Formed by Ertel and Levent Akman in 1996, Baba Zula took Turkish psychedelic pioneers of the 1960s like Moğollar as their inspiration and foundation for what they called Istanbul psychedelia, the fathers of a scene that’s since grown up around them. Baba Zula came into existence when Ertel’s previous outfit, ZeN, was asked to create a soundtrack by a director friend. Ertel and two other members were interested, and the band grew from that seed, with music for films very much a part of their output. Listen here. Iva Bittova & Cikori: At Home PM 100 / 8588006152128 / label: Indies Scope / format: CD / Czech Republic – Avantgarde Iva Bittová & Čikori have recorded a new album “At Home”. Nine original songs follow up marvellously the legendary album “Bíle Inferno” (i.e. White Inferno) both with the band members and the album’s poetics but also with its song form and the overall sound of the recordings. “At Home” includes three songs with English lyrics, which are essential for the album. The song ‘At Home’ was written by Linda Gregg, ‘A Paper Cone’ by renowned London critic, radio editor, occasional lyricist and poet, Ken Hunt. The mastering was done by the well respected Dave Cook (e.g. Laurie Anderson, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Alanis Morissette, Radiohead) at the studio AREA 52 in New York. “Nature and home are great inspiration for me and this atmosphere surely got on the whole album,” says Iva Bittová. 'Na Kitabo' ('My Book') is about humanity, cultural values, moral stories and personal life experiences. Hatred seems to be dominating the world and negativity is constantly dominating our views. At the crossroads of the music of India, Maghreb and West Africa, ‘Alif’ creates a musical parenthesis, a moment out of time and borders. Sometimes it is the energy of a Gnawa song that "trances" the melody. Its extensive circulation as a trope that indicates externality to modernity is inextricably linked to the specific configurations of the project of Turkish modernization. In this dissertation, I draw from the insights of postcolonial theory and psychoanalysis to develop a novel conceptualization of taşra, through which I interpret Turkey’s complicated relationship to modernity and its status within the new global order. I argue that a close analysis of the dominant discourses on taşra is revealing, for it constitutes one primary site where the predicaments and contradictions of Turkish modernization and national identity-constitution are played out, where collective anxieties around these issues continue to be projected and managed. In my analysis of these discourses, I adopt a deconstructive rather than a corrective approach: my objective is not to reveal what taşra “really” is but what work it is made to do. The contemporary cinematic and literary texts that I engage with in this study are the Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk’s memoir Istanbul: Memories and the City (2005), Turkish-German director Fatih Akın’s documentary Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul (2005) and three films by the pioneer of the new genre of taşra films in Turkey, Nuri Bilge Ceylan—namely Climates (2006), Three Monkeys (2008) and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011).
