed showcase at WOMEX 2016. Bargou 08 will undoubtedly be one of the year’s most talked about global fusions. Listen to a track. Expected 10 February 2017: Huongh Thanh: Saigon BUDA 5722684 / 0602557226843 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Vietnam – Jazz In this collaboration with Franck Tortiller, Hương Thanh reclaims the world of jazz. Here she is back in Saigon, the metropolis of her birth, revisiting the repertoire of a time bubbling with a new creativity constructed around the western style. Hương Thanh and Franck Tortiller bring a new and contemporary dimension to these songs of yesteryear, evoking steamy landscapes as described by Marguerite Duras in "The Lover" and costumes imagined by Wong Kar-Wai for "In the Mood for Love." Their dual vision transcends this atmosphere, erasing the outdated grandiloquence of the old, to restore only the imperishable poetry to the nostalgic wave of the soul. Listen to a track here.
